These are my simple car tricks so you can have one of the most reliable cars out there today. It just takes a few maintenance tips and tricks to get these cars to stay reliable and last forever. In fact, I don't think there's anything in here that's difficult, but if you don't do these things, owning your car will be a maintenance nightmare.
Let's make it reliable, fun, and enjoyable to own your car. With just a few car hacks, you'll be surprised at just how easy it is to keep most vehicles running for half a million miles.

Some really solid advice here, love the EGR valve information. I’ll definitely add it to my preventative maintenance checklist. Even if you do the basics, oil every 4,000 miles, transmission fluid every 40,000, air filter every 10,000, brake and radiator coolant every 5 years, fuel system every 10,000 etc, things like the EGR valve can ruin a fine car. Not neglecting chips and waxing 4 times a year is also fantastic. Dr. Color chip is an amazing solution for minor chips. The electric system is a tricky one. You definitely know how to keep any car running, awesome video man.

Save your money and only use the fuel grade listed in your owners manual. Lots of good info, just wanted to add that as long as you use a tier 1 fuel, (basically all the big name gas stations use tier 1 fuel), you only need to use the fuel grade reconmended for your engine. Using premium for an engine that requires 87 is a waste of money. Its all about engine compression and ignition timing and preventing detonation, (pre-ignition, a knock or ping sound that can damage pistons because the fuel/air mixture ignites before the piston reaches the top of its compression stroke.) Bottom line is if your engine is stock with stock timing, just use the recommended octane fuel and save your money, you wont notice any increase in performance by using a higher grade fuel.

Use synthetic, don't rev out the motor, drive slower. It's the revs, and harsh road conditions that wears out vehicles. Find out when the transmission likes to shift and let off the gas prematurely so there is some rev matching for the transmission.

You are absolutely right, driving style helps a lot to make a vehicle last a long time. Differential and transmission fluid may also be fluids to consider depending on use and type. Torque converter vs Double clutch vs manual, etc.

Some cars get a milky mix on the oil cap due to the owners using the car for short circuits specially during cold weather.. in summer time or running longer periods of time that milky stuff on oil cap disappear

Although I no longer rev the engine to "tune" the car (like back in the day), I do believe in "warming up " the car for a bit. After allowing the engine to idle for a minute, to allow oil to circulate, I drive slowly to allow the other systems to stabilize and get lubrication. Probably old guy syndrome 😂. I definitely deviate from the manufacturer recommended interval with oil changes. Even with the synthetic oil, I'm sure as hell changing it sooner than 10000 miles. Great video, as always!

Thanks again Thomas and that is a good approach, letting it idle shortly and then drive lightly to let the tranny and engine warm up gradually. I remember a bunch of years ago with my old late 70s Chevy trucks that I would have to pump the gas a few times to start it especially in the winter and then flooring it a few times just ti keep it running, likely not great for the engine, but it shows how robust those old tanks were.

I think keeping the interior clean is important. I have seen cars covered in mould on YT JUST ROLLED IN and cars with loads of trash in the interior. Keeping the clear coat clean and waxing a few times a year keeps the clear coat elastic and prevent delamination. Since new, I have had my Tundra KROWN RUST protected and have a car wash pass with VALET and my wash has under carriage blast. My nephew looked under my Tacoma a few years ago and couldn't believe how clean it was. So, car wash with under carriage blast is a must. Some people say that a car wash will damage the paint...well so will salt and dirt.

I'm no expert but I know modern vehicles are treated for Rust now from the Factory. However if you ask around people really have issues with Rust on their new vehicles fairly soon and i am one of them. I had a 2020 Durango and after one winter my entire bottom was covered in Superficial Rust already. And I would wash it ASAP after every Storm.

I recently bought a used mazda cx5 2015 130k miles on it,,car is in very good shape..i changed all necessary fluids but when i was going to buy atf from the dealer they told me that there is no need to change the atf on skyactive mazdas,,they have long life atf that does not need to be changed only if there is a problem with the gearbox,,iam really confused about that,,what is your advice,,thanks...

They still need maintenance. I’ve owned many Toyota 4Runners and their paint and rust protection is quite poor honestly. Mechanically they are very reliable because their engines are iterations of decades old designs. Any vehicle needs to be maintained to get a long life

Hard to argue with what you said but I also suggest people obtain a halfway decent scanner and learn how to use it. Even if you don't do any of the work yourself you can keep an eye on fuel trims and misfires ect. Its pretty easy to obtain a chart of known goods and compare it to what your looking at on your scanner. Some cars can be way out of spec before they trip codes. Cars can be a big investment so their worth a 6 pack on a Sunday afternoon.

You are totally right and I have a couple myself. I have some that you plug in a dongle and use an app and others that are the whole device. A must have in your garage. It’s also a great way to validate any codes that your car may send out especially if you would like to keep your mechanic honest.

So sad that there is only a few cars that can really last 500,000 miles today. Most cars will require a major cost to repair and the owner just trades it off and soon the junk yard gets it. Manufactures do not want to build a quality car..all about profit and heck on the buyer. Times we live in.

Sadly you are right in many cases and it’s a very throw away society from phones to tvs to cars. If a person commits, many of these cars can run the distance but often people get bored and move onto the next toy.

i change my oil in my camaro every 2k miles. it's never dirty. always mobil 1 aswell. been using that in my cars since they invented it in the 80's never had a motor fail in 3 million miles of driving

Mobile 1 is not the quality oil it once was. Mobile 1 changed its formula to a cheaper made oil. So the customer is being fooled into thinking he is still buying a good product. All about profit and heck on the customer. Sadly we are being screwed, but big business is like that. Best look at AMS oil for the best or one of the best on the market...started in 1972 I believe.

I got a 2014 cadillac CTS 150k miles on it, transmission and motor run great. Rear Differential suck ass tho. Replaced the rear Differential 3 times since I owned the car.

Many European cars are high performance cars which means they need a little extra attention, but when it comes to rust corrosion European cars are most resistant to rust. Use more aluminum and glavanized body panels. Japanese cars and American cars are getting better but not the same protection level as European cars.

Some cars won't make 200,000 miles period. My 2006 Hyundai Sonata went to the junkyard this year with 152,000 miles on it. A big money pit. It finally was going to cost too much to fix it. The engine basically needed replacing. Every year something was breaking costing a lot to repair. Regular oil changes can't fix bad quality parts that break. Also the car was rusting to the ground. In the junkyard are many old sonatas. Maybe Toyotas, Hondas and Mercedes can go 500,000 miles. Hyundai is one that can't make 200,000. The newer ones burn to the ground.

Not true, you just didn't take care of the Car, Hyundai, Genesis reliability is number 1, even beat Lexus. Rust you didn't wash the car normally. I had a 2009 Genesis 4.6 with the V8 excellent in reliability and luxury. I have a Genesis G90 5.0 Htrac Ultimate these cars are designed to go easily 400k miles or more with rountine maintenance.

You fumbled the ball when you said premium fuel does good things for a normal engine that doesnt require high octane. High octane fuel in a low compression engine caused accelerated carbon deposits, which in the long run can kill your engine. Only use high octane premium fuel in engines that require it.

I hate EGRs... They actually redirect exhaust gases from your exhaust pipe back into the intake port to be re-burned. Nice way to keep your engine filthy and carbon built up. The last time I had a car with an EGR, I blocked it off.
