in todays world of railways, the this type of electrodynamic braking is not used, instead, the traction motors are converted into generators and the train comes to stop, then either this power is decapitated in brake resistors or sent back to catenary

This would work if the train has multiple electrical motors distributed along the bogies (automotor). If only the locomotive is individual, it would not have enough braking power to stop the train.

Currection : Relatiive motion of magnetic field produces electric field and E produces induced emf and then current.
@staysci-curious
@staysci-curious 16 күн бұрын
Hi Harshit. Yeah, it is true that for current, EMF should be induced. But it was not exclusively mentioned in the video, as we were trying to understand the process. Thanks for your comments.

Hi , I have a question. Due to they eddy current proudced there is high heat generation. Even if the conducting disc slow down, how do we tackle to cool down the entire system. IRL do we have a cooling mechanism
@staysci-curious
@staysci-curious 16 күн бұрын
Hi Yash, they don't have exclusive cooling system. Mostly they are air cooled as brakes are not going to be used continuously for long durations, only when needed they will be used for short duration.

George Westinghouse invented air brakes 1800s friction safety first. This would replace such no wearing parts. Except if current is lost no brakes where as on air brakes if air is lost brakes come on automatically.

How hot do the disc get with the Eddy Current?
@staysci-curious
@staysci-curious 16 күн бұрын
Hi, the disc does get hotter, when brakes are applied. But it will be for a short duration and the temperature will not be high enough to cause any damage to the disc. Thanks for your comment.
