All flying engineers in this comment section. I’m a pilot. Let’s just be pleased by the fact that it managed to even take off. Did you forget we’re talking about an a340-300? These things are not capable to withstand a climb. The earth curvature makes them gain altitude. They just cruise happily.

of course i know that it is an A340-300 and i seen in the last years a lot of take offs of this aircraft as well i flewn often with the A340 even with the havy southwind we have very often in Zurich/Switzerland but it was the first take like this i ever seen. the pilots did a great job in this situation

A340 Pilot: Looks like incorrect loadsheet CG (center of gravity) leading to incorrect stab trim OR crew set incorrect stab trim, based on the subsequent large nose up elevator imputs required to maintain T/O pitch attitude. If the stab trim was set for too much pitch up, it just takes a small input to start the rotation and you need to set the correct attitude. The automatic trim will set to the correct value when airborne based on sensor data.

The crew reported a tailwind while speeding up. It is very likely that this led to a lower airspeed, which resulted in an early rotation, whereupon the nose was lowered again for acceleration as a reaction.

Vr is an IAS. A sudden tailwind will lower the IAS , the crew will still rotate when Vr is eventually reached but GS will be higher. Looks like they rotated at too low a Vr

It cannot be tailwind because one can actually see the rudder doing pitch down during rotation.

the tailwind should be like 30kt to do something like that. Don’t forget that all TO performance calculations are based on engine failure scenario. Moreover I don’t know software for Airbus but in Boeing’s OPT is stated that if wind is low use -5kt wind for calculations to cover possible wind change to tailwind. I can’t really understand how tailwind let’s say 10kt may create this kind of subperforming takeoff. Probably not

Weight distribution or pitch issue, this is clearly a pilot's fault and should be taken very serious by the company. If you take a deep look into the second 0:16 you can clearly see the elevator deflected upwards, as they are initiating the rotation. The moment it goes back to neutral, at 0:22 the plane goes down and TOUCH the runway with the left back wheel, you can see how the elevator is deflected upwards again trying to recover. This is not a tailwind as the crew has declared. That's a liar. Edelweiss, Swiss and Lufthansa should take very seriously this incident.

What a catch! The speculations of couch-pilots in the comment section however is also quite spectacular. To me this looks like an intended pitch-down in order gain air speed, could have been a slight wind gust or vortexes from a previous departure out of RWY28. I guess we wait for the result of the investigations before we judge upon professionally educated pilots without knowing what was going on.

WOW! That might be a possible pilot deviation! If you have tail wind you know this before start, not after take off. 10 to 15 more knots on the take off role and everything is fine. The pilot took of to early for this wind conditions. This could have been worse!

underpowered ? ok but it is a 21 old aircraft you cannot expect an GE90 enginge not on the A340. i flewn also many times on the A340 among other much older aircrafts and never had any "shity" take offs. Sorry to hear that it happend to you a few times

Sudden tailwind on takeoff, perhaps?

This was reported, but there was practically no wind. I have never seen this before, even in winds of 50 km/h

speculation but they definitely entered the wrong takeoff config numbers and shit their pants when they realized

I believe sudden increase in tailwind which is not unnormal in Zurich. Initial rotation and lift of look ok, so TO data and config were correct in my eyes
