I've gotten a lot of messages here lately that basically sum up to " I know, but I can't". If you find yourself saying things like- “I want to get rid of the clutter but I can’t.” then this video is a MUST.
I want to break down exactly why you can’t seem to get rid of clutter and share some tangible things you can do (the things that I've found work really well for myself) in order to move forward with ease and confidence even if you’ve failed in the past. Here’s a hint, if you’re saying “I know, but I can’t”, this is a key sign that your block is a limiting belief. Let’s talk about it.

I'm so glad you mentioned the connection between clutter and toxic relationships. I'm currently in the most abusive relationship of my life, more depressed than ever and it seems impossible to get my things in order. Our house reflects the chaos in our relationship. I learned I need to be dedicated to ignoring him not let him burst my bubble of peace so to speak, so that I can finally straighten out my life no matter what he is doing, saying or acting like. Easier said than done but "baby steps" is still progress. Thank you for this video!

Please folks who struggle with this. Be gentle with yourself. It is a challenge for even the most accomplished minimalist at times. My take is it is not something you can fully achieve in an hour, day, weekend, week, month year or even in some cases a decade. Its a thing that will take time. Its a habit. I have learned from a behaviour therapist that repetitive action every day for a month creates a habit. So even if you just get into the rhythm of removing one item out of your home every day no matter how small the item and getting it to where it needs to go you will soon find you have made great strides without even noticing and the result will be just a way of life. Try this approach and I'm sure you will have pretty much desensitised yourself from the apparent pain of possession loss and realise that you have broken the cycle of the sunk cost fallacy. Sometimes you may feel it has returned but it will fade again and be easier over time as it slowly looses its grip. Don't give up hope You will learn so much about your soul and spirit if you pursue the course to a clutter free life.

I recently moved to another apartment and I have that "I can't" feeling, too. I see all the stuff and i think to myself "Where should I start? I'm overwhelmed by the amount of stuff" and then I don't have any motivation and nothing happens. I need someone to do it with. I can't do it alone. Maybe it will be easier, once it's all gone.

I have said for YEARS I need someone to do it with unfortunately there is not that someone and finally I slowly but surely got most of it done. My house isn’t perfect yet but that’s ok, it’s very simplified now and I can walk around freely, dust and vacuum much quicker and I don’t feel a weight hanging over me all the time. I hope you can find someone to help but if not I suggest setting a timer for a few minutes and tackling it a little at a time. 💜💜

I agree with Diana, if things are still in boxes, go ONE BOX AT A TIME. OR- One area, drawer, cabinet at a time. Set a timer and even if you’re only go for 5-15 mins. That’s MORE than you would’ve done without taking that one little step. Step by Step, you’ll see improvement. I started this journey this past year, and it’s taking longer than I would’ve liked- BUT my home looks and feels SO MUCH BETTER now! I also listen to these videos WHILE I’m decluttering- IT MOTIVATES ME and makes me feel NOT SO ALONE 😉🥰

For me as I go through boxes of things, since it is hard for me, if I just get two boxes down to one box, by discarding a few items from each feels like a win for me. Baby steps baby steps sometimes is the best way.

One additional point…..as people age clutter can be a sign, sometimes a very early one, of age related mental changes. Topic for another video. Sometimes an individual cannot do it themselves no matter what they try. Some people do need someone to walk alongside them in the process.

My mom passed away and I just stored her stuff at my house for about a year until I decided to get a storage unit. I took out that stuff and all my random stuff I had been holding onto through the years. After a few months, I was really able to tackle the hard stuff and find out I didnt need any of it, gave it away or tossed. Takes time but removing the clutter first helped me a lot.

I'm currently on this episode and you are talking about toxic relationships. I'm in tears, because you mentioned many things that pertained to my toxic relationship, my first relationship after my divorce, and only my second serious one. Even though I'm older, it sucked me in just as my ex sucked me in. The only good thing about my ex is my 3 wonderful, now adult children. I'm no longer in the relationship. I had spent so much time trying to make it work and finally cut it off in June. He was out for himself and was just using me as an emotional crutch, I'm an emotional person. Whom also has ADHD, anxiety, depression and some manic bipolar tendencies, on rare occasions. He was using everything to his advantage, but to the determent of my mental and physical health. I said ENOUGH!!!! It is very liberating to know, I'm not the only one! Thank You!!!

Two things I really appreciate about this video are firstly, that it is a new perspective. There are many videos about decluttering and minimalism that are the same tips over and over again that don't really help someone like me who has already been a minimalist for many years but is nonetheless stuck in a decluttering rut. Secondly, you addressed those mothers who feel like they can't keep an area clean, but there are other mothers who do, and I think that is a very controversial but important truth. There are many women who will say that you are just mom shaming when you tell them that it is possible to be better and cleaner and what have you. So thank you for being honest

I feel for you because I got moved into one 398 sq ft dump with mountains of moving boxes! Slowly I realize I'm not Lady Bountiful with a dressing table to display all the pretty bottles and stuff! I'm not going to fancy places. I do expect to move to housing with one bedroom, my dresser and bookshelves and table -- oh glory! Meanwhile, I have one of those rolling plastic drawer units in the bathroom which contains all the little things we need -- makeup in one drawer, dental things in another, neti pot and larger items in a big drawer, favorite jewelry in one small drawer. Really, one of the larger drawers could hold bras and panties -- convenient after a shower. And my beaded earrings in one of those hanging things. A white wire rack over the toilet holds towels and TP. Under bed bins are useful for shoes. . . . Footlockers, trunks and larger suitcases can be stacked for wonderful storage -- and a flat surface for really special items. Because I do have a storage unit, I've put off-season clothes and bedding in large white bags with ties to fasten. I write on the bag with permanent marker. Things like this can also go in the trunk of the car -- or the backseat!

We recently had covid in our home and thankfully we are now all ok, but now I see projects in every room (this room needs painting, this door is broken, on and on). How can I move forward with minimizing and not take on too much? We are just starting to find a bare minimum “normal” routine again.

Thanks for the video! In step 5 you mention "words", weirdly, the best decluttering I did recently was when I kinda scolded myself about hanging on to stuff. mindfulness totally helps me to become aware of this process, from who where come the ideas.. to take distance, and of course, i have to train my self to remind me that as the old pattern beliefs are coming testing me, and by doing concrete steps even small did help me to remind me i can over the idea. and gain confidence step by step, so identification of the roots of the idea, to notice after what who my mood goes back in doubt help me a lot.. ;) until understanding in me what is the reason then. and blaming etc is not useful in fact, no anger. just understanding it helps me in the process to retrain my brain now :) thank you for what you share, it is empowering supportive, 😘✨

This is so helpful! I also am lucky to be alive! Put another way, I believe in angels! I paid big bucks to an old lady dating service. She didn't check out her matches! I went out with a VA psychiatrist!! He didn't take me to dinner! He wanted to barbecue the cheapest cuts of meat and he poured lots of brandy or something syrupy! I finally asked him to take me home. His big gas guzzler boat of a car was all over the Bay Bridge as he ranted at me. He was drunk. I was saying prayers silently. At my apartment door, he didn't wait to see I got into the building lobby. Well, to make this shorter, I wore the same pretty outfit to work the next day. I did not go straight home at 5. I knew he was gunning for me. I got off the cable car mid-evening, and here came his big old car! He turned the corner in front of the ice cream shop and I was right there, but invisible to him. Saying "I don't think so" to a total jerk can be so terribly wise. Just think, younger friends, it could be the perfect evening to go thru that box of papers!

Disposable razors (safety razor has lasted me over 7 years), lotions (simply use coconut oil or jojoba oil), nail files (I have a crystal glass one I have been using for over 10 years). I do however buy peroxide because I use it to get stains out of fabric and clothes, to clean and disinfect my hygiene tools like my razor, nail file, and nail clippers (since simple soap doesn’t quite do the trick, especially getting mold or any nasty smells out). I don’t buy exfoliators for the face/body (except occasionally buying an eco-friendly coffee scrub that help fade scars) most microfiber clothes do well enough to remove dead skin cells.

I agree. My husband is the same with all his gaming stuff, films, books, memorabilia and figures etc. he won’t get rid of anything as they’re all ‘worth a lot’. I’m just starting with my own things first and telling him I’m getting ready for when we move out of my in laws house as we can’t take all this stuff and make our new house messy, and it’s not fair on his parents to keep all these things as they’re making the home really messy and cluttered. I’m hoping he’ll start seeing the difference when my things are decluttered and maybe start selling his ‘worthy’ stuff or letting go of them to benefit others.

Emotional freedom technique eft tapping is also very helpful for limiting beliefs, procrastination and everything physical, emotional or mental. My apartment is fairly clutter free. My craft supply is ready to get an other go through... I thought.... I went in full steam ahead and came to a screetching halt. I only tidied my fabrics and was so disappointed honestly I was close to tears (and pms is not helping😂). So I moved on from fabrics to craft stuff there was a little victory😄. I'm gonna go back but left it for today. I know I can do it but it's not quite ready I have some processing to do. Why? The fabrics are very pretty so soft and some brand new, I like them. I would love to do all does projects is think it would be a great source of to be creative and present. But when I do does project I'm usually kind of stressed and pushing them through. And all those project and ideas kind of stress me out. And I have a lot of ideas and even my scraps you could use for hair bands. Do I want to do this? No. As you can see I'm still processing😂😂😂. My conclusion so far: My fantasy and reality are a bit diverse. I like your approach it resonates with me. Thank you very much for sharing💗💗💗

If at the end of the day they bring you joy and you are using them, keep them. If you learn that you won't be using the pieces of fabric and are ready to let go, perhaps there are art programs, student programs, or after school programs in your area that may benefit and feel joy should you choose to declutter them 🤗 I released a video on overcoming these limiting beliefs on my channel this week if you want to dive in deeper into the subject!

@@MiaDanielle 💗💗💗💗 Wow! Thank you very much for your answer!!💗💗I needed three attempts 1. I just look 2. I sorted 3. watched how I felt with all those projects or possibilities what I could do with the fabrics. You could do a lot of pretty things but I don't see myself doing it and it stresses me out. So I kept the fabrics for one skirt I may sew and 4. asked my sister. Luckily she takes everything!😅😅😅 With the hard stuff I still go the friends route. Easy stuff I put for free on fb, donate or in a box at the curb (when the weather is nice). So fabrics ✔. I think that video that you mentioned I watched before this one😉. Thank you for the recommendation. 💗💗💗

I'm sorry to hear that, Peggy. Decluttering can definitely be emotional. I have a free workshop “The Formula For Creating a Holistic, Clutter-Free Haven”, which teaches you how to let go with ease. I hope it helps! : miadanielle.com/masterclass

I want to declutter but I can’t because my husband sees no problems with the clutter, is too sentimental about trash and lives to shop the clearance section at Walmart. He “gifts” me all these things that I don’t need or want and I can’t get him to understand me. I also have multiple friends whose believe “gift-giving is their love language.” I rarely enjoy any of their gifts. How can I get these people to stop? If they want to live that way, that’s fine but I don’t.

Paperwork is hardest for me. Taxes are a given to keep. What documentation to keep from Military amd medical sjnce I am on disability. I got rid off 95% of greeting cards only keeping meaningful ones. Now going through letters totally emotional for me. ugh

My friend kept about 30 years worth of tax returns and never needed them. She's on disability and hasn't needed to file taxes for over 7 years. I told her it's way past time to get that paper clutter junk out of her life. Oh, and the mice have had a field day in her filing cabinets and boxes. My husband is retired now, we don't file taxes anymore, we burned everything except for the copy of the last time we filed. Who needs that albatross hanging around their necks? Paper clutter is the worst!

Remember it is mind over matter. I too struggle to let some things go. I dont know what it is about us humans that get emotionaly attached to things. I have learned, that if I am not able to let something go at the time of decluttering, i am able to 6 months later. Because I need to understand something in my mind 1st. I know that I am in constant conversation with my fantasy self who will come up with all kinds of reasons to keep it. Then there is the past self who will play the violin about how long i have had it and it has memories. Ya. But there is my true self, who sees it logically and know that my alternative if I really need the item I am not using and taking up space can easily get that for less than 5 dollars. If I even will need it. Its a tug of war. But, my true self always wins, just not all the time till my other selfves can agree with my logic.

I was doing so well before 2020. In 2020, I was diagnosed with cancer, shortly thereafter we were sent home to isolate due to COVID, & my relationship broke down. Being so weak, exhausted from treatment & being alone, along with rescuing 3 cats (1 who was terrified of everything & 1 who is extremely ill), has taken it’s toll. I still suffer from health issues. I returned to work in March & my bird was diagnosed with a tumor a year ago. My animals are my life because COVID tore my life apart. I know I can do this, but I am overwhelmed & just don’t know where to start. I hate living this way & don’t think it’s healthy for my animals either.

Thank you for sharing your heart 💕 It sounds like you've definitely been on a rocky journey the last few years. Give yourself a little bit of grace and think about one small meaningful step that you can take today that would make a difference. What would that be? Small steps over time can lead to big results, you don't HAVE to tackle everything in one day. I do have a few FREE resources on my website that might help you get started in the right direction. First, start with some of these brain trainings 💪 You get 3 free audios. One to help train your brain to let stuff go, one to train your brain to get stuff done, and one to train your brain to declutter. miadanielle.com/train-your-brain You can also review the 4-Step Checklist To Declutter Your Stuff miadanielle.com/checklist And, Declutter Your First Room Cheatsheet miadanielle.com/cheatsheet Let me know if any of these help you move beyond your current stage and help clear things up for you. 🤗

I've decluttered my entire home and the last and only thing I am having trouble letting go of is my books. I don't plan to ever open to them so I dony know why books are something I can't completely let go.

Way to go 🙌 Let's first take a second to acknowledge that. Decluttering your entire HOME is no easy feat, you should give yourself a pat on the back for that 🤗 Have you been able to sit with it and see what feelings pop up when you think about decluttering them? Why the need is so strong? Sometimes, sitting with these seemingly insignificant questions can open you up to the root reason!

What about if you can’t concentrate on one room. Each room has an issue . Yes I move from room to room to find permanent homes. Too many things to do. The brain thinks of everything all at once. I spend all day and sometimes not accomplishing enough. Do I think about too much? Finding not feel guilty as I make a milestone to get rid of clutter. Prioritizing is difficult. Many things need immediate attention. Is there a format to jump start my brain. It’s a back and forth and exhausting.

I like to brain dump every single thing that needs to get done as a list to ease my mind and free up brain space. As soon as I think of something more, I write it down to immediately get it out of my head. Go over that list throughout the day and pick one thing to do that you feel up for at that moment. Be as detailed as possible too, to break down tasks into manageable chunks like sort laundry, wash laundry, fold laundry, put laundry away all as separate items. It helps me find at least one thing to do per day and gives you a sense of accomplishment that helps to push you to complete just one more task and then maybe another. I literally wrote down Put tote bags away. I had two to put in a drawer that were sitting out for a long time. Super simple and quick to complete and helped motivate me to choose more to do on my list. GL!

As it relates to decluttering, I find always keeping a donatable box on the ready is the best way to go. As I come across something that I want to declutter & donate, I just throw it in the box. Also start small. Start with a draw, a shelf, a box, etc. Good luck in your decluttering journey.
