Interestingly Project Gotham Racing technically wasn't the first game of its type that its developers, Bizarre Creations, made. In 2000 they produced effectively a spiritual predecessor to PGR, a game called "Metropolis Street Racer" for the Sega Dreamcast. One could argue the original Xbox is kind of an unofficial successor itself to the Dreamcast.

@@nostalgigamer There's more than just the game. There was definitely a certain relationship between sega and microsoft not only during the development of the Xbox but even after it's launch. There are some easy to notice similarities, such as the almost identical controller layout, but also many of the big Dreamcast hits got their sequels on the Xbox (Jet Set Radio Future, Shenmue II, Sega GT 2002, also Outrun 2 which was originally developed for the Sega Naomi which is the arcade version of the Dreamcast architecture, also ended up being an Xbox release). Also, the Dreamcast's network infrastructure, which was it's big highlight at the time (with games like Phantasy Star Online and Quake III) may have served as the basis for the development of Xbox live (I heard that rumor somewhere, not sure how true that one is).

Both Gran Turismo and Forza hold very very special places in my heart. They are long running franchises with me right behind something like GTA or Mario to others. GT7 and Forza Horizon really hurt me and feel like betrayal, as it's people like me that brought those games to where they are today.

I think it’s funny how Midnight Club Street Racing was a PS2 launch title considering it was basically like a spiritual sequel to Midtown Madness 2 which was a Microsoft Windows game. I even remember on the Beetle RSI there was a racing livery promoting an early design of the Xbox on MM2.

5:10 - I don't think that the focus on IRL racing tracks is the problem. The problem is that every developer use same tracks. So many bad/mediocre but popular tracks are in use while many brilliant tracks to drive&race are only available as mods/dlcs in niche simracing games. Also I don't think I want T10 to add more street circuits as every street track they did in Xbox One era games sucks. And there is simple reason why are you enjoying this game more than FM7 - With FM5 came drastic change (downgrade) in driving physics which made cars more unresponsive, catching slides is riddiculously "delayed" and there is huge drag applied with slip angle that requires you to underdrive the car if you want to be competitive. This is what makes gameplay less fun in Xbox One era titles. And about content... Similar story. With new motorsport games you get much less interesting car roster with so many super/hypercars and suvs/trucks instead of odd shitboxes and budget enthusiast cars. Many cool IRL tracks were dropped in new titles while fictional circuits got much worse layouts for racing. Upgrades are especially massive downgrade with amount of options available (and design of said options). I personally miss rear diffusers despite how bad they looked in older games. I'd wish to get more options that look like aerodynamics upgrades used in amateur/grassroots motorsport and cups around the world instead of rice'y forza aero as the only competitive option.

it feels like the people that had passion about how a person went about playing a game all died off after 2010 or so. Once you had a certain amount of content for the player, it was just a "do what you want with it, we're too lazy besides adding achievements." Horizon 1 was the last forza game with a true feeling of progression.

Though Motorsport 6 and 7 still made you work for your reward, less wheel spins and payouts. Ultimately makes them better games imo. I still play FM7, and have already quit FH5.

Game producers are worried about sheer size, but they don't care about depth. That's why games like dark souls make a huge fuss, because they're deep games, there's a lot of stones to turn thete. After 5h of most racing games i just get tired of the lack of challenge and depth and go back to NFSU2, most wanted or prostreet, it's pretty sad actually.

13:11 the Toyota Solara was a 2 door, slightly more upscale version of the Camry sedan made for the American market. It was offered with a 4 or 6 cylinder engine and as a coupe or convertible. I remember when I was little my dad had a convertible one for a while when he worked for Toyota. He missed that car when he had to give it back.

My favorite Forza hands down is Forza Motorsport 2 because it did have an actual sense of progression very much like the first one and felt a lot more like a direct competitor to Gran Turismo. And in some ways I think was better because of having more customization and more European exotics. I'm a big fan of Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, etc so Gran Turismo 4 was kind of a let down for me back in the day on that front.

The reason for the crazy car that out classes the field was to encourage trade of cars between players online. They wanted to create a trade dynamic like Pokémon and actually hired someone to create a rarity system to try and replicate that. Rarity was based on performance and based of starting region. So if you pick NA then Asia and EU cars are considered rarer and you are less likely to come across them unless you traded over live. Cool idea, not so much in practice.

Before watching all of it.. Forza Motorsport 2 is amazing and totally holds up. Also having engine codes instead of "6.2L V8" was awesome and I can't believe they removed it.

In older FM games you can only swap engines from the same brand or manufacturer, but those motors had their real life manufactured codes in them, in their description was listed from which car were extracted from, and sometimes they could be from a specific car model that wasn't in the game. Now, in newer ones, the engines could be called "generics", but their stats, configuration, and sometimes sound could be copied from, mostly, every car in the game. So you can have a lsx swapped beetle, or a 2jz swapped BMW m3, in all but name

oh my god, Forza has really gone through a massive devolution in terms of car customization I mean of course it takes more time to model in new kits for new cars on new consoles, but even the cars that use the same models today as they did in Motorsport 1 (eg. Silvia S15, Skyline R34, Mazda RX-7 FD, the list goes on) don't have as many upgrades as they used to in this game, but the upgrades they still have do come from this game

forza 1 thru to 4 were the best in the series in my opinion, the career mode in 2 was perfect. 2 ditched night for some odd reason. 1 has a special feel to it, feels need for speedy in the city slash industrial zones and simulator in tracks.

I had both the Playstation and the Xbox of the time and found Forza to be superior to GT in almost every aspect. I especially liked the ability to create liveries on cars and then sell them in the "marketplace". Making Lambos dressed as black & white US cop cars was fun but the fact that you could do this and then see your creation being driven on track by the very person who bought it and you would say, "I did that".

Forza 1 is superior to it's successors too because its theme is car culture and the tracks reflects it. After FM1 comes FM4. FM7 never even touched the heights of FM4 and 1, especially because of the hud that comes from windows tile style. That sucks ass. The best new Forza game is Horizon 4. Horizon 5 has a lot of tech into it that makes it technically better but the biome and general theme is worse. Some cars are very interesting in FH5, but there are too many SUVs. SUVs are not cars. Surely not worth driving.

Forza 1 was awesome. probably put 1,000 hours in this game. Had Car clubs, lots of customization, could put skins on cars or make your own paint job. I miss the Car Clubs...the club I belonged to was the best...always had that one guy that was the master with Tuning cars. @@sukhdevr3489 and yet!! the game stayed respectable and representative of JDM car culture, with many real life visual upgrades for the JDM cars in FM1 and perhaps the freqent pre-tuned JDM prize cars were an ode to Gran Turismo 2??? I believe in FM1 you unlock like 2 similar tuned Integras and 3 tuned MR2s lmao. As far as circuits... including Tsukuba - Fujimi Kaido - Twin Ring Motegi - Tokyo Street Circuit (miss this layout...) and Suzuka to be added in later titles. For me in Forza 1 they achieved a great balance of "yes, gran turismo is why we are making this game, JDM 4 lyfe" but also "let's make a better racing simcade experience..."

I really hope they bring back unlocking specific cars from specific events. They got rid of it in FM3 and it makes me so much less motivated to keep playing the game. FM1&2 are great because each event gives you a unique car, giving you a reason to beat every event. It's so much more rewarding than just grinding for credits (although some grinding is okay) and wheelspins (which do NOT belong in Motorsport).

I played every Forza Motorsport and every new game is worse than the previous. My all time favourite is FM2 which has the best physics IMO, it's perfectly balanced to be realistic in all the ways but arcade just enough to be managable with a controller while still being responsive. FM4 was also really cool but since then, all the FM games seems so hollow... I would really like to see you try FM2 !

Just a little note: PGR comes from the Dreamcast game Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) even the hud and car controls are almost identical, besides the Kudos points that carried to PGR 4. I miss the franchise

Even before Forza, Sega GT 2002 tried rivaling Grand Turismo as a more realistic style racing game. That was a game that I believe was sold as a package deal with new Xboxes on release, and it really was quite good for the time.

Never played 2002, but I remember Sega GT on the Dreamcast. That was a weird game. The cars just felt so strange, like hovercrafts.

Yeah, I miss this kind of career structure. Forza switching to seasons really took the fun out of things and I feel like they'd rather reward you with credits nowadays instead of cars.

As someone who has played every forza title and project Gotham racing title, Forza Motorsport has lost what it once was smh, it saddens me, especially with fm8. I can’t believe that shitty ass game was released in the state it was. And then project Gotham racing, please tell me how did project Gotham racing 3 come out in 2005 as a launch title and still one of the best looking game in that generation, then we get to pgr4, HOW the hell does that that have better rain affects then some modern racing games? The fact you were able to stream live weather from weather channel on the tracks that were based on real locations? Nah dawg, back in 2007????? And free roam on multiplayer????? No way. Project gotham racing 1 😭🙏 made me feel like I was playing fast and furious, project Gotham racing 2, gah damn why they detailed garages like that 🫣 and arcade machines and 2,3 and 4????? Forza please take that inspiration you used back then in your modern games. Forza as a whole is in need right now, Forza horizon 5 it has revived itself by listening to the community sure, I praise them for that but they should not be releasing unfinished shit but it looks like at the state car games current state we’ll have to deal with it smh. Oh I miss the old days.

As someone who has never played a sim racing game, what is the difference in gameplay between Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon?

The feel is a lot different in horizon since most cars feel kinda the same but Motorsport is different the handling model is less forgiving it’s a lot easier to lose traction and spin and under/oversteer there isn’t as much grip or instant torque.

Forza Motorsport (since the first game) has tuning. So you can go very in-depth with car setup if you wish. Horizon has no mechanical damage or tuning options, only upgrade parts and visual damage...

Forza Motorsport has always been more arcade than GT. Even the latest Forza Motorsport was way more arcade like compared its "rival" at the time GT Sport. I see all the latest trailers and discussions with the new Forza and love the visuals but they dont go into detail about the actual driving mechanics and im sure its done on purpose. Its all just buzzwords like "better physics, better this, better that" so consumers will create and expect this perfect expectation of the new game. Dont get me wrong, I would love nothing more for Forza Motorsport to start getting more "sim" but I have my doubts. GT has always towed the line between sim and arcade and being able to appeal to the casuals and the sim racing community. I believe Forza hasn't yet because of many reasons, one reason being they need to apply to as many people as possible for those profits. I think Assetto Corsa 2 will be the Sim that wakes up both GT and Forza player fanbases to a more realistic driving experience with just as many cars, way more tracks, multiplayer, and great visuals. The console market the biggest piece of market share for developers and its hard for sim racing games in general to thrive. But its definitely starting to grow. Obviously, many factors are involved and the big one is what the player uses for controls. With any Simcade or Sim, if you use a controller, like 99% of players in the console space, its a completely inferior and extremely different experience than a Force Feedback Wheel. Which is another big investment that most gamers are not willing to shell out for. Even an entry level wheel $300-400 so i get it. I just want the Sim Racing Community to keep growing so more Devs have the resources to keep on making great driving games for all us to experience. Im definitely more of a "Sim Racer" and love playing AC, ACC, iRacing, Dirt Rally, rFactor 2, etc) but Also enjoy Gran Turismo. Sometimes ill even but out the controller and play Forza Horizen. But again, Forza Motorsport will always be on the edge of Visuals but to me, every one of their Motorsport titles and their driving mechanics have always felt weird to play. Like they keep missing the mark. Lets hope this new FM can actually be a good feeling racing game given that fact there is no excuse with Next Gen Console Hardware being any sort of limitation when it comes to calculating physics with a good physical Tire model, Aerodynamics, Suspension, and all the other things that need to be simulated to somewhat high levels for a realistic and good driving experience.

I like cart racers like most people. I get they are different from racing Sims and diving sims...but why the hate from cartubers? Forza and NFS are not my thing. I hate the realistic physics and the graphics...look ugly and creepy. I prefer racing games with pixels or cell shading. Most of those are dead or indes. These big 3 also only have modern cars..just no. All they have IS ICE and EVs. No hydro, GNC, air, gyro, steam, or nitrogen. No whites, Doubles, or Sinclairs. They got some classic cars, but only to the 40s without mods. Where is Forza Steam punk or Electric Boobolu? Why is there no tuktuks or quadcycles. They don't even have women anymore. Who other then liberals hate booth babes or sexy female drivers.

As you mentioned, the only great variety were getting is coming from Indie Studios and that seems to be the way it going to be for a while. But, im hopeful because Unreal Engine 5 in conjunction with Ai, Asset Stores, MoCap Animation from Video, etc) all have made it even even more possible for the average person to make a game. Literally anyone with enough time for a hobby that dedicated it to learning UE5, could a game thats unique and fun and we are seeing that more and more. I swear, By end of 2025, there will be over 100 games with a Metacritic Score over 80 that was made by 1 guy a handful of people. The Industry is flipping over backwards. WIld times!

@d3tach3d no. I am serious. I prefer kart games. Cartubers like Donut do not and hate them. Why though. I think it is about realistic physics and driving. I don't get it AND it seems weird. Combat games like twisted metal are ignored too. So are top games like Micro Machines and sprite scallers like Outrun. They are ignored for games like Forza, GR, or iRacing and promted like gods. I go...OK another Sim. Even old simulation games get ignored or treated like trash because of graphics. I grew up with the Mega Drive and later GC and PS2. The 5th Gen 2d games still look good today. .For me Simcade is boring driving. That is why Nascar was boring to me. I saw Donuts video on hot wheels vs match box cars. I was looking into the accelerators tcg at the time. As state not a car guy just a casual. Then I saw there video on there Changli truck. Then started seeing other videos about it. Then started watching Donuts podcast channel. As stated I mentioned I don't like them, buy you doing so is fine. What is interesting in the Simcade games is the cars. The racing part looks boring to me. Most only have modern or track cars. Only a few cartubers cover cars beyond the big 3...and they suck. Another SUV from Ford..great. I can't even find our car in the parking lot. Ford sucks...not as bad as John Deer,but still bad. Let's not make our cars fixable before everyone else. Oh let's stuff this engine from under. How many farmers have pits to drop a motor. Let's make the radio software software. Want to use a tailor got to buy another hitch. Oh and rust protection...nah you can just die from tennis for all we care. Need a new touch screen 800 USD please...that is a lawnmower.
