At 66 years old. I have sung this song far more than I wish I had. You never know when that parting glass will be the last one with those friends.

"The Parting Glass" is a Scottish and Irish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was allegedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". Wikipedia

This song has always been very special to me. I can't describe the intense calming effect it has over me. This song is what I would think true peace sounds like. The fact that the music is so simple, and the humming lightly resonates in your ears, just makes this song even more powerful. In my opinion, this is Ed's best work.

There are so many other traditional Celtics songs that do the same as this one. If you haven't already, you should check them out! Celtics music and lyrics are so hauntingly beautiful. Tis The Last Rose of Summer is one of my favorites: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWixaGSGnLKEqpI Carrickfergus is another one. The Charlotte Church version is very good. Here's the link: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4e6gWSfibGYnKs The Water Is Wide (There Is A Ship) is beautiful and Charlotte did it justice as well: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4fdn5-qftKroZI You can find all of these done by different artists if you don't care for Charlotte Church. I hope you enjoy! 😊❤️

Verse 1] Of all the money that e'er I had I spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I've done Alas it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all [Verse 2] Of all the comrades that e'er I had They are sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They would wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and I'll softly call Good night and joy be with you all [Verse 3] A man may drink and not be drunk A man may fight and not be slain A man may court a pretty girl And perhaps be welcomed back again But since it has so ought to be By a time to rise and a time to fall Come fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Good night and joy be with you all

One of the beauties of folk songs (and to an extent any songs) is that they can be open to so many interpretations, and arrangements, and mean so many different things to different people. The non-specific words in this song are a case in point....(who is going? Why? Temporarily or permanently? On a journey or to death? We don't know!) I love the melancholy in this rendition but that doesn't mean someone else is wrong to do it more cheerily! Ed Sheeran's voice is awesome and I'm sure it will mature still further with the years, like a good wine :-)

I lost my cousin a few months ago and before that i had never heard this song. This was played at his funeral and that's when I broke down. Since then I listen to it constantly to feel more connected to him. I miss you sean

Why isn’t this on streaming services anymore? I remember listening to this back in the day and now I can’t find it on Spotify or any streaming platform? Only live versions? Weird

Wow, Ed sheeran, was not a musician I would have thought I’d like to listen to, but I really like he kept one of these traditional songs going!

Ed has a lot of Irish in him. He said it himself on the concert in Dublin. This is the best version of The Parting Glass.

i was introduced to this because a well known composer named Micheal Sweeney used part of this song to be a tribute to my band director who died in car accident. i cried the first time i played this in band. MEMORIES MAN!!!!

I don't even remember where I first heard or learnt of this song, it just feels like I've always known it. It just speaks to me so differently, and what's weird is I don't associate the song with any memory or phase in my life; this song enables me to blank my mind. I don't think of anything and I feel truly at peace. It takes me away from everything in the world, and it's true bliss.

it's an old Irish folk song that was sung at the end of gatherings... lmfao

thats how the song might have started but it was indeed sung for sailors and at funerals

This is so beautiful. No words adequate for the deep spirituality in this lovely song.

"And all the harm I've ever done, alas it was to none but me." I feel like this line gets overlooked too often when it's one of the most important verses of the song. The whole thing is an ode to memory, and hindsight truly highlights every shitty thing we've done.
