Minimalism is not just about decluttering stuff. Much harder but also oftentimes much more impactful is decluttering beliefs, habits, and goals, to focus your time and energy on the things that are actually important to you.

What is a habit or belief that you want to declutter or have decluttered recently?

I want to declutter the habit of shopping for clothes too much. I also want to share that I was able to declutter a sentimental watch that I stopped wearing because I bought a new one and no longer liked how small it was. Even though it was sentimental to me, I traded it at a pawn shop for a beautiful 14k gold pendant that I had my eye on. I have no regrets trading. I wear the pendant most days. I traded something I no longer used for something I use.

Buying makeup. I have so much makeup that I bought, only to find out that it really didn't suit me. Total waste of money. So, I'm wearing much less makeup and accepting my natural beauty and uniqueness.

I was seriously ill earlier this year and ended up needing major surgery. After the surgery, I was so weak that I could hardly move at all. Now, six months later, I am doing so much better. If I compare myself with other people or with myself when I was decades younger, I can feel discouraged. When I compare myself now with how I was six months ago, I am beyond impressed with my fortitude and resilience. I am amazed with how far I've come. I also find that staying present is an antidote to the bad habits of comparison and unreasonable expectations. When fully present, I find my life to be rich and satisfying, exactly as it is in this moment.

Wonderful, Lia. On expectations: sadness is the distance between my expectations and my reality. Being willing to accept each part life as it comes, as an unexpected gift allows me to enjoy it, rather than longing for some vision I had of that moment.

I'm getting ready to move internationally and I've realised just how much *stuff* I've accumulated that I don't really need! Of course there are things that make my life easier that I have to get rid of and buy again once I move, but more often than not I'm finding things that are not actually that important for me to keep.

Not always trying to be prepared for everything. That's a tough one for me. I hope I can learn to do it. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is such a really good video. I have in the past compared myself to others due to toxic people around me, I am so glad they are no longer in my life. If we keep comparing ourselves to others then it only leads to unhappiness.

Hi Lia, I really enjoyed this vlog and find it very helpful for my minimalism journey. I often think to myself that you are so wise for a young person.n I also admire the way that you live your values. Being prepared is something I have always valued and perhaps has become part of my identity as people sometimes expect it of me, especially my adult children. We have just returned from 2 weeks in Singapore and Bali with our 2 daughters, son-in-law and baby granddaughter. My husband and I travelled with under 7kg and spent money on food, self-catering accommodation and transport. When someone needed nail clippers they came to me to find them (Despite keeping my nails short, I hate the feeling of a chipped nail). Regarding comparison, I'm not even sure we should compare ourselves to our younger selves, especially in later life. Yesterday I saw a guy who had been seriously mauled by a shark. He said that he did not like to compare his life post accident with his previous life because it made him sad. Rather, he was striving to live in the moment and to enjoy life the way it was, sitting in his garden and meditating etc. Having had a serious accident myself a couple of years ago, I know how hard it is not look back and compare.

I always appreciate your videos and fresh perspective. Minimalism isn't just about the amount of stuff we have, but getting rid of the beliefs and habits that keep us from living the meaningful life we want. Those are just as much a reflection of capitalism as the physical stuff and can keep us stuck even after the clutter is gone. Many thanks for your work.

Ich fühl mich stellenweise "ertappt", aber das schafft gerade so viel neues Bewusstsein; und "Einsicht" ist ja bekanntlich der beste Weg zur "Besserung". Woah, danke dafür!

Thank you, as usual very good video. I think the main reason to be happy is not to be 100 % perfect. You can't be a perfect Minimalist or perfect Mother,...Do your best, and wait for the outcome.Felix from Zürich-Switzerland

in some situations its good to have expectations, as you said with a vacation- you worked hard and likely spend a lot of time to be able to afford the vacation, so you want the place to visit to feel 'worth it' .. of course you can always make a good experience even if it wasn't how you imagined, but you just to feel content with the amount of time/money you invested.

I would say its natural to be competitive or make comparisons, we are social beings, we don't want to be left behind our peers. I think you would become lost if you didn't keep some degree of competitiveness
