It was my first car in 73 High School... it was my parent's car and was given to me when I got my license... it was the family car ... and I beat the hell out of that motor and it never quit .. it had dual factory carbs... I also installed an 8track player in the glove compartment and 2 round 2way speakers on the back deck under the window with was perfectly angled for speakers

People rebuild their SUs when they don't have to. They can't get the car to run right. The Carb's won't sync. They can't control the mixture. Before you do anything eliminate all your vacuum leaks. Put in a Petronics electronic ignition. Replace the diaphragms in the carburetors- that's a cross drive not a Phillips head screwdriver. Put some 30 weight in the dampeners-3/8". Add an aluminum heat shield and insulators between the carburetors and intake manifold. Static time the vehicle. Now you're ready to sync your carburetors and adjust the mixture. Sometimes you need rebuilding, sometimes you need to brush the throttle shafts. But for the most part they run pretty good for a long time. Same with Strombergs.

You should get the HIF model of the SU Carburetor instead. They are a lot better and keep the set fuel mixture a lot better. I put two on my Volvo 120 when I had one. And you don't really need anything more than a hose to tune the idle setting - use it as a stethoscope to listen to the intake on each side. Another way of tuning the mixture is also to lift the piston on a carburetor all the way up and adjust the opposite carburetor. But it's up to the person doing the adjustment. You can also get tuning parts for the engine at klracing.se among other places. Notice that some B18 with SU carburetors had an A-cam and some had a D-cam. The former is a pretty dull and boring cam, the D-cam has more power without being senseless like the R-cam.

Great content, because this is the number one problem people have with the B18 and B20.
@GAIS414
@GAIS414 6 жыл бұрын
That says a lot, as most B18's and B20's came with a single carb. Definitely one of the best engines ever made as far as quality goes. As long as you have oil, gas and water in them they will run forever. Americans tend to stand by their small block V8's which are also great engines. But I've had both small blocks, B18's, B20's as well as B30's and I would choose a Volvo engine over any small block any day of the week. =)
@willriley1619

I live five kilometers (3 miles) from the Volvoplant in Gothenburg Sweden. And because of the extreme quality they aren't very hard to find around here. Most often they outlived the body of the cars. I hope one day you'll get your hands on a nice Volvo 164. In my opinion the best car ever produced in Sweden. They are an absolute joy to work on.
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 5 жыл бұрын
I heard that later B18 and B20 engines eventually got early forms of fuel injection because of the problems found in multi carb engines. However, I have heard that mechanical fuel injection was also problematic.
@GAIS414
@GAIS414 5 жыл бұрын
@@skylinefever If I'm not misstaken the B20 and the B30 had fuel injection as an option from 1969 and up to 1975 these engines were called B20/30E and B20/30F. The F models were designed to run on low octane unleaded fuel with a catalytic converter mainly produced for the American market. Volvo tried out both electronic as well as mechanical fuel injection during these years. The electronic type was the most common.

Well done! But in Austria we dont use SU Carbs, they are troublemakers. We install modern Injections and increase power at low gas consumtion. Same thing with Girling brakes; we exchange to ATE and all problems are gone...
@harrygatto
@harrygatto 6 жыл бұрын
So, you are speaking for everyone in Austria? I am sure that there are many in Austria who value originality. There is a well-known British car restorer in Austria (both interpretations are correct) who to the best of my knowledge has never fitted FI systems or ATE brakes.
