The reason why Edward didn’t use the stone is because of his own moral convictions. He wanted to avoid using lives and do it his own way. Sure it’s naive af, but it’s his own choice. Sticking by it even if he reduces his own life span is a matter of his own actions having consequences, which he accepts. Thats something to admire from Ed. He accepts all responsibility for his own actions

I can’t understand how could anyone think that Al is having it easy, I can’t even COMPREHEND how horrifying and scary it is to not feel anything at all, you can’t eat you can’t sleep you can’t smell you can’t feel the touch of others, NOTHING AT ALL. And it’s even worse when you realize that he wasn’t born like that, he lost it, so he knows exactly how everything used to feel. (Not to mention his body is a literal bomb waiting to go off)

Rob is confused on how alchemy works. You can essentially trade anything for something of equal value. After using envy’s stone to escape gluttony he learned that he could use his own life to do small things that a philosopher stone is needed for. Not only has Ed never needed to trade his life, he didn’t know he could do it until a few episodes ago.

I think for Al its 2 things in this episode. 1) his armour is rejecting his soul and 2) since Edward used his blood to bind Al's soul, they are connected, so when Ed is dying, Al's bond is weakening as well. Like how Ed is providing the nutrients to keep Al's real body alive.

Ed didn't know that it would work because he doesn't know medical alchemy, like Dr. Marcoh, but it was his best chance. What he was saying is that he knows what it's like to use a soul as a source of power. I get why Rob thinks Al "has it easy", but I don't agree because you have to remember Al hasn't slept or eaten since he was a kid and he's now living with the fear that at any moment his body will reject his soul.

It's made pretty clear that Al's soul itself is losing connection with the physical world. Ed states that he believes because he bound Al's soul to the armor (which cost his arm, so he can't just rebind it to other "bodies") that his body has been partially sustaining Al as well as himself. He sorta plays it off as if "that's why I'm short", but it does actually appear to be that this is the case. The moment Ed is close to death, the closest we've ever seen, is the exact moment Al's soul starts to reject the armor and he loses consciousness. Ed comes to for a brief period, only to use his own life force to heal himself, and Al remains unconscious for a good period of time. Remember that the blood seal binding Al's soul is written in Ed's blood, and Ed sacrificed his arm to perform the seal, so it would make sense that Ed and Al's lifeforces are bound together to some capacity. *Spoilers* We also see that when the brief timeskip to the promise day comes, Ed is notably taller and more physically built, but Al's soul begins to reject the armor more frequently. It seems as though Al's souls' connection to the world being weakened also means that Ed is no longer sustaining Al's soul as much, and he experiences a growth spurt as a result of having more "energy".

Ed knows just how precious and irreplaceable a life is so he isn't so willing to take it. Yes, it's naive, but you can't help but greatly admire Ed for that, especially when he sticks by his beliefs regardless of what happens. It shows how he isn't just all talk, because he acknowledges that his mercy and not willing to kill got him into this mess, and he basically owns up to it and accepts the consequences (i.e. shortening his own lifespan here). Ironically, it was also Ed's act of mercy and not willing to kill that saved him in the end when the Chimeras decided to help him. Fun fact: Hiromu Arakawa, the mangaka, just had her second child while writing the scene with Ed's impalement. She wanted to portray the pain a mother goes through to give life, and this was how she decided to convey it. You can see that at times it looks like an actual childbirth happening lol

The whole "using my own life force" thing is just something Ed came up with on the fly. He just came to the most logical conclusion from his point of view. The reason he never used it before is cause they were never in a situation that needed it, and any other alchemist who does it would have to be familiar with the feeling of using a human soul, like Ed does cause he used the souls in Envy to escape Gluttony's stomach.
