Going back to the iconic sounds, I think an underrated one is the "3, 2, 1, Start" sound. It's one of few sounds that has been preserved across every entry of Gran Turismo. You hear that sound and you immediately know it's a GT series game. The racing transmission sounds I think are in 2 iterations. GT1-4 and GT5P-GT7. Same for turbo noise.

I found this at 14 years of age with no guide at all, so I don’t know where or why you would need a guide to discover this as anybody that knew slightly a little bit about cars would know that a Dodge Viper is a naturally aspirated V 10 which would work for the race and would ultimately dominate based on the other cars that are in the race.. But yes I did this raise hundreds of times back in the day! Just like the Seattle circuit race that unlocked the Shelby cobra for 75,000 credits in Gran Turismo two

Racing modification is essentially an ultimate form of weight reduction, it also adds aero kits and liveries to the cars. I think it also modifies the car's body, making it wider, allowing for significantly better grip and handling in corners. It is an all in one package really. Besides that, it does not really do anything else Kinda wish they kept this feature in the PS2 era games, as it was a nice way of turning your regular cars into proper racecars.
@emlyndewar2 жыл бұрын
I always loved that you could race mod basically everything in this game.
@WTFHAX932 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the only car you could not Race Mod in the first Gran Turismo was the Dodge Copperhead Concept Car, as the Race Mod for it was cut due to licensing problems. The Race Mod (silver or white), alongside the Special Model version (yellow or black), can be found in the beta builds of the game, where the car was still called by its original Copperhead name. Such a waste, because it made the car look like an actual legit race car too: a hardtop roof without the rear window and a big roof scoop, a big chassis mounted wing, exhausts where the license plate used to be, a Viper-styled hood, and sleeker wing mirrors mounted much higher (almost on the roof). The Concept Car LM Edition in Gran Turismo 2 kinda tried to emulate that look, but it didn't do it as good, because all it did was just recolor the roof to the body color and slap a wing (which, while kinda similar, didn't really look as good).

Seems like, from the beginning and at least until the massive delays with GT5, Polyphony Digital was always ahead of the game (pun intended). 1, 2, 3, & 4 were all just so far ahead of their respective times - each is so polished and well-presented. I hope, naively so, that they get back their footing one day and truly push the envelope again.

The physics were surprisingly well implemented. Weight transfer affects grip greatly; lots of lift off oversteer upon entry in this game. A bit exaggerated, but the intent was there. Also, nice touch to see car specs such as tire width and HP and torque curves, which determine the optimal shift point for each car and gearbox settings. Tire width increases grip as you'd expect. Comparing two slightly different models of the same car with differing tire widths does make a difference.

A few things you missed in your GT1 gameplay: - if you do Racing Modification in any car, it will do all the weight reduction for free; - if you do Qualify, you get extra credits for best place; - in the menu before racing, you can go to List Entry and check the opponents car, weight and power. This helps to know how many mods you need to have in order to beat them; - at the Megaspeed Special Event, during the Test Course race replay, go to any car and keep the camera looking behind. There's a "sound bug" in the last gear of each car that sounds like a vacuum cleaner; - there's a Viper GTS racing version that gives him a 7-speed gearbox, which makes him the only car in the game with 7 gears; - the fastest car in GT1 is the Skyline R33 GTR V-Spec racing mod, that can achieve 937hp.

(Gran Turismo 3 was always my home, but Gran Turismo 4 was the one I got the best grip on in terms of racing physics. With GT4, I can genuinely feel where the car wants to brake before I've even tried the brake pedal in a car/track combination before. It's so invigorating to be in symbiosis with a car, and the cartoon-y physics of GT1 got me to where I am today.)

Gran Turismo was really a trailblazer for games to come down the road. At the time GT was released, most racing games were arcade racers, with titles like Ridge Racer, Test Drive, Need For Speed and Daytona. There was nothing like GT beforehand. I got the game back in 1998, right after it came out in Europe. And my god, the difficulty of this game for a beginner was mind-boggling. It took a lot of trial and error to finally getting the licences done, and to start winning races. But once I mastered the driving, the game became quite easy. The game was indeed ahead of its time, with car tuning, modifying and a good selection of both cars and tracks (for the time). It was a truly amazing experience going from arcade racers to GT. After playing the game for 25 years, I can say that the best way to start out is to buy the A70 Supra, the black one you get in the used car dealership at day 1. It only costs 6500 credits, and leaves money for upgrades. This car can easily get you through most of the GT League, the FR Cup, the Japan vs US or UK championships and even the Megaspeed cup later on. Pretty much all of the A-level races. Also, doing the qualifying laps makes sense in this game, since you get bonus money for taking pole position. When you can afford it, get the Viper and do the Normal Car Championship. Note: The GTS is the better Viper, as the RT/10 tends to be very tail-happy. The best overall car to modify and tune for yourself is the Mazda RX-7 A-Spec. It has good enough top speed, great handling and lots of grip. The two best prize cars are the Cerbera LM and the special Dodce Concept Car. Powerful and lightweight. The fastest car is the 1995 model Toyota Supra, believe it or not.

If you were playing Gran Turismo two with it hooked up to a good stereo, the engine sounds when the cars were stock sounded identical to the way they sounded in real life while they were idling and low revs! Due to putting wear and tear on a car that does not belong to you, manufacturers did not allow the Gran Turismo team to redline the engines on a lot of the cars therefore is the reason you have the “vacuum cleaner“ sound at higher RPMs once you’re racing! Hearing the Camaro SS 97 model in Gran Turismo two idling on my buddy Chad’s JVC stereo system Sounded absolutely amazing at the time because, with the subwoofers and the car idling it sounded just like a real Camaro!

30:35 _That reminded me of one of the quickest ways to make money in GT5, which was to do the_ *American Championship* _with the Ford GT over and over again, it was 5 laps of Indianapolis (Indy500 layout) and you'd get 97.5k credits per win, you'd make about 600-800k an hour_

@29:40 My young self thought so too, or the TVRs. But finding alternatives for the Normal Car Contest has been the most fun I've had since revisiting the game. There's a capable used Impreza and RX7 for sub 20k.

It's a bit rough around the edges these days but it's still enjoyable enough to pick up and play, and deep enough that you can sink quite a bit of time into. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing the classic GT games. They really changed everything.

This was the start for me.. then i switched over to the forza series of games. This was the grandaddy of them all! Wished that forza had the ability to do different tire compounds like Gt did

5:16 pixel car racer is the best mobile racing game in my opinion because it has tones of good customization and pixelated graphics which I love it's just a shame they don't release updates for it anymore

Back in 98 and 99 the best trick was to do the B and A liscence, sell the prize cars and get a used 96 or 97 Nissan Enfiniti RX-7 and upgrade the handling and speed. Car was a money maker most my runs.

the car list may be small but it is cohesive. mostly japanese cars but then there are a dozen cars from other countries that are pretty special. such a polished game. gt2 had more content but it felt less cohesive imho

Idk if you found out yet, but you can check the stats of each car you'll about to race. I believe that subbie wagon has a tuned engine of a out 400 HP. I got this game for Christmas of 98 when I was 13 and I still have it 😁

Emulation warps a lot of things graphically from the oroginal, like the tachometer lines for instance. I love when chat makes fun of these old games which isn’t how they actually looked. Bless
