This vid is for Tmunds1. He requested to see an edge brought from butter knife dull to sharp using only the Spyderco Double Stuff.
This is hardly as sharp as I can get the edge using that stone, but I wasn't able to hold it how I normally would. Even though I didn't get it hair whittling sharp I think it demonstrates how easy it is to repair an edge using this stone.
**************Below is Tmunds1's Paypal address. The medical bills are piling up so if you are inclined to make a donation then I'm sure him and his family would be forever thankful.****************

I love all the sharpening videos, I always learn something. I've been diving into the sharpening "hobby" lately, as I find it somewhat relaxing and fun. I just ordered a couple of Knives Plus strops as per your recommendation, came from really close here in Texas too, always good to support fellow Texans. HAHA.

Hey. I saw one comment asking about using this on Fallkniven knives. I got an old F1 and for sharpening it I always use this stone. It is _so_ much better than the DC3-stone I've previously used, you really get the knife razor sharp! Always bring it and some leather on hikes.

Now that you mention it does makes sense, the blades that I was practicing on did have a distal tapering and are thicker behind the edge near the choil, hmm, maybe it's my technique too and I need to rock the blade in a slightly different manner. Thanks for the reply, you rock.

Just wanted to share my two cents... I love the Spyderco Double Stuff! I've used it to reprofile and repair damaged tips on my knives. Took a while, though to remove steel. But it wasn't that bad. I was working with 420HC and 1095. I always EDC my Double Stuff along with my favorite fixed blades, folders and multi-tools. The suede pouch also makes a reliable strop. I've just subscribed and loving your channel! Cheers...

After initially setting the new micro bevel, are there any tips/tricks to return to that bevel every time you switch sides, switch grits or lift the blade up from the stone? Can you actually tell if you've accurately returned to the micro bevel, or is it mainly a feel or visual reference thing? Thanks!

I do normally hold it in a fashion similar to that, but it was kind of awkward in this vid due to the angle. Normally I pinch it between my thumb and middle finger, that gives me a ton of control and also keeps most of my hand/fingers out of the way. Hope I didn't step on your toes with the description/paypal thing. Just wanted to do my part to help out. :)

😮9 edge leading and 8 edge trailing strokes raised a burr, that steel must be made of playdough, I don't know if I ever got to hair whittling sharp with a micro bevel, or had hair whittling sharp blade with a factory edge, I've stropped factory edges to hair whittling sharp, I'm not saying it can't be done but I don't think I ever got there.😮
@jdavis882
@jdavis882 21 күн бұрын
Nah it was just a thin edge. The actual apex was much more acute than the 40 ish degrees on the I was sharpening at. So it only took a few strokes to throw on a 40 degree micro bevel.

id suggest powdered abrasive cleaner like ajax or something.... use a dish scrungie pad, or wutever the hell u call them lol.... just add a bit of water, so its more like a paste..... scrub them, rise them, and your done! P.S. you will learn to 'feel' a dirty stone when sharpening, its almost like the stone becomes too smooth, also like jdavis says, a dirty stone cuts much slower ;)

Hey Love the vids. Btw Can you shave your face with your sharpest edge? Not this edge here, but something that you would get from the WE maybe or a really steady freehand session? I find that I can't pass the (hanging hair test)HHT-4 on folders except for like 40% of the edge near the tip. So the rest of the choil area just catches and splits the hair or not even catching. Have you had this problem also?

Just keep practicing. Go as slow as possible and really concentrate on keeping yourself rigid. Or, you can do the opposite of that and just do what comes naturally. Try both ways and see which works best.

I know that this may not be the best tool to sharpen for the S110V P3 I have, what are your thoughts about sharpening that knife with this stone? What I heard is that the stone will eat the vanadium up so I would ideally use a diamond stone which ill get but in the meantime I want to fix my edge as it is sharp, but when cutting paper it gets stuck a bit, actually quite often unless i wipe the blade after every slice.
@jdavis882
@jdavis882 5 жыл бұрын
I often use this exact stone to sharpen up anything from s110v to maxamet, which makes s110v seem like 8cr13mov. I wouldn’t use this stone if your knife is dull, there are better choices. But if you’re just honing a little life back into the edge, then this stone is perfect!

@@jdavis882 yeah I realized angle is really really important, matching the bezel. My knife is very new so it's already sharp just wasn't cutting paper well. Kept getting snagged. I did some proper stroking on the ceramic side to fix edge a bit then I stropped with dia spray .5 micron on the smooth leather or suede it may be called it's the slick surface. Seemed to help a ton! Thanks for the feedback brother God bless 🙏
@jdavis882
@jdavis882 5 жыл бұрын
Martin Djobadze awesome man, glad to hear you got it cutting cleanly again. That .5 micron diamond spray is something else. Depending on how dull a knife is I can bring back some pretty bad edges just from stropping on diamond. It’s really aggressive. Thanks for watching!

I can shave my face with my mediocre edges. My sharpest edges are along the lines of dropping a hair onto the edge and it breaking under its own weight. I find that I really have to thin the tip out a lot to get it screaming sharp. It seems like the thicker stock combined with the free hand motion makes it hard to get that part sharp without it being thin. That's just me though, it could be many different reasons.
