hello Edgar!, what is your opinion on the Aubert self-adjusting violin bridge? Please answer because the bridge on my violin is warped and the nearest violin maker is in another city

This is very beautifully made, both instruments and antiquing, but only true patina is charming, in my opinion. For sure this is a matter of taste, but the wear of an antique instrument tells you a story, and antiqued instruments have no stories yet to tell - they are simply fake, they betray. They want to be what they are not. If you buy one, you know this and you can't fool yourself, so you buy it to fool your friends and audience?? If I want an old instrument I buy an old one (there are lots of good sounding cheap old instruments out there from unknown makers), and if I want a new one I buy it (maybe from Edgar) and give it its own wear over the years, I leave my own traces of usage behind on it like a diary. But the market demands, and the luthier of course delivers...

I almost finished this viola da gamba (again, so I can play it, not wishing to become a luthier!): instagram.com/p/CMxOLwMgPpa/?igshid=qbkucubsqtu8 and in some places it is done with such an obvious “none-routine”, hesitant, unmastered skill that my instrument looks truly “antiquing” style 😆😛😝

Hello Edgar! I'm just starting out in violin making, myself. What is the name of that book with the pictures of the master instruments? I'm trying to pull inspiration from many different violins :)

courtnall and johnson is a good book. There are many books with pictures of great masters, they are quite expensive, but this one is both an excellent manual on violinmaking and has some pictures of great instruments to inspire you.

I can see what you mean, but his copy is really outstanding - I have one which is a copy of a Peter of Mantua and I really love it, and of course I could never have the original but it combines the craftsmanship of the maker (Neil Ertz) and the great Italian tradition.

Because, as is said, nobody likes shiny, new violins, they look cheaper, depending on the artistic abilities, methods of aplication. Edgars violin looks fake, because the back maple is finer and not cut origionally exactly to the grain of the wood to resemble completely, the original and the stripes widths are not as full, as in the darker grain of the maple is tighter than the original. Nice violin, not correct F holes either to the original.

Varnish should be all even let it wear out on his own. If I’m going to pay a lot for the violin I would like it all even not old. Your choice your option. Russ dose amazing violins either way.
