The Canna Lily
www.thesurvivalgardener.com/su...
Canna lily is a member of the banana family
The seeds come from the spiky pods which appear after the flower dies
Pod must be dry and brown before the seed is ready to harvest
The flower and rhizome is edible
In Canna, Vietnam the rhizome is processed to make a powdered starch. The starch is used to make cellophane noodles.
After a frost or freeze the plant will turn brown.
Cut off old plant and new shoots will form in spring
Canna Lilies have very low pest pressure
When propagating by seed, score the seed slightly and soak over night.
hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proce... including Vietnam uses)
Hardy in zones 8-11
They will grow in full sun to shade and like to be kept moist
Official name Canna Indica

My favorite edible thing that most people don't know you can eat is sweet potato vine leaves. Cook them down and they taste like spinach; but better. And they grow during the hot summer when most other leafy greens can't take the heat. I need to try Canna Lily. I have been enjoying yall's videos,. Keep up the good work.

Pastor Don Elbourne we have a bunch of sweet potato vines that kinda got flooded out this summer. Haven’t tried them yet but will take your advice and give them a try!💚

Yes, also the long stem of each potato leaf is also edible. We used to peel off the thin layer on the outside of the stem first and then break the stem into 2" long pieces and then stir fry it. Delicious. Also young pumpkin leaves and stems of leaves are also edible - sitr fry with eggs is perfect. But we only ate young, tender ones.

Here in Hawai'i we call them "Ali"ipoe" and the dried seeds are used in Hula i.e. ʻUlīʻulī (Hawaiian Ratlle).

I have several edible green things in my yard, people always seem surprised: Cactus (Dear old NOPALES, the cow's tongue type with few spines. It took years to learn how to cook them so I want to eat it!). Sweet potato vines as many have mentioned. Leaves of bean plants, like field peas or other cow peas, mung beans. Cassava leaves! Not so appetizing, they are very tough. Shredding them into nothing with a sharp knife seems to help. You can make the Portugese Caldo Verde. That would ordinarily be Kale which is also barely edible... and when you get Cassava leaves you get a lot! And Moringa. I tell people "If you're not good at gardening, this is what you get!". It's like bachelor farming sort of, looking for plants that are rugged and hard to stop. So maybe I WANT tomatoes and GET cactus!

Hi! I’m glad your little Dulce is doing better! We have cannas and we tend to prune them after the flower fades. After watching your video, we may try letting it go to seed. I would love more cannas! Thanks!

Aloha Susan thanks! We are so glad that Dulce is doing better. I worry about our pups like I do our kids! I always admire the seed pods and wait til they turn brown before cutting them back. If you do try to start them from seed, make sure you score the seed with a clipper or file until you see a little white. Then soak them for a day or two. Otherwise they may not germinate. Have a beautiful day! 🌞🌴💚

Hi! Thanks for this information! There are a lot of varieties of canna, are all edible? I have two varieties, one with dark red leafs and the other with green leafs.

I've read that they are all edible, but there is a group of them that are raised as a root crop and have less showy flowers. I'm pretty sure I've seen the roots in a Hispanic market, but everything has seven names in that sector so it's hard to be sure. Worse yet apparently they are very variable in terms of the seed, so I guess our only hope is to find one you like and propagate it from the roots so they are all clones. Or just play a giant genetic lottery, and if you get something good maybe you can name it?

I got 4 seeds and all came up, but I foolishly planted in too much sun (in Haiti, our sun is VERY strong)! So I have one little baby still struggling. Any advice on helping it grow happily?

40rtyPluss from what I gather they like to be kept moist. Our Florida sun is quite intense and they seem to thrive really well. We get a ton of rain here and they seem to really like it! That would be my only thought! 💚 what color is yours?

Are all kinds of canna lilies edible? Mine has variegated light and dark green foliage and orange flowers. I don't know the exact name/kind. Can I use the leaves to wrap food for steaming or boiling and eat the flowers and tubers? I have been going far to buy banana leaves for wrapping. Thanks

I don’t think they are harmful but they have like three hard seeds that may not been very palatable. I’ve never heard of eating them though. 😎
