The reassembly process continues, re conditioning the valves and seating surfaces, replacing the wrist pin, drilling the big end cap to accept a grease cup, fitting the cylinder oiler, fitting ring end gap, and then test running to see if the effort has paid off.

I really appreciate your confidence for the next video, as soon as the replacement rings are here we're going to get after it again. You guys really are great, I love reading all of your comments 👍

Well, I suppose you have to live and learn. You'll know for next time. Nice video, although frustrating for you. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.

I ordered another pair of rings from Debolt machine. I will be sure to limit the end gap this time. Frustrating, yes, but if this helps anyone it wasn't for nothing. We're all here together to learn and help each other. Thank you again for watching and commenting 👍. You guy's really are GREAT

Don't be sorry. I have learned something from this video as i'm sure so will have many others, We all learn from our own and other people's mistakes/ trials and errors. thank you.

What was that saying? " the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" ...... I feel foolish being over cautious about the end gap. Replacement rings are inbound now and we'll get it taken down and re-fit the new set as soon as possible. Thanks again for watching and commenting 👍

From my motor engineering aprenticeship back in the 60's we were tought two thou per inch of bore for ring gaps.

As soon as I rolled it over after fitting the head gasket I was thinking to myself "well that's much" .... As soon as the replacement rings from Debolt machine are here I'm going to be much less conservative on the end gap. I was and still am mad at myself for this snafu..... We'll get it, we're just not there yet... Thank you for watching and commenting 👍

As several others pointed out, your ring gap is a function of the heat expansion of the rings and that is related to heat & length of the piece. On tiny engines the gap can be almost invisible, that's part of why so many micro engine models use o-rings or go for ringless piston fits.

I agree with you, but I was also concerned about the difference in expansion between the cylinder (steel) piston (aluminum) and the rings (cast iron). I surely don't want to run o rings in this one, but the thought of it did cross my mind for a bit. If the replacement rings from Deboltmachine.com (with much less end gap) won't solve my self inflicted issue I will turn out a new piston to fit 3 rings (1 o ring and 2 cast ones).

@haroldbell1097 is correct. Another consideration is that hit and miss engines, if runnining prpoerly, run cool enough that the rings wont grow much. One more consideration is that as the rings seat, the ring gaps will open slightly. Another awesome video! Keep them coming out.

You're 100% correct. I screwed up on the ring gap though (nobody's fault but mine). I also have another engine kicking around that needs re rung due to poor compression (factory o rings). I've watched one of your videos about aluminum piston rings and I would love to learn more.

@@steam212 After some thought... Try positioning the gap of the ring furthest out (normally the oil control ring) at the bottom of the piston. Use 30 straight weight oil. Make sure the oil is wet on the piston skirt. You might be able to get it start. Having the gap at the bottom will allow oil to fill the gap and stay there. Having the gap at the top will allow the oil to drain away and air can scape. The gap position test might make a great video.

Bonjour from France, I am happy to find by chance you channel because even if I am a steam passionate like you are (more RC boats oriented however) I also like Hit & Miss engines. My first experience consisted in buying several Microcosm and Enjomor engines with whom I have also had a lot of problems, hopefully solved by good mechanic friend. I have recently disovered an engine branded "MISA HM-01" which I will purchase and thanks to this video I now discover this "Economy" engine. Could you tell me if it would be possible t get one yet and if so, where ? Thank you in advance for your answer, Amicalement, Raphaël

Welcome to the shop Raphael. I would like to tell you where you could buy one like this, but I found this one used on ebay and unfortunately there are no casting marks on it as to the who offered it originally. From what I understand (from what was included with the engine) it was built in the '80s and was taken to shows till the '90s and then it had sat for years until it was sold by the estate of the builder. I can say that I am impressed with the HM-01 engine. What a great kit and with a bit of refinement it will be a fantastic start into the hobby. Thank you for watching and commenting 👍. We're all here to help

I dont feel like .005" is too much, perhaps run it a bit more so the rings bed in to the cylinder and seal better. Is the bore a little out of round maybe?
@steam212
@steam212 5 ай бұрын
I would love to run it a bit more to help seat the rings in but the issue is that it loses compression, "peters out" , and dies. Honestly I didn't check the cylinder bore for taper or being egg shaped with a snap gauge (another oversight on my part) but it "felt" fine with no noticeable tightness or rattle fit throughout the bore. I will be much more conservative on the end gap with the replacement rings and we'll see how it goes. If needed I will bore it and turn a new piston out, one way or another it WILL run properly again. Thank you for the ideas and for commenting, you guys are GREAT 👍

I think if you BREAK THE RINGS IN IT WILL RUN OK!!! BEFORE YOU SWAP THEM IF NOTHING ELSE RIG UP SOMETHING TO HOOK TO IT AND SPIN IT FOR AN HOUR OR SO, TO HELP SEAT THOSE RINGS, BEFORE YOU WASTE TIME REPLACING THEM,,, I DON'T THINK IT'S A TOO MUCH GAP PROBLEM!!! once the rings are mated good with the cylinder walls the compression should come up and it should run good...

That's the problem, I did try that and yes it helped a bit. I am going out to the shop tonight to fit yet another set of rings to the new piston that I made, we'll reassemble it yet again and give it another shot. The reason I made a new piston is because I think the ring groove was too deep allowing the compression to escape under the rings if that makes sense. This engine has really taken the fun out of being in the shop for me, I have several other things I want to work on and share with you guys but..... That damn thing refuses to cooperate lol
