In Sweden about 80 % of BMW sold are bought by companies! They lease the cars for 3-4 years and the employees drive maximum 100-120,000 km with the cars... Do they have any problems? No, what so ever. The reliability and the costs are a problem for the next owner/owners. Then the costs of the unreasonable pricey spare parts fall in the pockets of those who are "forced" to have insurances. I think the insurance companies keep the carmakers afloat, at the end!!! The car industry is an enormous waste of natural resources, without that anyone is blaming! Maybe it's, at least, a step forward when we talk about reliability!?

Agreed. Just about every german manufacturer uses plastic in their engine compartments. It’s to keep cost down so they can sell at a lower price point. If one manufacturer, say Audi, we’re to use all aluminum parts in their engine, their reliability would go up yes, but their car would be 3k more than the competitors, losing market. Since all of them use plastic, they’re all prone to failure. Solution: notice which parts are prone to failure and buy OEM+ aluminum parts👍

When i think of reliability i think of cars past 120k miles. Thats the bottom line i think every car should be able to go without any issues. If a car doesnt need major repairs from 120k to 300k miles, i consider that solid and reliable engine. I find it pointless when people brag about their cars being reliable and have less than 120k miles. I would hope you havent had problems! Thats practically new to me still! Just my opinion.

Facts. I owned a 2016 Malibu Limited LTZ for a little less than 3 years. Drove it from 60k miles to 160k miles and needed no major repairs. Got into an accident and my insurance deemed it totaled. They gave me $12k for it. I bought it for just under $11k. Have also owned a 2001 330i and currently a 2010 328i. My 330i was at 230k miles, when I sold it. I wish I didn't. Didn't do any major repairs on it, per se. It had a vacuum leak and I just replaced the entire CCV system just because everything was like $50. My 328i is at 210k miles. I drive it daily, unlike I did fro my 330i. Biggest repair I had to do was replace the ECU and engine harnesses. They got water damaged. Besides that, nothing major. Engine has been very solid. Thanks for being the messenger on automobile reliability. The public is grossly ignorant about automobiles in part because they are wealthy enough to not have to be knowledgeable. If you own an aging BMW out of warranty, better have an uncle or brother who is a BMW tech or there goes little Johnny's college fund. One thing you stated in your video which resonates with me an automotive engineer is...the more complex the vehicle aka higher end BMW's with greater engine and driveline complexity, the more failures you will have. In engineering parlance this is called reliability cost. A radio knob will always be more reliable than a Rolex mechanical movement which is highly engineered. Probability of failure is proportional to number of moving parts. Keep up the good work.

My family (based in Germany) has owned several Bimmers over the years - a 1999 E38 (imho the best looking 7 Series to date), a 2011 E84 (1st gen X1), a 2014 F25 (2nd gen X3), and a 2016 F48 (2nd gen X1). All had at least 150,000km on the clock, the E38 had 250,000km on the clock when we sold the respective vehicles. Never encountered any major problems, but we did all the required maintenance and some extra service e.g. changing the transmission oil every 80,000-100,000 km, which extended the lifespan of the respective transmissions. Providing the cars with all this service was not a cheap endeavour, though, as one can imagine, that's the downside of owning a Bimmer, sort of like having a very demanding girlfriend. 😐😉

Yes, even though BMW says its "lifetime", im looking to change out transmission oil and filter at 60k on my 535 as per ZF the maker of the transmission. Dealer wants $1200 to do this. Robbery. The kit including ZF fluid can be had for $300. Looking at other options.

@kjhnsn7296 We were lucky, my father was on good terms with one of our local BMW dealers and an independent garage owner in our neighbourhood, which meant we got acceptable discounts. 😁 I'm afraid 1,200$ is rather the norm for this kind of maintenance, last year I had a transmission fluid change done on my Audi SQ7 at an independent local garage, which set me back 1,100€. 😐

I feel blessed by the Reliability Genie having owned an M2 (2020), M4(2016), 530i, XM 550i (2022), and now a (2023) XM 760i with only a flat tire on the 530i. Yes, I was OCD about maintenance and preventive repair/replacement and was a Dealer's Unicorn when it came to replacing components before they passed life expectancy. I trusted my Service Advisor and she and the mechanics rewarded me with beautiful well-maintained vehicles that ran perfectly no matter how many dumb things I did to them! My wife basically pushed me into the Driver's seat of the (23) 760 and said it was time for true luxury. I feel comfortable knowing that the Dealership Owner had this car before me. You know it was well-maintained! So, thank-you for your insights!

Other than tires, battery & brakes have never had ANY problems with it. At 100,000 I did change the timing belt & water pump as suggested at 80,000. Dealership & repair shops wanted 1,500-1,900. I got the belt & water pump for 202 and did it myself. YOU'LL NEVER FIND A NEW OR NEWER BMW THAT CAN GO FOR 17 YEARS WITHOUT MAJOR PROBLEMS.

I’ve owned a 230i for a little over 6 months and I’ve smoked 370Z, Challanger RT Hemi, Trans Am WS6, STI and V6 Camaros. The B48 is a stout 4 banger that will easily outperform much larger engines. BMW claims 250hp but I suspect 260 at the wheels 280 at the crank and torque has to be over 300 lb because it launches like nobody’s business.

"temperature swings are the enemies of plastics": yeah, and in the old days, they would just make stuff out of metal, and the problem wouldn't exist in the first place. lol
@ECPP Жыл бұрын
Haha, true, I hear that
@starboard9551 Жыл бұрын
True, though the main reason for using plastic nowadays is primarily for weight savings and for BMWs in particular it's for helping to balance out the car so that the front end and the rear end weigh close to the same amount. Plastic is also a better insulator than metal so as long as it doesn't get overheated it actually helps keep the engine warmer when the car's off, which means it's actually the main thing that prevents the rapid temperature swings.
@nycupperes Жыл бұрын
I had read that the new B engines hold in heat much longer in the closed deck design, to avoid any sudden temperature changes. If I drive my 740xi in the morning, and go for lunch, the temp gage is not cold.
