All those berries packed into the freezer is surely a vision to behold. 👍 I like your commanding view of the Farm from the back of the truck, Duane. It's hard to gauge just who is taking the lead/ in charge. You look as if you could do with a couple of extra hands picking the fruit. Pity I do not live in the USA. I'll have to start growing my own.

Excellent suggestion and I think we may consider that at some point. The key is whether or not we eventually sell individual cuts of meat. For now it's only half/whole animals that we deliver they same day to customers.

Wow those pigs are huge! Did you say the diameter of the turkey enclosure? I’m with you, that’s what we always called plywood.😉I’m sure you won’t remember(regarding my Pakistani mul😢tree) but I was out in Cali to visit family & went to a nursery & found my tree, turns out it’s a dwarf Pakistani mulberry which will produce small berries. I tried a Loquat fruit for the first time & it tasted a bit like apricot? I love the animal water system. Brava👏I always learn something while watching your vids. Tickle tickle 🤣❤️🙋‍♀️👩‍🌾

It is so funny to hear you talk about the time it takes to harvest. I don't have anywhere near the quantity of trees as you and I still hate harvesting. I love gardening and taking care of everything. I also like to eat it. But, I find myself not wanting to harvest. I have 3 mulberry trees and can easily spend 30 minutes a day at peak production. Today I harvest all of our garlic and a little bit of citrus (grapefruit) that I hadn't gotten off the tree yet. Tomatoes are in full swing and will be getting ready in a couple of weeks. I also got a bunch of peaches off my tree today. In all I spent about 40 minutes just harvesting!

Hey there Alan! We're right there with you. It's funny, because we also love watching everything grow and enjoying the harvest itself, but harvesting is a drag! I remember well those tomato plants of yours. We're trying to follow in your footsteps with a few plantings here and there. Also harvested garlic today as well, so its sounds like we're on the same page!

Hi guys, loving the inspiration. I’m in Western Australia and have a similar climate to you. I was wondering what pests you struggle with, if any? Keep up the great work and thanks for all the effort you put in. 👍👍

Hey there Lesley. We are blessed here to have very few pests. Honestly, the only pests we have to deal with are varmints. Rabbits and ground squirrels. That and the birds of course which causes us to net trees at harvest time.

@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Hey there Ahmad. We usually water the berries once/week and they don't need a tremendous amount of water. It's on drip irrigation and the beds run for a couple hours once/week. Now they do fine with even more water than that, so I would probably water a potted bush daily, especially during the summer months. We have not had a blackberry die with too much watering, so I would say to err on the side of too much vs not enough.

I love watching your channel! I am in a zone 7 but in eastern wa which is one step above desert. I think we get 6-8 inches of rain a year. Its great to see what you guys accomplish. I am curious what you guys think about companion planting and understory planting. (like herbs or small fruit bushes under the trees etc.) Have you choosen not to do that because of your climate or because of the farm aspect of your set up?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Great question and we get this all the time. The primary reason we don't do companion planting in our orchards is so we can easily fertilizer around the tree (without digging up other plants 3x/year) and complete harvesting. We intend on having U-pick operations as well, so to your point we need to have a clear space for folks to pick fruit. In addition, keeping the area clear under the tree allows us to see any critters that might want to take a bite out of us or a visitor. I.E. rattlesnakes which are on the property from time to time. Lastly, anything that we grow has to be irrigated. This means we can only grow companion plants where we irrigate for the fruit trees. Most companion plants still need to be managed (cut back, replanted, etc) and we simply don't have the time to do that maintenance. On a smaller scale, under the right conditions, I think it can be a solid option once the trees are fully established and will be able to outcompete the companion plants for water and soil nutrition.
@lwjenson
@lwjenson Жыл бұрын
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm thanks for your reply! Totally makes sense! I am planning on planting intensely (in a backyard), but I also have to irrigate everything so I have to figure out how I am going to set that up.
