I'm a volunteer firefighter. I know what zero vis means. I know what it means navigating an unknown environment without seeing anything. It's putting a lot of stress on us. When Edd mentioned "the 2 guys", I went 😂😂😂 immediately because I remember that story. Also huge respect for (a) Edd's effort to keep the victim's body intact and (b) the "I'll take a hero welcome when I bring out someone alive. This is just a job." comment.

I dove Wacissa on Day 2 to remove the Victim's remaining gear (fins) & pull the reel. That was a rough one for my friends who did their best. I got Edd's narrative in person around the fire pit one night many weeks later. That recovery was one of the most brutal and tight ones until this. I also dove for Ben McDaniels on night one, and supported Edd's dive for Larry Lee Higginbotham by rushing my Sidemount 95's full of Trimix to the site & dropping them with Stacy. I'm honored to have been taught Full Cave by Edd, and to have helped on a few cave recovery dives. Even more amazed by his Live Cave Rescues. When humans like Edd exist in our lifetime, there's no need for Superhero fantasy films.

Edd, the way you describe your methods and especially creating things out of necessity remind me of my father. He was a mine rescue specialist. He innovated a lot of tools and methods to find problems with the Breathing Apparatus rebreather and fix them under pressure as fast as possible. He won so many safety contest trophies he was legendary among his peers, but i was too young to understand at the time before he passed. Your demeanor and style bring back a lot of memories.

That had to be a fun but sketchy dive. A mask with an integrated system like an older one but update would be nice. Printed in both upper portion of the lenses. Small but visable 2 line info layout. Has to be just the text visible though so not to take away any field of vision. Then create a wiring sytem that splits off from the battery bank. I could go on with inventions. Just no time or funding to back it and establish the prototypes. Glad Sorenson, Young and the DM government found the bodies in a safe and reasonable time frame. Congrates and props. 🤙🏼. To the interviewer, greatly appreciated for your efforts to discuss all this in somewhat detail. I am with Mike Young and will say there was a divine something that happened. Not just with Young but with everyone in the water during both rescues, even the victims. Anyway. Great video.

Edds mental ability to block out things so many would find terrifying amazes me. I truly think it is his greatest asset in this profession. I am a Scuba Instructor with thousands of dives, in many parts of the world. I have made many cavern dives in N FL. ( where you can see the glow of dayligh). In some of the caverns, when it turns into cave, there is a gate with a sign. It you are not CAVE certified, it you go beyond this point……..YOU WILL DIE. Thought hard about getting cave trained/certified. The answer was no. Not willing to invest the time, and money into it. It is a major commitment. You also clearly leave the world of recreational diving and enter the world of TECH diving. You also commit yourself to a clearly higher level of risk. No question. I fully respect cave divers, but not for me. And despite my experience and professional level of training, I wouldn’t even think of entering a cave without the extensive and specialized training.

Took me a while to watch this. I had to stop a few times. I suppose it’s easier for you since you know what you are doing, but I was feeling all the panic-inducing part. Sometimes when you are in a mess yourself, and you think it’s going to be irreversible, you get detached, you are observing yourself in slow motion, but here, without pumping it up, you conveyed that situation where some move could put you beyond recovery. Cutting that line was one example. (Guess you really count on manufacturers for good quality 1/8 line)

I'm surprised that Edd, with all his ingenuity, doesn't carry a pneumothorax needle on recoveries. I fully understand not wanting to disturb the bodies, but sometimes you do what you have to and placing a chest tube to vent the decomp gas in the chest/abdominal cavities seems like it would have made this job much easier. Incredible job getting it done either way though.

Bodies are not that important. They aren’t in them anymore. It’s like risking your life for a car that’s been totaled. I don’t understand how you get closer from that.

Leaving bodies in caves contaminates the cave, and nobody wants to be exploring a cave and run into a body. Plus families deserve closure.

I really hope I’m not the only grown man that got audibly giddy when he found out there was another Ed Sorenson story on KZbin?!🤓

I believe it was divine intervention which had Edd co2 out and Mike see the ring RIGHT when they did. I'm very, very glad Edd didn't overwork his rebreather to the point that he got hurt. That must've been scary. But, Edd followed his protocol perfectly and didn't panic and let his machine catch up. He's quite wise. Such an amazing person, man. SUCH an amazing person...

We really need to make a communication device thatll work for rescue divers like Edd.

There such devices, but they require a diver use a full face mask, which are dangerous for various reasons and not used in cave diving.

@@thatoneguy7047 I was thinking maybe a microphone in the rebreather with some sort of push to talk function. So like you couldnt have a conversation easily but you should be able to get the point across.

ofcourse the officials as per usual, fail at something, and just wanna disregard anyone else being able to do it and wanna quickly bury the situation and move on. classic.
