Same episode that The Supremes did their final performance with Diana Ross. That twice that Petula Clark and the Supremes were on the same episode of Ed Sullivan as they were both performers on the October 10, 1965 episode. Additionally, the Supremes sang with Clark on the Rogers and Hart special from 1967 (not Ed Sullivan). They crossed paths several times during the 1960's.

The way I'd heard it, she'd been in Québec, Canada, but had to go back to France for a charity show and then fly straight back to New York for this show. She must have been exhausted... and the band played Downtown at the wrong tempo!

She was a child star in England, working on stage, she did 500 live BBC radio shows during the war, she toured England with Julie Andrews as children, she had multiple film roles, stage musicals and she sang across Europe in 5 languages. She’d been a recording artist for 16 years before she unexpectedly broke America. She was no doubt used to just having to get out there and do it!

The Ed Sullivan Show had a full rehearsal on Sunday afternoon at 1 PM. Petula arrived just in time for the Full Rehearsal without having time to rehearse on her own. Listen to the time frame Ed gives at the beginning.

Dusty Springfield & Sandi Shaw were better...Petula is a bit too "squeaky clean" for my liking. I prefer Soul. Good tune though.

Petula has plenty of soul if you listen to her covers of Every little bit hurts and Tears of a clown ,Petula can and has sung all genres of music in a near 80 year career and was still doing one woman concerts as late as 2019.Pure class .

Dusty was certainly more soulful. However, Petula had such versatility she was able to move on from 60s pop to Vegas headliner, tv specials, movies, Broadway and the West End.

There is NOTHING wrong what so ever with squeaky clean. Squeaky clean is BRILLIANT. And so is Petula Clark. Disagree with you totally as I believe that Petula Clark was by far and away superior to Dusty and Sandi Yes of course Dusty and Sandi were really good singers of that there is no doubt whatsoever. However look who had the biggest selling hits, who was constantly on the top British and American shows. Who starred in the hit musicals and movies. Who still as her career to this very day. Clue:it isn't Dusty or Sandi.
