As a long time owner of air cooled 911's, including 15+ years with 993's, a few comments. - This car has static cams, no "valve timing" (you prob meant variable timing), and given its a 95, no variable induction either. - I don't understand the comments about the pedals, maybe I have been driving them so long but it's a very natural feeling. If the clutch engagement is high, it means the clutch is getting worn - The visibility is extremely good due to the slender pillars and a windshield that is so close its like wearing glasses. Its better than most of the cars out there - These cars rarely leak from the "top", typical leak points are the valve covers and chain covers, which are not a big deal to correct. Sometimes the leaks are a bit deeper, like the through bolts on the case which is much harder to fix, but its usually just seepage. - As for the gearing, this car must have the North American gearing because of your comment about a long 2nd gear. One of the best changes to the feel of the car is to change the gear sets to Euro or even better - but that is major $$$ so not done lightly. - These cars are very very robust, not sure why you think it would not make it across desert - they are actually both "oil cooled" since they use 12 litres of oil to move heat out from the engine to a radiator and air cooled. Plenty of cooling for any sort of conditions. - And the last point, try to take out a 993 Turbo. I have one, and its the best combination of old school air cooled and power, imagine the ride you took and add 130+ HP and shorter gearing ....

I went for a ride in a 79 930 turbo guards red 420whp (capable of 600hp) decently modded ( no power steering/ brakes. IT WAS GLORIOUS all i can say is it is faster than you think especially with the squat the porshes do it is also straight piped. It feels like hyper space. No matter how many times he hit the gas and i thought i was ready YOU are not ready. best thing ever in my naborhood there is a red 993, the 930, ss chevelle, stock 240 driven by 50ish yr old woman. I still can't belive it its pretty awsome (Thought some people would find this interesting)

I think what impresses me most about this car is just how driver oriented it is. If you take a look at the dash, there's an array, albeit a small one, of utilities within the driver's reach, but the passenger's side and center console has little to nothing at all. Combine that with the door straps and gauge cluster orientation and you have a car that doesn't want you to be relaxed by it. It wants you to focus on driving it and experiencing that "Porsche horsepower" you talked about, David. The 993 is a driver's car all day long. It's meant to be engaging, and I think that's why the enthusiast community loves it so much.

I want to say that the 993 is my favorite gen of 911. It fits right in that sweet spot where its just modern enough but not too modern that you lose that original 911 feel (mainly being the last of the aircooleds).

I've a 1996 993 C2 iris blue metallic. Multi full-concours winner. I just completed the 60,000 mile service and it runs like a Swiss watch. 6 speed manny tranny (G50). I also changed the 0.45 Ohm ballast resistors for the oil cooler and HVAC. (What a pain.) I also changed both lower camshaft cover gaskets coz they were 'sweating' onto the heat exchangers. I've had people pull up beside me, at the lights, offering ca$h in a suitcase! Mine has an LSD and I've found that Mobil 1 75W90 LS turns the gearbox into butter no matter the season (winter/summer).

Thanks David and Ed, great review! The 993 clutch is a little weird... It seems to engage really late. It does take a little getting used to but so totally worth it! The rear suspension is different than the G body cars and it really does tame the rear end a bit. If you are ever in Colorado come drive our 3.2 Carrera and the 993 back to back. Really different experience.
