On Dec. 14, 2019, TCM showed "Criss Cross" (1949) as its selection for its weekly "Noir Alley" show (Saturday night at midnight ET, repeating Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. ET). Here is the intro by host Eddie Muller, aka The Czar of Noir.

Worthwhile. The film should be better known. The early death of Hellinger was a tragedy, but the film actually benefits from Siodmak having a freer hand.

Eddie Mullier is the greatest. I hate to disagree with him. But Criss Cross is not that great. As great as Double Idemnity or The Killers? Forget it.

… CRISS CROSS is that great. It’s a period piece showing LA as it was in its prime. It’s a small movie but it sure made an impression on me 30 years ago when I first saw it. Thank you TCM. This is the rare time that I agree with Eddie Mueller. It doesn’t have the slick soap opera of The Killers and the dropdead beauty of Ava Gardner, but Burt Lancaster, Yvonne deCarlo, and Dan Duryea make up a cast that I would watch again and again. Yvonne Carlo in the beginning dancing with Tony Curtis. Wow! Ava Gardner could not do that. Really! … Edmond O’Brien (insurance man in The Killers)? No. And I love the speech Yvonne deCarlo gives at the end. And the finale tableau of deCarlo lying across Bert Lancaster. Wow!

I think it's better than average but it isn't absolutely riveting. I think The Killers is superior, the 1946 film.

I think it and The Killers are both better than Double Indemnity, and this is WAY better than The Killers. It took me a few viewings to really appreciate just how great this movie is.
