I had 7 BMW cars. They never failed me. All you have to do is change oil every 3,500-5000 miles, change all the hoses and pulleys every 45K miles, flush coolant and brake fluid every 2 years. My 2013 535i costed me $3,500 in maintenance over 10 years including the breaks.

Every 3500 miles the oil change? That proves we have to be too careful with those cars to avoid having a very expensive failure. Even brands like Peugeot or Renault won't need an oil change so frequently and they would last easily up to 100k miles w/o major expensive repairs

All I know is CPO is THE way to go! I purchased a 2021 X3 M40i this weekend. 24,000 miles, fully loaded, $51k. Still has prepaid maintenance, and a warranty until June of 2026 with UNLIMITED miles. If it breaks, I get a loaner. Seems like the best way to go if you want a BMW.

I had a 2004 BMW 325i that I bought as a CPO in 2007. What a joke from the dealer. I thought CPOs had to meet certain strict criteria. Once I got mine home I started finding all kinds of things that I had to make the dealer fix. Ridiculous! Things you wouldn’t necessarily notice until you got it home and really got down and noticed. I think the previous owner had a dog, I found so much dog hair in the back of car, a lot of wear also for a car that new and only 29,000 or 30,000 when I purchased it. Dirty carpet , broken plastic at the foot well of the back door. I can’t even remember everything, but it was really ridiculous what the shoved off on me. Looking back I should have taken more action, at least given them a piece of my mind good and proper, better I should have made a huge scene right in the dealership. They also at first refused to give me a loaner car to fix the broken crap that existed when I bought because I live out of state, but not far out of state. I made sure I would be able to get loaner vehicles if need be before I purchased then be refused. I called them out and needless to say I was given a loaner. What a bunch of jerks and idiots. That’s why I hate to step foot in a dealer because they are all crooks-- bottom line!

Hopefully it still has the autolock keyfob function. I have a 535 and set the car to lock automatically once the key fob is certain distance away from the car. You set the car to ventilate at certain times. So the interior will be nice and comfortable to and from work. I'm still amazed at how comfortable the car is. But sports mode just brings the car alive and it turns into a running back in a suit.

If you're not up for it emotionally or financially just buy a Lexus.

Speaking about disks and tires - this is so true. I own my BMW for 3 months and already scratched my disk somewhere. I don't even know how and when it happened. The roads in Massachusetts are full of potholes. I guess this is the reality that we live in. With regards to costs - you will get what you paid for. Nice car = solid amount of money. Also, if you want to drive more reliable BMW don't buy M-Sport. Those vehicles are optimized for performance which always means to service more often than usual. Plus their engines are running at higher RPM and hotter which means oil degrades faster. So replace oil as early as possible. Furthermore, a lot depends on your driving style - if you like to be a show-off driver then you will get more wear&tear. My friend who owned a few BMWs told me to replace oil every 5k miles.
@BeamerView
@BeamerView Жыл бұрын
Great points, I also live in Mass, so I know exactly what you mean lol. M-Sport packaged vehicles are mainly aesthetic upgrades not on performance, aside from the suspension being 25 percent more stiff. Yes, the real M cars would be considered less reliable. These vehicles are meant to be driven as performance first, reliability 2nd for sure. BMW does have 10k Mile oil changes but I agree it does seem a bit steep, I would do it every 7500.
@blocksource4192
@blocksource4192 Жыл бұрын
I dont even get 5k miles in a year so....
@k1zmt
@k1zmt Жыл бұрын
@@blocksource4192 even if you don’t drive a lot you have to replace oil regularly because it degrades over the time. There’s oil oxidation process that happens over time. It is not that fast for synthetic oils but once a year is a good frequency. When the oil oxidizes or breaks down it clogs the channels inside the engine so other parts are a little bit less lubricated which is often results in additional damage to the parts and worsening the heat. Oil is naturally driving the heat off the frictional parts. You might not be able to notice it visually but the viscosity of the oil becomes higher. The higher viscosity slowing down the flow and increasing the temperature of the engine and parts which makes everything worse.

Other than general maintenance it’s been a really good car and has served us well. The 2016 has had no major issues however my parking sensor module failed but I’m not going to worry about that right now. It’s an $800 repair and since my drivetrain is unaffected I’ll leave it for now. Other than usual maintenance, tires brakes it’s running fine at 77k. We plan on keeping them awhile longer but will prob not buy more bmws in future because we don’t want to be paying big maintenance costs into retirement age. So far it’s been good with the exception of coolant leak that turned out to be the coolant tank lid needed to be replaced which was kind of a red flag for me given that the car is young and doesn’t have much miles on other. So far, I drove it for 10k over two years and I’m a very modest driver. Question is, does 2018 have a history of reliability issues? Thanks in advance

I personally wouldn't own it since that was the first year that design was introduced, usually those are the ones with the most problems since all the parts are new and as the design ages, they make better changes along the way. If you already have it and its working fine, no big deal all. All come downs to how you take care of it, but I would highly recommend having warranty with it and I personally would not own it without warranty.

Great video and spot on. Owning a BMW is a love-hate type of relationship. You'll love the power and the ride, but you'll hate the repairs especially if you own it past 5 years or 100K. Either get a new BMW after 100K or have a best friend who is a mechanic. I also HIGHLY recommend the wheel and tire protection. I told a friend to get this a few years ago and she has already been through 3 tires because of potholes and curbing. I do agree with you, once you own one and drive it, it can really be hard to switch brands

I got a '14 F10 528i for a low price at 69000 miles and replaced suspension parts up to the average retail value of the car so it drives like brand new. BMW had already replaced the valve cover and oil filter housing, injectors etc under motor plan. I fitted Dunlop tyres and find them super quiet for run-flats. I am now on 106000 miles and experienced no repairs as I replace the oil every 10000km. I find that if these cars are not driven hard and are well looked after, their long term maintenance costs may not be a drop in the bucket in comparison to the cost of new models. I am budgeting to replace the valve gasket cover and filter housing with control arms every 60000 miles. The car still drives like new and find it more spaceous and comfortable than the new 5 G series. My 18" tyres handle potholes extremely well with no tyres repairs. I have a motor warrantee with my insurance company at a very small monthly fee for any repairs up to 350000km.

This is exactly why I bought a 2023 540i a few weeks back. End of the G30 cycle, about as rock solid as it can get, fully engineered at the end of the lifecycle, and won't have near the issues the new model will when it drops next year. Plus, i think the 2023 540i looks way better than the 2024 model, not a fan of all the changes BMW made, and they ruined the interior IMO...it looks like a freakin tesla on the inside, not like the luxury car it should be. Also not a fan of the "everything on the touchpad". Being forced to fiddle with the touch display to do even simple things like raise or lower the temperature is going distract people and get them killed, especially older drivers who are technologically challenged. Terrible design decision all around for the 2024 model....

Both are good years to buy from, probably the best if you ask me since BMW had 3 years to work out the kinks on that 2022 model year. I would go with the 17K miles since you should still have some factory warranty with it. 36K miles is not bad but it is quite a lot of miles for a 2022, if you do go with this one, I'd highly recommend getting extended warranty with it, but then if you were to do that you might as well pay for the 17K one.

I never buy used cars, CPO’s even. I’ve witnessed how hard people drive their cars these days, especially leased cars. They drive off right after starting on cold mornings, as if it’s been running for an hour, brake hard, use cheap gas, use regular gas in premium only cars, etc. I once ran over to warn a driver at the gas station he’s putting regular in a Benz. He said, “I don’t care, it’s a lease.” Those actions will cost you once you buy it. When I buy a BMW, I’m getting it brand new. I’m not fixing someone else’s abuse.

Yeah I could agree that there is less care taken on leased vehicles. I would still be okay buying certified as long as I can look at the vehicle and tell that it was well taken care of. That is the concern I have with BMW and in general with German brands (Audi, Mercedes): they are great to drive, look very nice most of their models and feel luxurious (no question), but their reliability is not there. Despite saying you will be fine up to 100k miles following a good maintenance plan, that is not totally true, because it would depend on the country you live in (if you don't have many highways, lots of road & city driving doesn't helps these cars), the model (as you mentioned M models are more fragile) and time to cover those 100k miles (if you don't do much driving per year, taking those cars into the 10 year mark is very risky). One of my best friends & neighbor had a Mercedes C180 (I ride in that car many times), followed full maintenance plan and had a gear box failure at 75k miles (which cost him a fortune to repair, plus all the weeks car down waiting for spares); after that he set his car for sell and had to repair during that time other non cheap issues (water leak, oil pump failure, etc). I own a 2013 Audi A4 1.8T very well maintained with under 62k miles and had a misfire some months ago in cylinder 2 - after different visits to the dealership, they've found the timing chain stretched (supposedly, since car was only showing problem only a low revs) and had valve & engine head damage (still at the dealer waiting for spares): total of ~$5k and more than 4M almost stopped. When I bought the car second hand with full maintenance record, it had already a gear box repair at ~25k miles 😮. If we had truthful data, based on many comments, reviews and personal experience, I would say 50-60% of the cars from these German brands are "reliable" up to 100k miles with good maintenance and good driving conditions (and as long they are under 10 years old), and after that >80-90% becomes money drainers. Is not coincidence their resale is so low after 3 years - their reliability past that time has many dependencies and they are risky buys after first ownership. My advice: despite being so nice to drive cars, don't buy them; you are causing a problem in the used car market promoting very faulty cars running around that would become garbage (like EV would be) after 10 years

I think for the most part when it comes to getting a used BMW make sure you get a certified vehicle from a dealership and make sure to note the maintenance that was preformed throughout its life via CARFAX. That will tell you what was maintained and done by a certified mechanic. If you can definitely test drive a BMW you’re interested in to get a feel of how it rides and definitely how it accelerates and brakes ALONG with the feel of transmission and shifts that’s important as that’s definitely a costly part if needed replacement. Other than that it will be little things but if you can DIY then you’ll definitely save $$$

Not sure where you came up with those numbers. I just bought a loaded 2021 CPO X3 M40i (Carbon black) for $43k, 30k miles, still has 15 months of factory warranty, and another year of CPO warranty after that. Inside and out basically new, new tires, new brakes, and various minor repairs made (scratches and some computer issues). It has everything I want including a tow package, spare tire package, drivers+, HK, parking+, prem pkg, leather, upgraded wheels, etc. The almost identical car new (differences - well, the facelift, the driver's assistance pro and it was sapphire black which looked pretty much the same) was $74170 without the tow pkg or spare tire pkg, so let's say (optimistically) the price would be $74k with those included. So $31k difference, the CPO seems well worth it to me. Even at the original advertised price of $50k still seems worth it. Plus the CPO price came down from $50k pretty easily while the new didn't seem to be moving much.

All the major BMW models are built on Automated Production Line as most other car brands. Human workers only stand beside as supervisors. Why do you still think cars these days are made by hands?
@tangojulietfoxtrot
@tangojulietfoxtrot 4 ай бұрын
@manofsesame3024 The Honda engine plant in Anna, Ohio, is assembled by people. There are so many people on each line its crazy. They stand nearly shoulder to shoulder with people directly across from them. Some people literally screw in 1 or 2 bolts as the engine(s) pass by. This is solely the assembly line. When you get to the maching/suspension area there is a bit more automation.

Comsumer Reports BMW is 15th on the list for 2022. Where did you find your chart from?
@BeamerView
@BeamerView 5 ай бұрын
They updated the chart since the making up this video. I believe BMW dropped to the 9th position as of late 2023. I can imagine why since they released many new vehicles along with new software, some of which are buggy but should be looking better again the next few years to come. Happy Holidays!

I personally love the X3s after 2022 since that is when they did their mid cycle update. So if you can get a hold of a 2022 version I would go for that one under 40k miles.

It’s not the most reliable. That ratings chart is for predicted reliability. That’s totally different than actual reported reliability. CR told me back in 2007 that my 2002 330i was reliable. This turned out to 100% NOT be the case and yes, the car was perfectly maintained by me and previous owner who had all the maintenance records to prove it.

@@Gogoterps The b58 is the most reliable engine on the market. I dont care about what predicted reliability tells you. It’s built with a diesel block… It’s literally made to handle power. Also it’s nobodies fault but yourd for buying a 330i in the 2000sxzz

The way I see it, if you're willing to drive a BMW knowing how expensive it is, then you might as well not complain no matter how expensive the maintenance cost to them is. For example, if the vehicle costs $95K, you better have another $105K to put into it if you want to keep it past the warranty period. Basically saying, the BMW is great for about 20K miles, after that, good luck!
@DeflectionMode
@DeflectionMode 4 ай бұрын
Even with less than 20K miles on it, my brothers 2022 BMW X5 had to be taken in for service for electrical problems three separate times. If it was not under warranty it probably would have cost him at least another $10K to make these repairs and correct these problems.
@BeamerView
@BeamerView 3 ай бұрын
I can agree with that. BMWs can get a lot of hate for the maintenance but the cost of that in relation to the car is not by much. We're paying for a expensive vehicle which require expensive parts so it only makes sense.

BMWs new design is a drastic change for sure. It does take a while to get use to it. I'm sure they had good practical intentions in mind for it. Many other brands do look more appealing but at the end of the day people, myself included, buy these cars for how they drive and the tech is also great.

You could refer to this - www.edmunds.com/bmw/x3/2023/cost-to-own/ Less miles you drive the better if you plan to own it for that long. I think you'll be fine with a 2023 or 2024 since you'll have a lot left over from warranty, you can also purchase more warranty if needed for the last couple years.
