As much as I enjoy these two, I must say that it has NOTHING on the original. Shane McGowan's drunken growl is utterly perfect for this song, and Kirsty MacColl has both the grit and the pipes to sell the story of two addicts in a love-hate relationship. This is not a song that is suited to such delicate voices. It's a song about finding joy amidst life's suffering, and Shane and Kirsty make you feel it.

@@dimebagdarrell2390 The wrongness of your comment hurts. I agree that this doesn’t really sound like the original and that it sounds sweet even though it should sound rough. They did a cover, usually these types of covers aren’t planned and are decided on while the performers are there. If someone randomly told you to sing the song in a presentable way and you basically had no time to prepare would you have been able to perfect the almost dead drunk voice? Also I’m pretty sure they were supposed to make it okay for kids to hear so they tried to make it sound more kid friendly(?). If you think there’s no emotion in music you’ve probably only heard one song, because while some songs might seem to be about nothing, there are so many great ones (ones not popular and ones that top the charts) that you can really feel the emotions trying to be conveyed. If you think there’s no emotion in music why don’t you go and make music and sing for these people?

At least these two sing in tune! The reason people like the original is because of the nostalgia attached to it, and it's pretty unreasonable to expect a cover to evoke the same feelings.

They both are awesome, but as everybody already said, nobody can beat McCall and McGowen‘s Voices in this song. But I love Ed‘s Christmas Sweater! This is the Way!

Lyrics It was christmas eve babe In the drunk tank An old man said to me: won't see another one And then they sang a song The rare old mountain dew I turned my face away and dreamed about you Got on a lucky one Came in eighteen to one I've got a feeling This year's for me and you So happy christmas I love you baby I can see a better time Where all our dreams come true. They got cars big as bars They got rivers of gold But the wind goes right through you It's no place for the old When you first took my hand on a cold christmas eve You promised me broadway was waiting for me You were handsome you were pretty Queen of new york city when the band finished playing they yelled out for more Sinatra was swinging all the drunks they were singing We kissed on a corner Then danced through the night. And the boys from the nypd choir were singing Galway Bay And the bells were ringing out for christmas day. You're a bum you're a punk You're an old s*** on junk Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed You scumbag you maggot You cheap lousy faggot Happy christmas your arse I pray god it's our last. And the boys of the nypd choir's still singing Galway Bay And the bells were ringing out For christmas day. I could have been someone Well so could anyone You took my dreams from me When I first found you I kept them with me babe I put them with my own Can't make it out alone I've built my dreams around you And the boys of the nypd choir's still singing Galway Bay And the bells are ringing out For christmas day.

Well I for one really enjoyed this. It's lovely ♡ A cover isn't supposed to copy the original but find their own style, and they did that. Just like how you have metal covers of classical music and can appreciate the result of that, I wish more people would just enjoy that this is a sweet, cute version of a traditionally more...rambunctious song and be done with that instead of the knee-jerk reaction of BUT IT'S NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGINAL!! You can both love the original *and* appreciate how different a cover is, you know? :)
@equigs Жыл бұрын
There's putting your own stamp on a song and there's murdering a song. This is the latter. Why in earth would you do a "cute" version of a song that isn't "cute". It's patently obvious how fairytale of New York went straight over their heads. If you're going to do it, do it right. Take Sid Vicious doing "my way". That version, he made his own AND it worked perfectly. What they did was tweee. I thought he was better than that.

From Shane: "The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character. She is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate. Her dialogue is as accurate as I could make it but she is not intended to offend! She is just supposed to be an authentic character and not all characters in songs and stories are angels or even decent and respectable, sometimes characters in songs and stories have to be evil or nasty to tell the story effectively. If people don't understand that I was trying to accurately portray the character as authentically as possible, then I am absolutely fine with them bleeping the word, but I don't want to get into an argument."

What a beautiful tribute. So many comments wail about the sacrilege that this version represents. If anything recreating the "original" grit sounds artificial to me, most of the time. So often this song is sung with a pretentious coolness that is the opposite of the depth of the original composition. The roughness of the original cannot be faked. The truth, on the other hand, lies in the deep closeness of the hearts of the two protagonists. And these two convey that in their own wonderful way.

Nine_nunb yeah it’s super different and I can see why you’d say it’s disrespectful to the original but I mean unlike most of the people in this comment section I didn’t grow up with this song so it didn’t hold as much significance to me personally anyway It’s more enjoyable if you look at em as two different songs though cause they both have a lot to offer and do their own things on each and I appreciate the effort that went into it more than anything else

totally agree with all the comments below about how the original can't be beaten and is a complete classic but this isn't a bad cover. Ed is so talented you give him a loop pedal and a guitar and he can entertain a stadium on his own-I do also get the impression he sometimes tries to not overshadow people he duets with or covers. He does have some mad talent (which I doubt people are disputing also).
