What Sachs never mentions is the real cause of the US Cold War with Russia, he keeps saying the US wanted dominance but never says why, It's clear the US is doing the same thing with China, The US knows it can't go to war with those countries the reason is clear no one wins and everyone will die, The only reason Sachs never mentioned is the Dollar Reserve statute it's a leverage they don't want to lose the only countries who can say this is a scam and needs to end are China and Russia,

The only two times the world was truly multipolar was in 1914 and 1939. We all know how that went. The goal shouldn't be multipolarism, ie. more imperialists who "share" in the exploitation and domination of the working people, but the dismantling of the Capitalist system.

To change for the better one must acknowledge one's weaknesses. After World War II US have been creating enemies. Much of US resources are used to support regime change in other countries and invading countries. US made money selling weapons to countries around the World. Hence the war related industry grew at the expense of other industries. So much attention and finances were diverted to war mongering effort outside that local needs and developments are being neglected. Whereas in China the opposite happen. In the last 40 years their profits were put to good use to develop the infrastructure of the country. They focus more in developing self sufficiency. Hence they improved trade between countries and were able to support the various important industries and their achievements in a few decades surpassing all expectations. Meanwhile in the US inflation is shrinking the once middle class to poor. People cannot afford to buy US products. They welcome Chinese products which are cheaper.

Simple. In geopolitical power-struggles between alliances, border states have two choices: 1)Joining a side, and having a reasonable expectation that any future conflict will be confined to the borders of their territory and that of the adversary. 2) Remaining neutral and having absolute certainty that a future conflict will be fought across the entirety of their territory. This certainty would have been pointed out clearly to the newly independent countries of Central / Eastern Europe by the original NATO countries when their membership of NATO was being solicited. It's what we call a 'Hobson's choice'- i.e.a choice made under duress. Finland and Sweden, being border states, are in exactly the same position.

Where is the empathy for the innocent people of Ukraine? You erase them by making this about "The West" when that is only a wider background element to those people on the ground defending their home from invaders. Where is the world's care for the children stolen, kidnapped into Russia? The sovereignty of Ukraine violated, for the second time? Concessions only embolded the bullies, and Russia remains a cruel and repressive place to live. Now Ukraine may become their slave. The West's problem was not responding harshly and right away. Now in their weakness, innocents suffer while fools online make it a football game of "West versus East".

While I have great respect for Sachs work, I am somewhat disappointed in his analysis of this situation. Having visited Ukraine number of times, the Ukrainians have no love for Russian control and voted decisively in a democratic referendum to leave the Russian union. The 1994 Budapest Memorandum was signed by Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Under it, Ukraine agreed to give up the nuclear weapons in return for security guarantees. Russia violated this agreement when it supported separatist movements in Ukraine's Donbas region and subsequently invaded Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022. The UK and the US are protecting international law by living up to the 1994 agreement. NATO expansion was and continues to be the result of decisions by sovereign nations to seek security against the threat of future Russian aggression from which they suffered following WW2. Does anyone in the West really think that NATO is an aggressive pact and will invade Russia. Ukraine is not blameless with regard to its treatment of its Russian-speaking minorities and it would have been better served by a federal government that provided linguistic and cultural protection to its Russian-speaking regions. However, in this conflict it is not a US puppet state nor the aggressor.

Read paragraph 5 of the Budapest Memorandum after the word "except" The country had no right to act in concert with one guarantor against another guarantor. In turn, Ukrainian President Yushchenko already in June 2008 asked the Secretary General for an action plan for joining NATO. He also proclaimed Bandera and Shukhevych as heroes of Ukraine. President Yanukovych cancelled these decrees. He was overthrown in 2014.

Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity. In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas. If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy. Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements. Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns. 20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO. NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster? Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest. Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland. Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”. Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it. Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country. Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list. There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence). The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present. Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave. Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P. The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims). The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter. I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion. I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written. Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

I am surprised how little knowledge has Jeffrey Sachs about the whole historical process and reasons of the war. And I am scared that such a narrow minded person pretends to be an authority in this topic. He takes only 20% of the whole view and tells this is the only reason of the whole situation. His view on the case is totally US-centric and thinks that the whole world is circulating around the US. By the way, with such attitude, US will easily loose the competition with China. There was no plan of US to expand NATO to the east and circulate Russia. The process of NATO expansion was initialized by countries from middle-eastern Europe. In fact at the beginning US and countries of western Europe were against it. Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary had to convince them that they could join NATO. Joining NATO was fully supported by the nations of middle-eastern Europe. After the previous 200 years experience with Russia they knew that Russia is just a rubbish state. They wanted to join the western countries zone which was richer and better organised. At that time middle-eastern Europe countries were several times poorer than western Europe countries. So the whole process of expanding of NATO just came from the desire of middle-eastern Europe countries to have better life and better future for themselves and for their children. Last 30 years of history has shown that this was the very good decision. Mr. Sachs should read some books about the whole region of middle-eastern and eastern Europe. Maybe he is a good economist, but definietely not a good geopolitics.

As far as I understand, you want to say that the US does not lead NATO and does not decide who will be a member? Then why did Putin offer to US Russia to join NATO, but the condition is that it has the same status as the US, and it was flatly rejected? And that the US-GB accidentally sends weapons to Ukraine and trains Ukrainian soldiers since 2013 because it wants peace and not war? You probably also think that this is not a game between the US and Russia, but between Ukraine and Russia?
