We also had a 1996, 328iC, E36 (convertible addiction), no leaks. Old legends never die. Likewise, no major failures in any 3 cars. But I did much preventative maintenance, so we were never stranded on a road trip. It's a BMW. But it doesn't burn cash like a Porsche. We don't drive like a track GT3 car and break things. A lot of people dynoing these and getting 270 HP. Have both a 335i N54 and an M240i B58, night and day. Purchased a 2007 335i E93 6mt as a CPO in 2011 with 35k. Here's my list, radio head unit under warranty, rebuilt dsc/abs motor, filter housing gaskets, water pump, serpentine belt, pulley and tensioner fouled by oil leaks, vanos solenoids, and hpfp. Carbon walnut blasting at 75k. Need to do valve cover and oil pan gaskets and rear main seal. AT205 is keeping leaks under control for now. Oh, and two rear cracked rims, warranty refused. At 125k, compression is over 190psi in all cylinders, and oil analysis is good. Purchased 2018 M240i F23 8sp auto in 2021 with 22k. So far, parking brake cable bracket under warranty, glad that I have one!! That's it. Now at 45k, time will tell. Most of the things he mentioned are issues with the earlier 2 series that has the N20 motor. Stick to 2017+ for the B48 or B58 and it will treat you well. Parts are more than a Japanese car. Maintenance is more often. But it's also something very unique. The only thing comparable is an Evo X or STI. While those are Japanese cars, I feel like reliability may be a toss up between the BMW or Evo. The Evo is a much cheaper interior but you may not mind once you drive it.

The 2 series BMW is basically, an entry level BMW. If that Black 230i was built and designed at the same level as my 2016 M6, noone would buy the more expensive BMW's. For the price point, I feel you are still getting a very nice vehicle with many of the quality designs and looks, inside and out. And, again, the engine and drivetrain are, for the most part, only as good as you treat it. If people drove Toyotas like many drive BMW M series cars, you would probably see many highways littered with broken down Toyotas. And vise versa, you would probably see a lot less BMW's in the shop. I had to laugh my ass off when I found out that Toyota doesnt even have the cahoona's to put their own engine in their Supra (they put a BMW engine in there instead). The only time my M6 has ever been in the shop is for scheduled maintenance and oil changes and my BMW dealership is always more than happy to price match any other place as long as the level of service is the same. BTW, I baby my BMW and drive it better than most would. As always, especially as of late, I find your videos very informative, fair and fun to watch.

I've heard one of the main reasons for BMW's sudden improvement in reliability is their partnership with Toyota in the Z4/Supra projects - Toyota simple wouldn't accept BMW's products as they were and pretty much demanded BMW step up their quality to meet Toyota's standards. Kind of makes sense when you realize just when it was BMW's reliability started to improve.

Let's just call it a good compromise between performance and reliability. The sweet spot between 230i and M2.

@@japanwatchconnection bmw is literally the best when it comes to aggressive performance, nobody tops them on the streets especially the ///M engines these vehicles are just not for everybody, because they require immediate maintenance, and attention, when a bmw engine low oil light comes on, the average dummy thinks it’s the best idea to top off the oil level, and this is exactly how to damage the engine, because you absolutely cannot top off your oil levels without a dipstick, so bmw low oil light means, you need to do a complete oil change, topping off dirty oil that already peaked its viscosity is a recipe for timing chain failure, running old oil on a cheap budget, you get more friction, oil won’t lubricate or keep the engine cool during hot operation, and this is why bmw is not for broke folks, if you daily drive bmw, and cannot change your oil every two months, leave these machines alone, get a Kia 😆
