I have been enjoying this CD for a couple of years now and I am reminded how very pretty it is. There is nothing wrong with pretty music! Big band music does not have to be all hard edges. It doesn't have to be sharp elbows. It can also be a warm hug. Bravo!

Not sure why I never discovered this beautiful piece before, but what a nice surprise addition to my morning today. Thank you Marshall, and members of the WDR Band for this (and all you do!)

One of the best melodic compositions ever attempted on a bigband formation of the structure format and quality of the WDR bigband with regular international Jazz stars such as John Clayton, former Carl Fontana, Jon Fadis, Jacob Collier, Toot Thielemans, Maestro Lalo Schifrin (Latin Jazz Suite an out of this world DVD and CD recording) et al. Some of the best big band formations on both sides of the pond: WDR Bigband in Europe and the Big Phat Band in Los Angeles California USA. We are very proud to have such a pristine world class Jazz Ensemble in Cologne Germany!

what an incredible piece of music. Thanks for sharing this.
Really interesting color choices, e.g. flugels throughout the trumpets, clarinets in what's normally the sax section, removes pretty much all the "edge" from the sound, which adds to the warm trombone sounds. I'd love to know the background to this piece.

Jazz composition generally is quite lazy composition. It's too limited by style, feel, rhythm, orchestral expectation...In the end, it's also expected to become the basis for an improviser to play clichés over the composers' deeper, more thoughtful composition. Haven't seen real jazz composition in jazz since Miles' electric period or perhaps Jaco. The days of Ellington, Mingus, Evans (Bill and Gil) and Monk are over... :-(

...the above statement couldn't be further from the truth, there certainly are no limits and in the right hands, no cliches either. what a limited view.!
