North Africa (NA) has a very complex history. It is arguable that NA was the first "New World" as about 10,000+ years ago, it was mostly underwater. As the water receded, and fertile lands became accessible, the first peoples to arrive were the Nubian. Over time, they developed a very advanced and sophisticated society. Over more time, other tribes such as Egyptians advanced and either conquered or assimilated Nubia. Then even other tribes such as the Greek, Roman, Ottoman, etc. conquered or assimilated predecessor nations such as Egypt. Nubians, like EVERY HUMAN THAT HAS EVER WALKED ON THE PLANET, trace their genetic ancestry back to Sub Saharan Africa. Thus, ALL humans are materially linked to the geography of Southern Africa. Since we are ALL genetically rooted from the exact same area of the planet, and science has proven there is no such thing as "race", what we have left is *human* cultural and ethnic tribal identity. Skin color and outward physical features are only meaningful as humans have used these differences as components of tribalism, and we term these particular differences "race" as to make it easier to conquered or assimilate. I submit that "race" or skin color is trumped by ethnicity and even nationality. I have found *some* North Africans to be put off by my relatively dark skin...until the moment I open my mouth and speak North American English. At that moment everything changes. I seem to no longer be considered what they thought was a Black African, but an American. So even the facade of "race" by skin color is dynamic. If these few people I encounter truly hate based on skin color alone, their attitudes would not change - regardless of if they assumed I somehow had money - once they realize I am only indirectly from Sub Saharan Africa by ancestry. Tribal identity is very real and very important to all humans. Tribe is the upper level that supports human survival, as it's more effective to survive as a group than on ones own. Therefore we are all attached to tribe as it is part of our identity. Yet, in a absolute sense, we are all from the same singular place. The more technology allows us all to travel, communicate, and interact with others outside of our immediate tribes, the more positive interaction and trading relationships we will have.

Beautiful story Dr, I lived in Morocco, Egypt and Sudan for many years the countries are very beautiful the people are nice. they are a great business opportunities in all of these northern African countries. These people are Africans they are Berbers and others but most Arabized, not Arabs. Many Black African countries like Mali, Sudan and Senigale have people that speak Arabic that does not make them Arabs. Some people are slow to understand that these people are Africans and not all africans are dark skinned. Example the Igbo tribe In Nigeria are not mixed with Arabs or whites, but many are fair skinned. Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to show your culture and your history. I look forward to meeting you in Africa, I’ll be doing business there shortly.

Wow, thank you for this Dr. Harnet!! As an Ethiopian/Eritrean I am always interested in learning about other African’s fascination with our homeland in conversation. I did some study to find that during the 12th-14th centuries East Africans migrated to present day Guinea Bissau and lived amongst the locals there until the start of the colonial era. At that time they fearlessly resisted being sold into slavery or colonized. In result the Europeans deemed them Balanta meaning “Those that Resist” and left them to themselves as they disbanded into Senegal and Northern Africa. I have always maintained that the African continent won't realize its own strength until all its inhabitants from north to south and from east to west sees themselves as one. If the northern part of Africa can come around and embrace its African nature then we become unstoppable as a continent.

There's a distinct difference between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. I met a Somali man who didn't want to be called a black African. What about the attitude of those who inhabit North Africa? Even though they are in the continent, they don't identify themselves with Sub-saharan black Africans.
