More blades tend to make a higher pitched noise. Saw this on a bus HVAC system equipped with 5 condenser fans on the roof unit. Earlier versions of the roof unit have 3 bladed fans, later ones 7 bladed fans. The former give way to a bass sound when running. The latter are pretty silent instead.

A substantial change in sound could very well be owing to the fact that the duct with the 12 bladed fan is mounted in a secondary enclosure, which could dampen high frequency resonance, as well as the screws protruding into the Chamber of the duct which would impede airflow and by that resistance change the overall tone. You also need to know how much current the motor is drawing and the decibel level at a given RPM, Even varying the finger pressure as you hold it in your hand could make a substantial difference in the resulting sound, so they both need to be in identical mounts/clamps of some manner. It's not really a fair (scientifically-empirical) comparison unless EVERYTHING (including the room that the test is taking place in) is identical, with the exception of the fan-blades.

I found out that these 12 blade fans are not good for hand launch takeoffs due to their tendency to stall ( blades on the impeller ) causing a significant decrease in thrust. The more conventional 5 blade impellers have better hand launch performance. When the 12 blade spools to 100% at a stand still, as in a hand launch situation, the impeller is trying to push out more air than can be efficiently pulled in from the usually narrow intakes - this causes the blades to stall. This effect can actually be seen by hooking your model to a scale, bringing the thrust from 0 - 100%, and seeing a drop in thrust when approaching 100%, this is while the model is in a static position. Cutting cheater holes in the body, or enlarging the intakes can remediate some of this problem.
@nicevideochannel65836 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 5 Blade gives more thrust because of more space maybe.

The sheet metal screws hanging out in the flow aren't doing the 12 blade any good either in thrust or sound. Better to use pan head (or even better flat head) machine screws installed from the inside and put the nuts on the outside.

You don't use the same motor and cowl to test the fans so your result is skewed, the EDF motor appears more solid and probably has better bearings. I assume both motors are brushless. Still nice to see what the EDF does.
@joshuaericilac6 жыл бұрын
Nick Carter your point is a dud because these two are factory setup not modded so how would he have used the same cowl and the same motor ..... think about it before typing it
@nickcarter95386 жыл бұрын
No it's not, the title of video was comparing 5 and 12 bladed fans, not 5 and 12 bladed units, my interest was in the difference in performance of a 5 and 12 bladed fan, to properly assess that difference the same motor and cowl should be used. In addition I now believe the 5 bladed unit had a brushed motor and the 12 bladed may have been brushless which affects the sound considerably. I'm more than a little autistic so I tend to be very literal, I was not criticising the producer of the video but pointing out an error that any engineer or scientist would realise compromised the validity of the comparison, you will also note that I did complement the video for what it did show. I am not a troll but an engineer who wants things done properly so that we avoid misunderstanding of a situation, misunderstandings that occur too much in today's world.
@realflow1006 жыл бұрын
Nope they are both brushless.
@sikrandall836 жыл бұрын
Nick Carter you say "the edf" as if they are not both edf units. Supposing there are subtle differences in sound between the two cowlings I think the point of the video is to say generally this is how a 5 blade edf unit sounds, generally this is how a 12 blade edf unit sounds. Of course there are many factors that might bring changes to your exact application but my god we'd be here all of 2018 trying to cater to every individual application. Furthermore the title of the video was not comparison of 5 and 12 blade fans leading one to presume the comparison is the performance of the units. The title of the video is "sound comparison of the 5 and 12 blade."
@sikrandall836 жыл бұрын
AmIonArock so nick says he wants a performance comparison, the video says a sound comparison, you say nick has a valid point. Noted.....

but does the higher loading produce more thrust and if it does, is the efficiency the same when producing the same thrust?

@@rottondog1473 as one increase the number of blade, loading increase, efficiency decline means more power require but thrust increase marginally . The famous Schubeler EDF. Google the spec sheet of their lesser blade EDF Vs the multin bladed EDF of the same diameter and you can see a big drop in efficiency for EDF with higher blade count.

How much power can you get out of these wee motors? I should imagine it wouldn't take much to put together something like a 3 stage bypass compressor (EJ200 style!), add a fair old bit of thrust to the setup. If you can get the chooch out of the motor, it shouldn't be too difficult to get your exhaust supersonic, though I would imagine at much lower mass flowrates. Still though - an authentic jet exhaust out of an electric motor would sound cool!
