Here’s the Bach Sarabande on each, for a really direct comparison: 6:45 Scala Perfetta Stradivari Model 11:43 Linear Macchi Stradivari Model 16:24 Master Russ Cello Stradivari Model 21:09 Master Russ Cello Montagana Model Thanks to Edgar for doing this video. As someone fairly new to the cello, I'm keen to learn more about the differences between shapes and making standards, and there's surprisingly little out there that shows, for example, an equivalent Montagana vs a Strad.

Wow. The montagnana definitely has some punch to it. Rich rounded and bold sound.

Absolutely love the sound of the Montagnana model 😊

Strangely enough, I really liked the Linea Macchi a lot, and felt that it's a "third" master cello along with Strad and Montagnana. Maybe it's because I play on a French cello though 😉

The sound is recoding quality, with just the instrument. I listen through TV speakers and listen to recordings on same speakers. Got the headphones working and it is like listening to an analog recording transferred to a CD, you hear everything. Breathing, the hairs of the bow, the wood of the instrument, with this fidelity I suspect the master sound people doing recordings filter the totally honest results. The last 3 sounded similar, the last one probably had the most dominant low undertones, the room is probably too small for headphones and the low undertones of these large instruments where they dominate the sound at their highest levels.

All pretty good. Montagnana might have an edge, but really liked the Linea Macchi as a close second.

Very interesting video! I have actually been looking for a direct comparison myself between a Montagnana and a Stradivari model with a decent microphone, so this was perfect :-D

Sounds beautiful in the car! Excellent sound quality. Roswell Pro Audio has some wonderful microphones as well: the Colares is exquisite, but the mini k47 is a $400 mic that competes with microphones in the $2000 range

I have a Pietro Guarneri of Venice cello copy. It is wider than a Strad, but more narrow than a Montagnana. The G is especially rich. Bowing is more difficult on wider cellos as I often rub the C bout with my bow if I'm not careful. But I truly think the wider cellos have better sound in the lower register. I was using TV speakers. I had to turn up the sound to maximum as it was very low volume. It was difficult to hear a difference on my device unfortunately. I enjoy your videos. Thank you

Personally, I'm drawn to the Master Russ Cello (Montagnana Model). And, I must say they all play beautifully. Are the woods in the higher priced models aged longer? What construction features differentiates pricing between various models? Thank you for sharing these side by side comparisons. Can you create a video in comparison of good quality bows?

I like both master cellos, The other 2 feels lacking in the treble side.

As an owner of a Montagnana model cello, I feel it is my obligation to point out that it is spelled incorrectly in the title overlay in your video as well as in the description :) Of course, the Montagnana is the best sounding of the bunch :)

What is meant by the name Linea Macchi? Does it mean finely machined or precisely made?

The name Linea Macchi comes from the street where my workshop is located, these instruments are entirely crafted by violin makers working in my workshop under my supervision 😉👍🏻

It’s funny to see a maker of 100k euros cello complaining to pay 1000 for a good mic. A top Newman mic can reach 10.000 easily.😅
