ECOLINE BRUSH PENS: Demo, Review & Mixed Media Portrait with Karen Campbell

I've never used ecoline brush pens for a full project before, so today's the day! I was really interested to see how they compare to my beloved Tombows and Winsor Newton watercolor markers because I LOVE doing brush pen drawings and paintings in my signature mixed media style. Ecoline doesn't do a great job of marketing them as refillable, because their watercolor inks that you can refill them with sell really well on their own.

Agreed! I know all about those, I just didn’t realize they were meant to pop into the markers! They really need to do a better job!! That’s a huge missed point they aren’t telling people about. Sheesh! Thanks again for letting me know!!!

Hi Karen. Just purchased your latest book. Love it! Just one suggestion for the future: it would be helpful if the book format was workbook style. Rather than needing a seperate paper one could complete a lesson in the actual book. Templates would have been fab. Still, an excellent book.

I like the slower best, as I can really watch and do not miss much.. but, I really enjoy all your videos fast or slow, I learn something from each one.. So, I am grateful either way!… (your time, your dime, and I just show up!😂) I do buy as many of your books, as I can… (I save up and splurge, because They are very easy to understand and I go back and back and redo projects, to see if I have progressed toward “ better” at all🥴!) …I am seeing results so… YAY!👍 …Right now am saving for your fab club, so I’m really looking forward to that. Plus, I am “older than dirt”🤣, so…if I can learn a new creative skill, ANYONE can, (just do not give up, and use it as a time to enjoy yourself and have fun, which is,what I always say when learning new things.) …. Also I am loving, trying out my water color pencils, ( got them used and cheap at a yard sale!😳🤓… …they are really rich and quite strong, (when I dip the point of the pencil in water before use, for high or low light)…what is your opinion of water color pencils?… do you use them and how,?(if you do)…. Love, love , love this slower paced real time video! I really joy watching your process and listening to you what you have to say during the process. If I need to I can always watch it at a faster speed, but if it’s already a time lapse it’s not as good to watch it slower. Also, if its a long video that I can’t watch all at once, I enjoy having something to return to. KZbin is swamped with time lapse videos set to (usually) annoying music. This type of slower paced real time video is so much more interesting and personal 💛🤗

I just found you and can't stop watching. Everytime the video ends im like... okay I got to go swap the laundry... but then the thumbnail for another video comes up and im like... ummm ill just watch one more! Something about your personally reminds me of Lorelai Gilmore from an old tv show Gilmore girls. Watching your videos feel like hanging out with your girlfriends. Thanks for the smiles . I like this video format because I like to watch the process. Speaking aloud your thoughts, seeing how you correct what you consider a mistake, all in real time helps all of us learn. Love Ecoline markers for my journals, concepts or color combos for projects. Love being able to refill and tweak the colors with reinkers or the Ecoline bottle inks. They need quite a bit of water to move but when you find the sweet spot they can be magical. TFS, you always bring inspiration.

I love all your videos, and this one was especially helpful in the comparisons and the detailed process. You can always make me believe I can try something without fear (okay, still with trepidation most of the time, but "believing" is the key battlepoint for me). Have you tried the pentel art brush pens? I bought the black and grey and love them but am not sure about investing in the colors because they are a little more expensive.

I have! I have to say though I am utterly and completely OBSESSED with Pentel Brush pen (and Pocket version) in just plain black. I use it for EVERY drawing and mixed media project that I make almost!! I don’t find the other colors as rich and amazing as the black so I just keep to the black and use the Winsor Newton watercolor brush pens when I want to make a true and lasting watercolor marker piece! Ecoline is refillable with their inktpot s and the ink in Both products are the same.

I never tried the Windsor and Newton watercolors … I only have the alcohol ones (they were previously called Promarkers from Leterset which sold the company to Windsor and Newton) and they are by far my favorite alcohol markers because they they don’t have a brush, it’s a hard nib and the precision it’s greater for me than copics. As for ecolines They have brilliant colors but I don’t manage them very well, so I’ll try again!! 😂

Personally I love real time. I think it must be how my brain connects as fast videos do my head in and more so when I slow them down because of the sound. As someone said, real time can be speeded up if needed. Great video.

So...is there a difference between the WN and The Albrecht Durer? The AB (which is what I have) are also lightfast (full line only 60) just wondering if I need to invest in WN (at least not yet)

Oh great question! I wasn’t aware that Albrecht Durer had a brand of Watercolor Markers! You can head to Amazon or Google and learn more that way. They’ll have all the lightfast and brush info that you’ll need to make the comparison I’m sure!
