A lot of credit for tackling such a well known solo. This song was so ubiquitous for so many years that it is indelibly etched, note for note, into the minds of millions....at least over here in the states. There is a video of them doing it at some outdoor British festival around the time of its release. They were pretty amazingly spot on to the studio version live. I think one of them was wearing like a bobby's bowler during the performance. I saw the "survivors" a couple of times, outdoors, in the 90's. They were really tight to the recordings then as well. One of the shows included a backstage, where one of the geeezrs relentlessly hit on my girlfriend, despite being 25 years our senior. They were all pretty hilarious in general though so I didn't mind. The backstage catering was some of the best bbq I ever had. Great job on the lesson!
@SpedSpedding4 ай бұрын
Are we talking about the Knebworth '76 version? I just watched it, and the view from the stage is breathtaking. I also watched the Old Grey Whistle Test version, which was recorded before the first guitar solo was even written-fascinating stuff. I love being able to look back to a time when the song was still a work in progress, with band members swapping around and plenty of work left to do on what would eventually become a massive, iconic rock song.
@keithnorth40323 ай бұрын
@@SpedSpedding not sure that’s entirely correct. Ed King had left the band before the OGWT recording so there were only 2 (not 3) guitarists in the band at that stage. I don’t think the SHA solos were ever played the same live after Ed left as he recorded them in the studio. Gary Rossington here playing the solo on OGWT. Apologies for being pedantic but I’m a huge LS fan.

Great video Sped, love that you are sending some love towards this Ed King Solo from the 2nd Helping Skynrd Album. Ed was part of the secret sauce that made them very special and often underestimated for some reason. The phrasing and touch you are showing playing this are impressive, you really did your homework here. I’ve always been a fan of your Zeppelin stuff having been a lifelong Jimmy Page worshiper ! Keep it up, very nice this stuff, more Skynrd would be good !
@SpedSpedding4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for this! It’s important for both me and the channel to shine a light on various bands, solos, and guitar players. There’s so much incredible music out there, and every player has unique styles, techniques to master, and habits. I don’t want people to think, "This guy teaches Zeppelin well," and that’s it. I’d like to believe I can break down any rock song to the same standard and do a "forensic guitar analysis." The closer I study a song or solo, the more I get from it, and the better I become. If I can share that with all of you and it benefits you too, then that’s priceless.

@@SpedSpedding yea, I respect and appreciate that…I’m just not built like that. I play in a tiki bar band that plays 4 hour gigs, 45 songs…so, I know how to approximate solos even to where most people including guitar players say it is ‘exact’ I just don’t like to dig into every minute detail and inflection that the original player has …for instance- Round and Round by Ratt, because that solo is so iconic I play the double solo parts and it sounds ‘exact’ because I play the notes and ‘intended attitude and feel’ …but solos like Rock You Like a Hurricane by Scorpions, I take a few liberties but keep the same attitude and flair of the original…other solos like ‘Middle Of The Road’ by Pretenders, I totally improvise those two solos each gig…you go DEEP and I appreciate and respect that, even wish I was more built like that…but I spend that time working on my own techniques and chops etc….I don’t like trying to play like someone else
