Edgardo Cambon, Conga Lessons, "Caballo" Rhythm.

Dear viewers this is not a produced instructional video, but just a video I did for some of my students of a group class that had learned this rhythm, from me.
"Caballo" or sometimes referred as "A Caballo" is derived from the Martillo Rhythm on Bongó, as an adaptation to the congas, and further developed. Used in Jíbaro Music (PR, see: "Seis Chorreao sample here: • Video by the great Giovanni Hidalgo) and heard sometimes on Cuban música campesina, as well as in Cumbia (non traditionally played) and as an accompanying rhythm to compliment the Tambora in Dominican Merengue rhythm. Couldn't one do the two Open tones on the "one and" with left-right instead of right-left (right=dominant hand)? This would give me more time to get the left in front for this "pre-slap" (or base). It would also create more of a hand-to-hand feel, as the last note of the first bar was an open on the low drum with the right. So it's right - left-right - left instead of right - right-left - left, which seems to make coordination easier for me. Just my thoughts. Thank you very much for this and all the other tutorial videos on latin percussion. I have yet to find somebody who can mach your thorough and detailed, but also motivating teaching style, especially with the tutorials you did for Dance Papi. Just great, muchas gracias!

Mat, All those options are possible and optional to the player. I prefer the first of the two opens on the conga (second bar or 4/4 count) played with the Right hand, because that keeps the right hand with all the down beats on counts 1 and 3 of each bar of the rhythm played with the Right Hand. Start with a good pair of wooden Matadors by LP, even second hand ones. 11,75' Conga and 12,5' Tumbadora...There are many drums to chose from, and many makers, fiberglass, wood, etc etc. I suggest beginners to start with a second hand drum in good shape, and not to spend too much money at first. Size is important , so as an adult you should not as a first drum go any smaller than 11' Quinto. Feel free to email me what you find before you buy it at : [e-mail] Good luck!

Licenciado en Sentido Común , en la Salsa, este ritmo se usa solamente cuando el arreglo lo indica, o sea el “Caballo” se aplica en secciones donde normalmente la música, la melodía, el bajo, etc, cambian, y “a gusto del conguero” o por decision del arreglista. En pocas palabras: el “Caballo” no es aplicado en ninguna sección específica. Gracias por mirar el video. Pa’lante conguero!

Hola Elkin, La relación esta en el ritmo mismo del bongó comparado con el patrón "Martillo" en la conga, en ambos hay sonidos más agudos en el macho en la cuenta 1 y 3 del ritmo, y un sonido abierto (open tone) en la hembra en la cuenta 4. El ritmo "Caballo" es de alguna manera una extensión del Martillo. Obviamente no estamos tocando la Conga con los dedos como en la técnica del Bongó, pero de todos modos: Esta todo relacionado. One other suggestion if you don't mind. Sometimes your microphone is a bit low and i need to bring the computer close to my ear to listen but at the same time, do to being a visual learner, need to see whats going. lol And lastly. Please don't accept my comments as a negative as there are so many great things you show us. It would be ideal to see the camera view from the top side angle. Reason I say this is I'm having to turn the computer upside down to see the hand positions and patterns better. Maybe its just me. I appreciate you. Stay safe. J

Edgardo tengo una tremenda confusión o dilema, quisiera que me argumentaras de verdad. Mira , muchos hablan de la importancia de tocar con la conga 11 3/4" y la tumbadora 12 1/2" por el "mejor" sonido o que muchos tocan con el quinto al medio porque compraron el set de quinto, conga , Tumba pero, por ejemplo, aquí veo que tocas con un quinto (con afinación intermedia de conga) y suena muy bien y sonoro. Explícame por favor por qué tocar con conga si a mi gusto el quinto suena igual.(?)

Puro Ritmo, mi humilde respuesta y otros podrán estar en desacuerdo, es que es todo un asunto de afinación y propósito, me explico: si vas a tocar en una Banda de Salsa, con metales (horns) etc, o sea una banda grande, te conviene tener una afinación y un sonido más "gordo" para aguantar mejor el ritmo para esa banda. En ese caso el elegir la conga y tumba puede resultar mejor. En este video yo estoy simplemente demostrando un ritmo a estudiantes y utilicé las congas que tenía a mano sin gran preocupación. Yo grabé mi tercer CD ("Celebrando 20 Años") con mi banda con un Quinto LP Classic y una Tumba, con parches de cuero y una afinación en el Quinto mas baja. Muchos estudiantes prefieren tocar con un Quinto como "macho' o sea el tambor principal que colocás frente a ti, pero cometen el error de afinarlo muy alto porque les facilita la ejecución y el "corte" del "Slap" Tapa'o o galleta. En una banda de Salsa, a mi criterio eso es un error porque terminas con un sonido de Tumbao o "marcha" muy agudo y fuera de contexto. Al mismo tiempo si estas tocando con una banda de funk, Rock and Blues, o musica pop o reggae, donde le bajo y la batería serán el mayor sustento sonoro de la sección rítmica, podes afinar mucho más alto y usar lo que quieras, (Quinto, etc). En resúmen: no podes pedirle a un Quinto que suene como una Tumba (aunque lo bajes de afinación) ni a una Tumba que suene como un Quinto... También depende de el tamaño de tus manos: algunos de mis estudiantes tienen manos muy grandes y quieren empezar a tocar con un Quinto, si bien es mejor empezar con algo que NO empezar, si apenas te entran las dos manos en el tambor, se dificulta la ejecución de muchos ritmos. Si tu ves las fotos de Tataguines (RIP) en los discos de las Descargas de Cachao, notarás que las congas no eran tan diferentes el macho de la Tumba... Las dimenciones tambien han cambiado un poco con el correr del tiempo, en parte por razones comerciales donde las companías en intento de vender más (nada malo con eso) empiezan con "inventos" una super Tumba the 13.5 , un requinto de 10', si bien esos tambores (como todos los tambores) tienen su uso y son divertidos para tocar y experimentar, te aseguro que nadie me a verá llegando a un show cargando ni yo ni mi asistente una Tumba de 13,5 pulgadas. Ahora si, cerrando esta charla: Busca tu sonido, tu preferencia, se delicado en la afinación de tus tambores dependiendo el diámetro y el estilo de música que vas a tocar, escucha muchas grabaciones (CDS) viejas y nuevas y compara, y experimenta con tus Congas: todos tenemos opiniones, pero al final del partido, el camino tuyo lo creas vos. Yo optaría por las tres en juego Meinl Fibercraft, de fibra, vienen con parches de cuero en general bueno, dales un tiempo a que se aflojen y el cuero tome sabor, si después de eso, no te gusta el sonido, busca algún cuero local (no se adonde vivís.) Si no, REMO sintéticos, pero (de nuevo: solo mi opinión y preferencia) no el SkynDeep pues es muy fino y a mi gusto no tiene cuerpo en los tonos abiertos, prefiero el Fiber 3 ó NuSkin y asegúrate de que sea el correcto para tu conga. A mi me encanta el sonido de las congas de fibra con el cuero natural, por una razón sencilla: en los 70's las LP Modelo Original de Fibra arrasaron con el mercado y de alguna manera, eso marcó un sonido en muchas grabaciones de esa era, que es una de las épocas de gloria de la salsa. Mucha suerte y Pa'lante!

Thanks for your comment. I am sorry you feel that way Liebeth... But just ... Be nice! There is no need to put negative comments. Think about it: there is the "like and dislike" buttons for that. Right? Besides: Out of about 130K viewers of this video, 1.5K loved it and only 54 not. You are talking to a 36 year professional full time musician here. What I am teaching is correct, AND what I am saying is correct, so in short: Have some respect, just like if you would be right here taking a lesson from me in my living room. You may find that you can spend much better your energy practicing than spreading negativity.
