Don't bother touching any of these unreliable cars! They have some of the worst engines in them and I just can't recommend you buy these. In fact, these are cars to avoid!
So much so, that we're going to start off with a vehicle that burnt to a crisp! We'll see Hyundai, BMW, Ford, and a few other makers that have just missed the mark in my opinion!

The Porsche Cayenne is a pretty reliable German car it’s expensive to maintain but it could last up to like 200,000-250,000 miles. All the others are headaches & money pits before even touching 100k miles (Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen etc)

@bryancarlson3673 yes in the 1980’s as a schoolboy then admittedly I had no experience but some of my friends parents who were lucky to be able to pay more money would instead of getting an Austin Rover car would get a BMW or Mercedes because they were German and the engineering reputation they have. At the end of the 90’s my mate picked up a 325 that was a 1988 or 89 model if I remember. Lovely nice strong car with the fantastic straight 6 engine. I was helping my boss one day check her oil in a 1 series and was shocked to look under the hood. I couldn’t understand why even though she has no mechanical knowledge was not able to top her oil up. I found a square plastic oil cap that had got stuck on from all the heat, and not enough room around the rocker cover to get a good grip to remove it. I looked around further and saw all the rest of the plastic and thought “this is a BMW”?. A few days later I told a mechanic in my local pub and he says it’s common problem, he’s made a makeshift tool for removing stuck oil caps on modern BMW’s and said they were trash. Nice to drive yes and quite a few are good looking cars but endless money pits due to poor design and quality and plastics. I also couldn’t believe how black her oil was and that’s when I heard about the ridiculous 20000 mile service interval. Pure gimmick, even fully synthetic oil doesn’t last anywhere near that long. The maximum miles anyone should go is 10000 and that’s if journeys are long so minimal stop start driving. For around town driving and short commutes to work the oils best performance is only good for 5000. At 5000 on my Focus the oil is starting to look a bit dirty but even at a 5000 change you can hear the difference with fresh oil, it’s quieter on cold start and quieten downs a little quicker too with that fresh oil and filter. Longer than 5000 I’d feel I was damaging the engine using old oil let alone 20000. So even on a 4 year old car my boss was burning oil in that 1 series. And if the car has turbos and oil is only changed every 20000 that’s just ridiculous, new turbos and an engine prematurely wearing out. I suppose people that can afford to change their car every 2 or 3 years won’t see the damage, it’s the people who end up buying a used BMW with low mileage like 60000 and thinking great I’ve got a fairly new 4-5 year old BMW with only 60000 miles only to find the turbos are really whining from damage from old oil clogging up the return feed and starving them of oil and they are putting a litre of oil in every 1000 miles, and the car is about to become a huge moneypit.

Most engines today (GDI & GDI/Turbo engines) are garbage for extended reliability, compared to most of the naturally-aspirated port-injected engines that preceded them. People who fell for the 10K oil change scam also made it even worse. Automakers today only build to meet fuel-economy regulation requirements & to last the engine/power-train warranty period & could care less beyond that. They want you in a new vehicle every 4-5 years (or sooner).

Manufactures trying to crank out more power from a small engine leads to issues. I prefer bigger engines with less stress on them, yes they use more fuel but last way way longer. My wife’s car has a twin cam 1.6 four banger that’s 35 years old with just over 100 hp and N/A, original clutch also. It’s also fuel efficient.

The worst car I ever bought was a 2011 F150 , It was broke down so often I had to buy a used car to get around in and after 2 years that truck only had 56,000klm on it '' mostly highway'' and the dealer said '' If I was you id dump this because in 4000klm the warranty for everything but the motor and trans is done. So I traded it for a 2014 Toyota that only lasted 3 months before the trans was slipping so bad I was not able to get on the highway or up the hill to my house and the dealer said when it stops moving we can fix it '' first and last toyota for me '' so I traded that for a kia and got 2 years out of that before the motor lost 50% of it's power, I could not pass on the highway so if I got behind a big truck I was stuck there, New cars are junk and they are made of used can's and plastic and then they want you to pay 3 times the price,

In the UK. I picked up a Ford Focus but was very wary of a 3 cylinder 1.0 turbo Eco Boost. On the MK3 very soon after introduction those 3 cylinder are your only choice. I was lucky and grabbed a tried and trusted Duratec engine, a 4 cylinder 1.6 vct with no wet belt or the dodgy oil pump. It’s a manual not a Powershift auto transmission, the big problem with especially US as most people don’t drive manuals. Change oil full synthetic every 5000 miles and it doesn’t burn any oil. Picked up at 67k miles a few years ago on nearly 98k and hope to have it many years I look after it and never neglect those oil changes. Had a water pipe leak and need replacing and a regulator on the drivers window but fingers crossed it’s been a good car and nice to drive. Focus handoff very nice for a small family hatchback. Nice sound quality on the in car entertainment lots of options, easy Bluetooth connection for my iPhone, voice control, parking sensors etc. decent spec for a 2011 Ford, the interiors are vastly improved over the Mark 2’s which I always thought looked too basic.

Toyota will eventually fix it and the engine will become near bullet proof, but for now I would avoid any Toyota Tundra 2024 and older with the Turbo V6 engine. Maybe the 2025 models will be good since they did improve with the 2024 models, but I would wait and get a 2025 if I were in the market for a Tundra.

Got another 50,000 miles and sold it for $1300. N54 B.M.W. inline 6 turbo 300 horsepower engine. I have a 2016 Chrysler 200C AWD with 3.6 liter Pentastar engine no turbo with 295 horsepower, I have 50,000 miles on car, I changed the synthetic oil every 6 months because I never come close to 5,000 miles on oil change. I was little concerned about 2019 jeep cherokee overland 2.0l 4x4, because of 2.0 liter turbo and 270 horsepower from such small displacement, (Chrysler purducing turbo engine since 80's, reliability should be good, I did have a 87 turbo charged engine from Chrysler and got 250,000 miles out of engine) purchased extended warranty be on safe side from Mopar (replace center screen because just turn off mopar replaced with new screen) and I have 43,000 miles been really good engine gives me 26 miles a gallon average, has really good throttle response.

As I get older, I want boring cars. So what to drive? Toyota, Honda, and my personal favorite -- second generation Lexus with a 2GR-FE.
