You can also remove the two screws holding the green board in place, flip it over, and de-solder the old thermistor from the back to pull it out entirely. Then solder a new one in cleanly. If you check the backside of the board, you'll likely find the old connection is burnt up too and in my non-professional opinion, is better to remove it all and start fresh.

EXACTLY...Until the manufacturers caught on to us and now they bury the whole thing in rubber epoxy so we cant pull the board out..

Same here on the Genteq Eon ECM modules, fully potted black silicone. I'm practicing on my failed module, but I think its possible to carefully cut a 1 inch hole in the aluminum housing right over where the inrush current limiter is soldered and solder new leads right onto the board that way. You could also run the lead wires through a small hole you drill in the side of the housing and keep the current limiter inside the housing.

My Genteq 1/2 hp model 5SME39HX1344 died and it costs $800+ to have it replaced. I asked to keep the motor because I figured it may be repairable. I saw this and think it's worth a shot. The end plate is filled with black rubber giving no access to the other side. There is only 2 capacitors and the Varistor SL22 1R020 sits out by itself giving easy access. I intend break the varistor and solder the new part to the exposed parts. Found the part at Digi-Key for $1.94 plus shipping. Fingers crossed.
@gmcbride6306 Жыл бұрын
Well, I got to the Varister and it OHMs out good, so no $5 dollar here. I'll look into converting my air handler from ECM to PSC.
@davidmotley420710 ай бұрын
If the varistor pulls 20 amp, I would be little concern with soldering. How long will it pull 20 amp, will the leads get hot enough to melt?

I have a carrier with motor assy: hd52ae121. 1hp - 115v. ECM. Its in a 8000vs unit. Oh and where to buy these thermistors. I found on amazon… will see if I can get locally. Thx for vid. @cybernatwa3 жыл бұрын
See the pre-stage choke being a filter and rectifier for the self-sacrificing SL32 NTC. So why did the SL32 become destroyed requiring changing? Guess those capacitors retains peak DC voltage ... that would Hertz? You did mention the motor size which seems significant with respect to the capacitors? Is that PCB a switch-mode system for the motor?

I did this repair a couple years ago. A year later I thought I had a bad bearing in my carrier infinity inducer motor, but have determined the the main blower motor is making a intermittent high pitched whine (g#5 note) when on first stage. I "think" it's related to the module, but not sure. Anyone?

Actually the component is not a thermistor. Thermistors change their resistance based on temperature & are often used as temperature sensors. The component that blew up on your ECM motor is called Varistor, it changes its resistance based on voltage, it acts as a voltage surge protector. Good job repairing your motor👍. You may also extend its terminals using pieces of wire to make it easy for soldering.
@EETechs2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the component he replaced IS A THERMISTOR. He did not change out a MOV. He even called out the part number, which with a simple google search for SL32 brings up the part that is called a thermistor made by Ametherm. 🙄🙄 The thermistor is used for current limiting when power is first applied because capacitors draw in a lot of current when first charged that can cause fuses to blow or damage to other components. Yes, there are also MOV's on this board too, but the usual part to go bad is the current limiting thermistor on these ECM motors.
@harrybuckman1965 Жыл бұрын
Dude you have no idea what your talking about. Its a ceramic thermistor
@natew.551111 ай бұрын
No, EE Tech is correct. It's an Antherm made inrush current limiter, 20 to 30 amp, depending on motor hp. Negative temperature coeficient, 1 ohm resistance at rated temp.

In my case I found the 3 blue dime sized components you can see were rusted and one or more of the legs had broken off. Can anyone tell me what those items are?
@NoSuffix2 жыл бұрын
A quick google search shows that those should be Y capacitor for EMI suppression.
@mavamQ2 жыл бұрын
This is great the manufacturers leave one part exposed, I hope that's the one that goes bad. There are many motors that go bad and it's not the thermistor causing the problem. But you can't get to the other circuitry to replace them because they potted the circuit, they are also very inexpensive parts.
