Have to say that was a stacked lineup. Perry is simply incredible, final pick. Had to cut his hair, hilarious.
@berryscott359029 күн бұрын
Despite getting a hat trick in one of the exhibition games during the junior selection camp, Perry was on the bubble, and only made the team because one of the returnees, slated to share the top line with Bergeron and Crosby got hurt. Pretty sure that player's name was Jeremy Coliton. (One of our Dmen, Cam Barker also got mono and was forced to sit out). You certainly don't wanna see any player get hurt. Still, with 20/20 hindsight, Perry was a MUCH BETTER option for Canada's top line. Not to toot my own horn, but I thought so from Day One...
@DudleyDoright-ru2ch29 күн бұрын
@@berryscott3590 Selection camps particularly at that high a level of athlete often have more to do with who you know. In Perry's case hindsight is pretty clear on who deserved to be there. He is still an effective player when most have retired. Don't know how he does with his style of play?

Swedens team 1993: Forsberg, Sundström and Näslund as the 1 line with 69 point to that line in the tournament. And Forsberg still has the record with 31 points in 7 games.

and next year olympic gold...
@JimBurlakoff24 күн бұрын
Great team but it is not even remotely close. The statistics for that line were very much bolstered by Sweden's 20-1 win over Japan - Forsberg had 10 points in that game. Sweden also did not win gold that year, it was actually Canada. And Canada also defeated Sweden in the only game they played together that tournament. When you consider these 3 points - the 2005 team Canada was way more dominant.
@Svartsmarabon24 күн бұрын
@ buhu I’m a North American who can’t accept that anyone from Europe can be better than us in hockey. We are gods…..
@gudius8 күн бұрын
Saying forsberg bolstered his stats by a win vs japan is such a copout, because none of the other players at the top of the record books "bolstered" their stats vs lesser nations in group play right?
@JimBurlakoff8 күн бұрын
@@gudius Well the tournament was far different in 1993 than it was in 2005, and is far different today than it was in 2005. The disparity in talent between the top teams and lowest teams shrinks as time moves on. So in comparison to the other nations that competed in 1993 - Sweden was by far the best, it's not even close (even considering the fact that they didn't take gold). However, it is tough to compare Sweden 1993 with teams in later years. Norway finished last in this past tournament - a team world's away from Japan 1993. So to answer your question - no, most teams after 2000 didn't have the possibility of bolstering their stats vs lesser nations - at least not to the extent that teams had prior to 2000. In 1992 in pool B (which Japan had to win to get to the 1993 tourney) North Korea was playing - that should tell you something.

The separate thread to this story that I'm super fascinated by was this team coming out of the lockout, which paved the way for the next generation of Stanley Cup champions and superstars. A true passing of the torch moment in a very loose sense. Crosby and the Penguins, Jeff Carter & Mike Richards with the Kings, Toews, Ladd, and Seabrook with the Blackhawks, Perry and Getzlaf with the Ducks, and Bergeron with the Bruins. Those are just the ones who become champions, not even mentioning Weber, Dion, etc., who become multiple-time stars. Yes, it would be no shocker to pick out the Olympics Canada team and do this exact look, but this amount of success coming out of the WORLD JUNIORS is insane. This tournament being the only thing to watch during the lockout was exceptional, while unknowingly seeing players that would take the entire NHL by the neck for the next 10 years is crazy to look back on.

If I recall correctly our 2009 WJC Team in Ottawa went fifty percent, 21 of 42 on the pp...that's with Ellis walking the blue, JT and Eberle upfront... They had another guy, Buffalo Sabres draft pick I think, whose career was cut short by back woes... Can't recall his name just now... PK Subban was also on that team, as was a 17 yr old Evander Kane, plus a kid name Esposito whose career was cut short by knee injuries... I don't think our 2005 Dream Team came close to that pp percentage... But they didn't need to... All 4 lines could score and they blew teams out!

@Mike-l7y5y29 күн бұрын
I remember this like yesterday. You young people who were born in the early 2000's don't remember. 2004 was the lockout year, literally, no NHL, no major league hockey of any kind in North America and now you get a Team Canada that had a fourth line that's pretty much slam dunk Hall of Fame. The other nations also had really strong teams starting with Russia who had Alex Ovechkin but Canada was too strong. They not winning in 7 years was a national embarrassment. That's like the Toronto Blue Jays winning 7 straight World Series in baseball as the only Canadian based major league baseball team. They were hungry and destroyed every opposing nation. The key was Patrice Bergeron. He had major experience with the Boston Bruins and was allowed to play. Weber is in the Hall of Fame (2024) and at least another 9 or 10 guys will be as well. I don't think there's any argument. As for the best team, well again, you have to compare eras and other players from dominant NHL teams. Hard to say, but at least top 5 for sure.
