I appreciate them and enjoy interacting with people who understand music, the technologies required for great audio and video, and who comprehend how astonishing a singer Sohyang is. With regards to Sohyang's rendition of "I'll Never Love Again," I was about as shocked by how great it is as I was at "I Have Nothing" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It is that level of stunning. Dynamics in vocals like only Sohyang seems able to achieve without going hoarse, and absolute beauty of tone. I have never even heard Lady Gaga's version, so I can't comment on that, but what Sohyang has done with it is basically stupefying in wringing the emotions and passion from the lyrics. I am so glad to be alive to enjoy this once in a lifetime singer. 😮😉😎💖💖💖

I really appreciate it. I bet there's no one in the world today who can perform this song with this arrangement and this technique except Sohyang. Even she might find it challenging to perform now lol. The song has too many technical barriers, such as chesty mixed and head voices up to super high notes, seamless register changes, strong and long breath control, and extreme contrast in piano/pianissimo falsetto singing. I believe no singer, whether classical or popular, can recreate this song. They can only achieve parts of it respectively.

I really enjoy your reactions, guys! Topnotch! She is my favorite singer, too. You will really love her busking in Spain. Besides 'Angel' that you have already reacted to, there is 'I'll Never Love Again' (Lady Gaga cover). 'Love Wins All' (Korean Song, IU cover), 'I Am' (Korean Song), 'Love On Top' (Beyonce cover) and more. Gents, I applaud for another magnificent reaction to Sohyang's modernized "Arirang Alone'. Her magic here can make a non-Korean feel the Korean pride with this performance. Kudos for the observation that Sohyang practices her number numerous times prior to taking the stage. Her dedication to her craft is the key to the pristine delivery of her performances. And the comment about Sohyang's aging backwards...it sure seems that way, doesn't it? The enigmatic power of Sohyang mystifies us commoners 🙂

이곡의 원곡은 1990년 한국의 가수 서유석이 부른 "홀로 아리랑"입니다. kzbin.info/www/bejne/marHZot_qqejidE 한돌이라는 작곡가가 전통 민요인 아리랑(araring)을 모티브로 하여 만든 노래입니다. 가사중 ‘손잡고 가보자 같이 가보자’, ‘우리는 언제쯤 하나가 될까’라는 가사가 남북통일을 의미합니다. 아리랑(araring)의 뜻을 많이 궁금해하시는데요. 아리랑의 ‘아리(ari)’는 ‘아름답다, 곱다’ 등의 뜻을 가진 옛말이고 ‘랑(rang)’은 ‘님(사랑하는 사람)’을 가리키는 말입니다. 즉, ‘아리랑’은 ‘고운 님’이라는 뜻을 갖고 있으며 ‘아라리요’는 ‘가슴이 아리다’를 뜻을 갖고 있습니다.

Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 46 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 46! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷‍♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches by the boat load are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. Thank you for your reaction to Sohyang's Arirang Alone. Arirang is the most famous Korean folk song. However, Arirang Alone is not. It is actually quite modern song written in 1989, but in Korean 60s and 70s style. Musically, it's nothing like Arirang and Arirang musical theme is not in the original song. The original Arirang Alone borrowed the meaning of the word Arirang and wrote in hope of the unification of Korea. Sohyang's rearrangement of Arirang Alone made the song complete by musically as well. She expressed the difference of North Korea and South Korea with the dissonance when the violins go crazy, but when she sings "become one," the music changes to unison and made the song more bright. Then she added the original folk song Arirang to her version when she encourages and people sing along, expressing unified Korea without the difference, by using Arirang which both North and South Koreans know. She also not only added traditional instruments, but also traditional rhythms incorporated with the Western instruments like violins. If you analyze her arrangement of the song, it has many layers and she brought them together and harmonizes. Then, she made the song perfect with her ability to sing the arrangement. It's quite amazing and acoomplishment.
