It's so weird to look back on our parents in those intimate lonely moments they had. My mom was a piece of work, she was so flipping selfish, but it was those kinds of moments when she thought we were in bed...that I saw who she was, and then I didn't take her stuff so personally. I can remember being in my car seat, just a tiny kid, and singing "If you could read my mind" by Lightfoot to the back of her seat...and I somehow realized I was already a few years older than she was, and the only way out was that song. "And if you read between the lines you'll know that I'm just trying to understand...the feeling, that you lack".
