There used to be a term, "conspicuous consumerism" which translates as, "keeping up with the Jones's". In the 80's, the "young upwardly mobile" junior execs all raced out to buy their BMW's. They actually didn't plan on keeping them more than a year or so because they planned to trade them as soon as possible. Consider this to the younger mentality of expensive and flashy sneakers. I'm a baby boomer who grew out of poverty and had to make every penny last. Since then, I've always bought a vehicle with intentions of keeping it at least 10 years and/or 150K miles before thinking about replacing it.

I don't completely agree. I believe the consumer caused the increase prices in cars and the automobile companies ran away with it. People prefer SUVs and Trucks and naturally they will cost more than a car. Then people need the heated steering wheels, expensive infotainment systems which drive the cost of cars. Just a few years ago many companies offered a variety of cheap entry level vehicles but people stopped buying them so they are gone off the market. Today everyone wants an X5, Lexus RRH350 and Ford F150s. So if people want those vehicles or any thing close to it you will have to pay for it.

And there you have it, the list of cars that the original owners knew enough to dump before the warranty was up. The question is not why to dump but when. It is also a good idea to check vehicle history when buying CPO or low mileage /one (responsible) owner cars to see what inherent gremlins have infected the vehicle. We bought a new 2007 Jaguar X-Type at such time from a Jaguar dealer and the electrical system suffered a complete failure at 14K miles. It was under warranty but we dumped that car on a trade-in while it was being repaired at Jaguar because this seemed to be a forecast of things to come. The trade was for a Lincoln T-Car, which was more reliable despite the same company ownership.

Our 2013 Santa Fe gave us a lot of anxiety when the dealership said all our car needed was an engine flush and firmware update after alot of noises and tensioner replacements. They did extend the warranty by 20,000 miles which was good because the engine failed at 110000 and we got a replacement. We've had no other problems and we're gonna see how long we can keep it.

My 2017 Giulia has 65K miles and I've never had a problem in almost six years. Years ago I got into a big argument with a friend who swore the Alfa spec oil (that was hard to find five years ago) was "BS" because any oil of the proper weight would be fine. I said "if Alfa says use only this spec, that is the spec I will use, I don't care it costs twice as much as Supertech at Wal-Mart". I also had a 2012 Enclave for years that I gave to a young relative (still going strong at 160K miles) and when I got it my mechanic said "make sure you top off between oil changes, that GM 3.6 can stretch its chain due to low oil". He said 90% of the GM 3.6 we get in for stretched timing chain, the owner left oil in too long or didn't put enough in. So that's what I did and here it is at 160K purring like a kitty. I've learned that there are no unreliable cars, only unreliable owners.

Had a 2011 Optima 274,000 km, it was using 2 liters of oil between oil changes. They only continue to go down hill from there, and it's not worth getting a used engine because it will be having issues of it's own. Then there is the cvt trans that should be seviced early in its life, but KIA will tell you not to touch. It's bad cars like these that help put people upside-down in their car loans because they can't afford the repair bill so they flip into a new loan on another car just to maintain a set monthly payment. Not saying it's right, it's just what they do.

I agree with the comment that new cars are so expensive many consumers balk of having to spend so much money on one. So the solution is to buy a good reliable used car. I bought a used 2014 Honda still under warranty. It now has 145,009 miles on the odometer. It actually has been reliable though not quite as good as the 1992 Honda which I finally had to get rid of at 295,092 miles. Extended warranties I find could be valuable in the long run.

I drove from NYC to Florida 3 times, from Florida to Virginia twice, from Florida to Nevada & back to Florida, from Florida to South Carolina & back to Florida, and from Florida to Arkansas 2x & back, 🗣 NOT A SINGLE REPPAIR DONE besides routine maintenance. And that was all done this year from April to November. Can't wait to 👀 where we go Rogue next year🤔🤷🏽 I did buy new tires because i did do alot of driving but all cars & trucks need tire replacement after x amount of miles. No matter what you drive, keep up with your regular scheduled maintenance & you'll be fine.

Reliable car formula: -NA big enough engine 2.0l 1.8l (1.5l hatch) -Manual gearbox or 6/5/4 speed automatic. -Port injection system (no GDi). -Non hybrid high voltage system. Unfortunately manufacturer don't make these car anymore. CVT are cheaper, plastic are easier to make and the final nail in the coffin emission standard.

This guy is clearly over exaggerated with regards to the Murano. I own a 2016 Murano with 130k and the V6 is so dependable. As for the CVT transmission, it still operates as it did brand new. However I change the fluid every 35k miles and it isn't cheap. Like every car it isn't perfect and I have had sunroof drain plug issues in the A-Piller. Overall extremely happy I bought this vehicle.

I have had 4 Nissans and have one still. Never had an issue. So, no I dont undestand the hate. Motor issues? The Nissan V6 3.5l is one of the best. Nissan make good used cars because you can get them cheaper than Honda/Toyota. Saab 9-3? Mine never had an issue. FIAT ? My dad drove his into the ground (in Europe) with over 400,000 miles. VWs? Yes I have had problems with my old Passat. However, these here are NOT Euro vehicles - in the US they are made in Mexico/Brazil. In Europe VW are THE most popular car and with the right maintenance run upwards of 300,000 miles (500,000 km). BMW diesel? What you talking about dude, this is the best diesel SUV, like ever. My cousin still drives his and its past 260,000 miles. Yes ERG/DPF etc. - you just change those - I will take a straight 6 diesel before anything. Now old Jags? No, I dont think so...I would take a 2.0l diesel Jag built after 2019 ANY day!0

I owned a certified pre owned BMW 320i xdrive. It was a 2014 model and I got it in 2017 with ~33k miles on it. I owned it for 5 years and sold it at the end of last year with 95 K miles on it. I was in school back then and was able to get in a cheap BMW.. It had the so called the infamous N20 engine I guess. Besides brake pads, tires and regular maintenance I didn't pay for any major problems. Great way to get into the brand and no regrets. At the end of the day it all depends on how you drive and take care of your car.

IF you absolutely need a used MINI Cooper, ask about used car warranty coverage if it's available. MINIs are a PITA to fix when something major goes wrong because the previous owner abused it or tried to mod it and screwed up big time. The strange irony is that if you got a good NORMAL aspirated (i.e. no supercharger) MINI you'll be fine for another 50,000 miles or so. (2009-10 were excellent years for reliability, BUT only if it has the 6 speed manual). I did have one or two issues on my '09 but everything else was bulletproof and the engine never gave me issues.
