Spring steel can take a scary thin edge well, and multiply the cutting effectiveness. Please test these steels with extra fine grinds :)

Like others have said I would love to see you test your Buck in 5160 to see how that does. Great video - keep it up!

Say Heah Cedric, I like 5160 for some of my larger chopper's like my O. K. C. Gen2 SP-51 and one of my Fav's SP-53. I also have an older set that was tempered in a higher RC, My Ranger T. F. I. and my Ranger RD-9 and Afghan all in the 5160, But for knives that I need to hold a better edge retention , I like the 52100 a Ballbraring Steel , It's similar to the 5160 but with more carbon.,,.

Hey have you done a 5160 with a Bos heat treat? I know in the buck 110 model 5160 is an upgrade from the 420hc which actually did better in your Edge retention test then regular 5160

Hey Cedric 👍🏻on this blade I owned it for about a week and gifted it to an old friend who didn't have any knives or a knife for that matter I actually gave him 3 fixed blades , ESEE#5,OKC bushcrafter ,& Mora Companion in carbon steel, but I digress lol ! Anyway this OKC knife is descent quality but for a bushcraft knife I wasn't impressed my edge came extremely dull and unfit for any type of cutting tasks I was disappointed with it out of the box ! Thanks for the video , cheers 👍🏻🇺🇸🍺✌🏻️

Well, 5160 is more known for being super tough so it was expected to have somewhat poor edge retention.

German Survivalist yeah, absolutely. I value edge retention much less in fixed knives, as they rarely cut the tricky fibrous stuff in their real world uses

@@ryneagheilim9782 Yes, absolutely. It is not well suited for it though. You`d want the HRC to be on the high end for 5160 to be stable with a hollow grind.

5160 is my favorite steel for knives. It’s a great balance between hardness and toughness, especially if you do the 3 rounds of normalizing, then harden, then anneal, but not the usual 2-3 hours… nope, 1 hour of annealing keeps it at the hardness level most prefer in knives.

When i was in Nepal i watched a Kukri being made. They use the springs of trucks of course and they explained to me they tempered them for toughness rather then sharpness. Same gig i reckon?

If you ask me I’d rather have a blade that can chop a nail in half and just have to sharpen it from time to time. That being said those guys in Nepal are wizards when it comes to heat treating 5160. I myself have still yet to be able to chop a nail in half with out edge damage. But other steels like cpm 3v are very good you can chop hard stuff with out taking edge damage and you can it’s also really abrasive resistant as well

you should try Bos 5160. Since the Bos 420hc did so much better than the regular.

Paul Costley bos heat treating process is the best I’ve ever seen. They know how to put steel right in the middle of hardness and toughness.

Hmmm maybe it has to do with different heat treats or rockwell hardness, but I have knife that was made by my grandfather out of 5160 and I did my own version of this test and it got to 71 cuts before no longer slicing paper. Also possible the rope I used was different. Anyway great video like always!
@CedricAda

+WhosThatGuy woud definitely be a rockwell issue. An extra bit of hardness should boost edge retention a touch

The Rockwell hardness on Ontario's 5160 is rather low, around 53 - 55.

This testing is awesome BUT if Aussie rope is like Aussie wood this might not be accurate for the rest of the world😅

It’s hard to judge 5160 with that low of a Rockwell hardness. Low 50s is something more suited for a chopper where toughness outweighs the need for edge retention. I enjoy your videos, I just think you judged 5160 unfairly.
