I got on the train to Boston this morning wondering what I would listen to and this gem showed up in my notifications. I hope the rest of my day goes as well :-)

Unusual mellow sound of banjo, almost like guitar (of Freddie Green) or tenor guitar of Eddie Condon

I agree. He was known to play with a violin mute. At 10:25 you can see him reach into his pocket and put it on!

My gosh... it's so beautiful it almost makes me queasy. In a good way, but I actually have to pause to process between songs. I can't imagine how it must have been live. I don't know if I could handle it. I hope to one day attend, that's for damn sure! Thanks so much for sharing this. It's made my day. It's incredible just how much a Tenor Banjoist and a Pianist can do. I wonder if you could do John Coletrane's "Both Directions" convincingly. I believe coltrane plays a tenor sax which should be in Bb if I remember correctly which is just a half step lower than Tenor's C string. Maybe throw a bass in the mix and you could do it convincingly. That album has a few bowed bass solos which were quite wicked.
