Rachel Bailie that makes you a shallow person ! See , they don't make movies about people like you, and others who think like you ! His parents, in the end ' got' why their son had to go on this journey , you apparently still do not ! They fully and completely supported the book, and later the movie. Setting aside, having their own mistakes as parents ( as humans) aside, in the desire to have Sean Penn, tell the story , the real story, about them, and their relationship with their son. What you just said here ? Would hurt them so deeply! There are always people who abhors what they don't understand, and would never attempt to learn, only judge. Would I have ever done what he did ? No! I do not have the courage, to venture out and chance surviving , fending for myself. I'm too scared, and like my creature comforts too much. But without people like Chris, I wouldn't be sitting where I'm sitting, and neither would you ! The great explorers and pioneers had to risk it all, to search for a dream. Many many died, but we are able to even know about this amazing planet , due to people having a need to follow a dream. You need to listen to Sean Penn, tell his experience in making this movie and getting to know the family etc They would most certainly ' abhore' what you expressed here.
