Mezmerising. I could sit and watch that skill at work all day. Amazing to see (to us mere mortals and however expensive it originally was ) now defect disgarded "junk" being brought back to life in this way. Had a great 17 minutes - thanks!

Awesome job man. I have the same issue with no sound output, with an AVR 235, but none of the fuses are blown. Even so, this video inspires me to try and search for the error and repair it.

It was the capacitor this time, but sometimes an insulator fails at an output transistor. Seen it a few times - causes the same symptom. Good Job!

Have you seen the Marantz SR4000 series inside, its almost the same. Wonder what relation is between HK and Marantz!
@mdzacharias9 жыл бұрын
NSluyter There's a surprising amount of commonality in some receivers - especially the amp sections. A Pioneer VSX-1021 for example has an almost identical amp unit to a Denon AVR-1910. I jokingly say that they "came out of the same hole". Anam is the big Chinese company that makes these.
@NSluyter9 жыл бұрын
Haha, must be a big hole! They probably make >50% of all receivers/amps. Price for a new AV receiver is so low nowdays, for $250eur you have a nice receiver. This must put some pressure on the repair market, such repairs quickly take you 1/2 day or more. Maybe you interested in my fb group facebook.com/groups/1624348004467344

Hey there great video! I have an HK AVR 132. It had been lying for a while & I set it up again today after a long time. I used to use a set of 8 Ohm speakers on it. This time I decided to add another set (which read 7ohms) and connected them in parallel to the stereo out put. I had not tested the amp before connecting the speakers. When I powered it up it played radio for a few seconds before displaying "PROTECT" and switching it back to stand by. I immediately disconnected the speakers and tried again this time it went to "protect straight away without even playing for a few seconds.. I read in the manual that you can reset the device by keeping it in standby and pressing the surround mode button for 5 secs. So I reset the device successfully and tried again but still the same situation. I realize that the resultant impedance from the 2 sets of speakers connected in parallel was around 3.2Ohms(both by calculation and on the multimeter) which is too low and almost a short circuit. Any ideas what I might have blown?
@EcProjects10 жыл бұрын
Naushad Kharas Hey! :) I am not sure but I would start by checking the fuses, then the output transistors (even though a few seconds shouldn't be enough to blow them :/ ) ! Is the AVR 132 rated for 8 ohm speakers ?
@naushad91110 жыл бұрын
EcProjects Unfortunately unlike the AVR130 that you worked on there is no conventional fuse. The back panel has 8ohms written on it. I will check on the transistors. Thanks

I have inherited an AVR700 which seems to have a similar issue, lights but no sound. It's very similar inside so I'm hoping to use your excellent troubleshooting video to diagnose mine. One side note, I did find out that the "Tape Output" was producing audio when connected to a separate amp. The headphones output is dead. It seems like the issue lies after the preamp section. Thanks a lot for your excellent video sir ! Wish me luck, I'll report back.....

Thank you :) Sorry to hear yours have failed too :/ I wouldn't trust those caps any further than I could throw them ! Worth a check indeed. Good luck with the repair!

Yes I had myself quite a surprise as well, I did not expect to find low reliability components in such a unit. There was not a 105c or brand name cap in sight. It does sound pretty good actually. But obviously they don't care about if it's gonna last or not.. -Mads

@EcProjects11 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) That would be hard to tell. But yea, it could easily be an electrolytic. If you have a multimeter, you can try measuring the resistance across the caps to see if they are shorted. But even if the resistance across the cap is 0 it can still be another component on the same rail. Hope you'll find it :)

Hello, did you measure the outputs while the device was turned off and unplugged ? The resistance on the outputs can't tell much normally, because there is capacitors and transistors in the way of the measurement. But if you leave it powered off and unplugged for a little while and measure the terminals, and then as you say only one measures significantly lower, it could indicate a fault in that channel.

Just wanna say great job.. Hopefully one day i'll have the knowledge you do. but for now i have a question (favor) I have a harman kardon avr 247. The problem i'm having is that when i turn the receiver first it works fine. But when it gets warm or hot and i turn it off. and i turn it back on, it wont work, no picture . i have to wait for a long time or the next day to work. Any suggestions??? Thank you..

Hey.. It could sound like a shorted capacitor, they can sometimes come good again after a while, and then fail again when they heat up.. But that's just a guess.. I think your approach is the way to go :) If you can find the schematic you can see if any devices could have failed between the two points you measure :)
@peshmadscientist183318 күн бұрын
Anyone with a 130 that has standby led on but no switch on with button or remote: check for the reset switch shorted. It is on the top of the small rectifier board , left side , attached to the big power transformer. This one was breaking down at about .2v, causing the micro to ignore any other commands. Hope this saves someone a lot of diagnostic time. Might be applicable to similar models. I have also found the .47 ohm resistors on that board burnt due to the .1uf ceramic caps shorted. Also, applicable to similar models.

@EcProjects9 жыл бұрын
+liamlad1 You had me laugh at "Pretty important feature" ;) I would recommend using Isopropyl alcohol and a brush (antistatic if possible), for the electronics at least. Just make sure it has stayed unplugged for a while when you do it..! So there is no charge left in the capacitors. Also check the fuses :)

Hi - great vid , my AVR 507 LE seems to stay in standby, orange light only - could it be a case of replacing these big capacitors also, or should I be looking somewhere else ?
@makkapacca11 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for reply - I already sent a reply but I can't see it anywhere... so I will write it here. I measured both on and off but the SR channel showed a much lower resistance between +ve and GND than all the other channels. After about 2 hours of gentle use, it tripped again and powered off. I re-measured and there was Zero resistance between the +ve terminal - therefore a short I guess. Best thing now is to just trace back from the output and perhaps compare to the SL channel ? thanks

Nice video! Question. I have a Harman Kardon AVR 354 receiver that behaves strangely. Random sound dropouts (lasting for ~1 second) occur in all sound modes, all inputs, with or without any external connections. Strangely, during the sound dropouts the front panel (and volume light/led) black out. During those intermittent and random sound/display dropouts, the power led remains on, and (apparently) all the relays stay on. Between these occurrences, the unit functions "completely" normal. After a while (time varies 10-20 minutes) the sound drops off completely (but the unit stays on, and the front panel working OK), but reappears "normal" once you switch to another input. At other (rare) times, the sound goes completely awry (~whistle). I tried repeated CPU resets, doesn’t change anything. In an attempt to see if anything wrong with the DSP/CPU, I reinstalled the most current firmware (this is done with the unit in standby), and everything went OK. The F110, F111 fuses and wire (jumper) from HDMI board to Regulator board upgrades (as per HK bulletin) have been addressed by the previous owner. I also measured different voltage (regulators), but all seem OK. Of course, the problem is that this issue is intermittent. My question is what connects the sound drop with front display and volume boards concomitant malfunction. I didn’t see anything similar on Internet; have you any idea where to look? I have basic electronic (incl. soldering) skills, if I only knew what needs to be checked/replaced.

Thanks for the tip :D I did actually think of doing that, until I saw the damn prices :O Hehe The 6,8 mF caps are $20 (us) EACH! Here in Denmark :P The 4,7 are "only" $5,5, so I refused to pay the extra 30 ;) We wanted the receiver up and running before Easter, else I would have ordered from the US where its half the price including shipping + import duties O.o -Mads

By the time it started to happen more often, till one day it was gone forever. All audio outputs are dead incl. h-phones, no radio. I tried to reflash the firmware, but during the flashing the audio part, it stuck. Do you think it's repairable? Thank you

EcProjects the repair man told me two transistors and a chip were broken, the costs would be 90 euros. with these kind of things you never know if he is bullshiting you or not. then i ask myself how likely is it that 3 parts break down all at the same time? or am i overreacting?
