If they were both playing with that free style mentality the defense would suck. You need at least one safety back there playing within the scheme instead of both safeties gambling. I’m just glad I got to see them both play live in my lifetime, greatness is greatness regardless of who they played for. I am a Ravens fan and I liked Ed Reed even better than Ray Lewis so if I had to pick it would be extremely biased. Understanding that I refuse to separate one from the other and will consider them to be the two best safeties to ever play.

Those individuals ignore the fact that Ed Reed is the only player in nfl history with a strip sack td, punt return td, blocked punt return for a td and an interception return for a td. Id say he did it all. This is taking nothing away from Troy. He was awesome. But don't forget ed reed was much more then just a ballhawk. By the way he was the BEST ballhawk.

I'll take the guy who could time the snap count perfectly and then jump over the line and tackle the QB before he could even make a handoff. And not just once either. I can't remember Ed Reed, ever doing anything like that. Or laying out 100%, getting one hand under a ball and actually making the interception. I also don't ever remember watching a game on tv and then seeing a blur come into the screen and blow a back or receiver up, when they weren't even visible on the screen before the shot. Only Troy P could close like that. Reed stayed way back and studied QB's eyes and tendencies to make interceptions, but Troy dominated in pretty much every other part of the game. They are too different to even compare. I would venture to say Troy was not really just a safety, he was "just a football player" in the best sense. He could do it all and be a perfect example of a man on and off the field, a true role model.
@kp-ig9ex4 жыл бұрын
If he could do it all then why couldn't he pick off QBs? You do realize the goats like peyton manning and tom brady feared ed reed right? Ask brady how scary the steelers defense was to him and he would probably laugh and say I dont know but iv dropped alot of points and yardage on them ed could play any position as far as db went cb,ss and fs so no reed didnt always stay back since his first 4 years he played ss and won dpoy, look at the play where ed reed picked off peyton manning which in bill belichick's mind was the best defensive play he has ever seen reed intentionally misread a certain coverage from week one knowing manning would see it weeks to come and when manning saw it during game day reed exposed it..

Hes number one all time in interceptions return yards, number 7 all time in interceptions and could have been much higher if he wasn't constantly injured in the 2nd half of his career. I think he is tied for the most postseason interceptions of all time. He has the longest interception td return only to be break it himself again. I agree with most of what you said but Troy and his splash plays were and are much more entertaining to watch than ed reeds. Let's see ed Reed do a flip over the D line and O line to stuff a QB sneak (more than one occasion btw) and show me a play that takes more athleticism and cerebral awareness of cadence QB snap timing and troys physical timing to start running and jump over that line so perfectly to not be offsides, or touch his own D line and get a penalty for that as well. Those plays are some of the most incredible plays in NFL history. Not to mention his highline real of other jaw dropping athletic plays he's done throughout his career as well. Diving totally laid out and scooping a ball that was literally a quarter inch away from touching the turf and turning that into an interception. The dude was straight up amazing at what he did. And if I juries didn't ruin the second half of his career then who knows what other magic he could have conjured up every Sunday on that football field.

Coming from a Steelers fan there's no wrong answer. These guys played different styles that complimented each other. Troy was a pre-snap mastermind, diagnosing the play and stopping it before it could develop. Then Reed would be there to assist by limiting 1/2 the field the quarterback could throw to. Having fewer options to throw to causing the quarterback to hold it longer, which could then turn in to more sacks by the front 7, or the offense starts running the ball more allowing both Troy and Reed to play up or the quarterback tries to be risky and test Reed, which more often than not results in failure for the QB. When either of these guys played in a game it wasn't a matter if they would make a big play, it was a matter of when they would make it.

They'd pop right in the air and instead of focusing on the tackle ed would focus on leaching off the work the CB already did. I'm not knocking him at all for it. But most of those ints. We're softballs underhanded right into reeds hands and chest. They weren't coverage ints. Like troys were. When troy was healthy he was hands down the best athlete in the NFL. Highly cerebral as well. Both are great but troy can add so much to your defensive scheme and packages that ed can't. based on that alone troy gets the nod. When Co ordinators gameplan against troy they didn't just have to worry about him down field they had to worry about him downfield, on the line, inside, outside lb positions, blitzing, dropping back, playing man or zone etc etc. Ed reed was an opportunistic ballhawk. @Dustin Platt Bro you're right It's their ignorance Troy being a SS is suppose to have more sacks and tackles than Ed, and Ed being FS is suppose to have more INTs and TDs than Troy but TP only has 3 more forced fumbles and 6 more sacks they both have over 530 tackles (tho Troy has 50 more) so it aint like Ed wasn't cracking dudes and was just a cover guy and it wasn't like Troy wasn't getting picks. You defined it the difference was clearly in their positions.

Id take Troy Polamalu over Ed Reed because he was extremely intellectual. It seemed like he knew where every play was going to be. He also had very key moments in very key games. Troy made huge plays in the postseason, Im sure Raven fans know too well. Much respect for Ed Reed though, complete ball hawk.

No no no, Ed was intellectual too. It has been mentioned by all time greats and coaches that the intellect he had for the game was something they’ve never seen. His study habits and ability to know where plays were going were some of the greatest of all time, according to coaches, and players who played with or against him. Ed also had big time plays in big time games. INTS, punt returns, blocked kicks, he could do it all and he’s one of the hardest hitters ever.

Ed reed was amazing but Troy was just a better football player

Jarvis Williams by football player he really means to say that Troy was more versatile as a defender and could fill many roles as a hybrid whereas Ed Reed typically played Free Safety Only. By football player he means that he can line up at more positions and still ball out.

If you must compare, Troy played fewer games and all numbers except INT are higher. Troy was hurt they were a beatable team, when he played Teams had to design plays just to go against him. Not really comparable. TP43 probably the biggest game changer since Mean Joe.

Truth is that of Troy switched and roamed the secondary as much as Ed, he would produce those interceptions and TDs. We all know how unbelievable Tryouts Troy’s hand and instinct was. But Troy ran a legitimate 4.3 and Ed ran a 4.58. Troy was much faster, and well stronger to boot. The truth is Troy could Play the way Ed did, but Ed could not play the way Troy did.

Troy plays like a crazy person and it works but Ed is way smarter can read QBs head before they even made a decision. Ed plays the position way way WAY better than Troy. Troy just played the lottery most plays with timing Ed used his head
@bryanttisdale24462 жыл бұрын
You mean troy had to have Ryan Clark cover for him when he freelance. Ed Reed just had to be right. Not mention Ed Reed had more punt blocks. Also returned a punt return for a touchdown.
@sethers99226 жыл бұрын
Troy is more versatile. If I had to pick one, I want a guy that can do it all. I also would look at the Ravens-Steelers games and Troy was just so much better in those.

Troy by far! we dominated the ravens in the decade we had Troy and I mean dominate them! dominated our division with Troy. Ed Reed was a bad ass no doubt and both class acts. But Troy played his position as safety so different from anyone I'd ever seen. And when he was hurt Pittsburgh struggled hard without him. He dominated the field
@kakkacarrotcake13938 жыл бұрын
you're wayyy outta line now lol..stats says it all...although they both have rings, troy has more iconic moments as with ed he's had some but most of the time he played how you expected him to. he also exceeds expectations

TROY tops ED except interceptions with 16 GAME'S LESS... teams need 2 safety's FREE And STRONG they were the VERY BEST OF BOTH POSITIONS!!

Troy played all kinds of coverage. Nickel and dime. His rookie season. What did Reed do his rookie season? Troy wasn't the same as Reed. One played free. The other played strong safety. Troy played at the line more then Ed did. That's why Ed had more pick offs. For TDS. Troy had more sacks and more tackle for lost.

Ed’s prob greatest cover safety ever but polamalu just does so much for a team. If you were building a defense from scratch, polamalu>reed.

Ed Reed led in all but tackles, about 30 less and sacks with 5 less yet Reed had double the ints, 2 or 3 maybe 4x the int return yards. If you know football, you know Ed is the best to ever play the position.People saying Troy are basically saying they would take the 5 extra sacks and 30 extra tackles instead of Reeds 32 more ints and Reeds 1640 int return yards. 🤣🤡🤡🤡
