Interesting comment. Around that time, 1990 to 1994, alternative rock was having a resurgence. It was based on old metal, blues rock, and punk fused together. It was the alternative to R.E.M. and U2. Eighties music, which I have to suffer through at the mall I work at, was very synthethiser-oriented and preprogrammed. There was no ingenuity at all. I think what Vedder was getting at was the pressure of having to be a superstar and spokesperson for the disenfranchised. He was an introvert who wrote music and lyrics for himself. He was not up to being leader of a generation on MTV. Around that time, Cobain decided to kill himself. They were at the same level. INXS, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, U2, etc. all had ten years to adjust to fame. Pearl Jam had zero years. Nirvana had two years. It is understandable they felt this way.

Vedder was a lot smarter than he was given credit for. I suspect that his difficult life and subsequent leaving home and having to fend for himself on his own caused him to develop a certain responsibility. Unfortunately, I have found him less articulate than usual in his interviews over the last few years, though I do not know why.

The context wasn't about bugs he's not mean to animals. That was a metaphor he was using and what he did when he was a child which is also normal. Take me for example I'm am animal and bug lover. I used to be really sensitive because I tried to make friends with nature when I was a kid and I'd often end up eating ants that I tried to pet cause they bit me. I was just a kid that didn't know any better.

I hate people like Vedder or Cobain that used to talk shit about 80's bands and their lyrics. I mean, everyone should be free to write and sing what he wants, who are you to say what it's wrong or right? Poison talked about parties and girls, Slayer talked about war and nazists, Pearl Jam talked about their things... Who is wrong? Nobody, to me. There's space for everyone. Vedder and Cobain were not respectful of the bands that came before them.

That's not true. Eddie has always loved The Who, Neil Young, The Ramones and plenty of classic rock bands and singers.
