I like them all, large and small, doesn't matter if they're tall, just so they bloom into the fall. Thanks for the tour.

We agree! We love all cannas: all sizes, colors, striped or solid leaves, whether they produce seeds or need to be pulled up for their rhizomes. We love them all! Can't wait till we can start our new canna gardens in the Spring. 😀

The Cannova series really is rather outstanding, my favorite is 'Bronze Scarlet', mine produces 4 bloom cycles per each stem! I also have the variegated "Original Tropicanna' and it indeed has STUNNING multi colored foliage!! "Fire Dragon' is one I really want and yet to track down here in Canada, those blooms are just something else!!

Hi TR_NW: Thanks for your comment. Glad to meet another canna lover ... in Canada. Yes, Cannova and Original cannas are awesome! As for the Fire Dragon - it has become one of our favorites. Unfortunately, we mentioned in our 2022 Walk Through video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2HRXpWgiZmaarc, that there was a flood in our canna garden and the plant and rhizomes were ruined so we had to grow from seeds. But what we're learning about Fire Dragon is that if you don't grow from the original plant, then it doesn't grow as well from the rhizome. If you come across a new Fire Dragon, please let us know as this is our white whale for 2023. ;-) Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
@TRguy64
@TRguy64 Жыл бұрын
@@jdgardensnj4563 Ohhh, that's too bad about losing your 'Fire Dragon!', but yeah, when growing hybrids from seed you'll get a bit of a range of colors and forms and not the exact original. Frustrating also that so many cannas come as misnamed and one must also watch out for virused plants as well, I've had to toss several diseased plants! Anyways, I have contacted a local nursery requesting they obtain 'Fire Dragon' from Proven Winners or Monrovia, I must have it! Just watching your other video now, dang I love the 'Tropicanna Black' and the 'Gold' and 'Alaska' really is something else!!

I just grew a canna, and it is more than 10 centimiteres tall, I still dont know what canna it is. But, the only observations I see from it is that it has magenta-maroon-ish color on the stems, the leaves are green with a small faint red outline on the leaves. The color from the stems fade in the leaves from maroon to green.

Hi @leearkintabunar . Sorry for the delay. Thank you for your comment. It's hard to determine without a picture but it sounds like it could be a Red King Humbert (aka Tropicanna Black aka Black Knight). Have your seed pods produced seeds or are they just small little pellets in them? Because Tropicana Black is a hybrid amd does not produce seeds. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Such clean, beautiful foliage. How do you keep the leaf rollers off? Or do you have leaf rollers in your area?
@jdgardensnj4563

Hi @freethinkish . Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for your compliment and question. Yes, we do get leaf rollers from time to time. What we do to keep them off is spray the cannas down with Neem oil and if we find any foliage that they already got to, we cut it away, especially before a video ;-). But remember, cannas are the French Poodles of plants - they love to be groomed so don't be scared of cutting away any bad areas of your leaves. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Hello Aksh. Thank you for your question. Cannas would be a great addition to your garden...we absolutely love them. Cannas can be left in the ground in Zones 8 or warmer. I believe the southern part of North Carolina might be in the Zone 8 range. You could also plant them in pots if you didn't want to dig up the rhizomes. Good luck and happy planting!

@@jdgardensnj4563 could you please explain the wintering process of cannas when they are planted in pots? 😅
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 жыл бұрын
@@jcfeb29 Hello Janis: The winter process for growing cannas in pots is no different from growing in the ground. What we were saying to Aksh, was that if he didn't want to grow them in the ground and instead grow them in posts, he could bring them indoors during the winter and continue to grow them where it's warm. But if you don't want to grow them inside, then you'll want to dig them out of the pots, after the frost comes and kills the stalk, so that the rhizome(s) can go dormant during the winter and be ready for the Spring. We have a whole section on our channel devoted to cannas. One particular video where we show you how to store them for the Winter. You can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppDJlJ2IoN51j5Y . I am in Michigan with a zone 6. People here have told me they never overwinter theirs. They just leave them in the ground, cover with mulch and they come back. I do this with my dahlias and they come back stronger every year! I have done the same with my gladiolas for ten years! They multiply like crazy! I wonder if my cannas would do the same if I leave them in the ground. I tried to overwinter my glads and they all died despite my best efforts.

Hi @HYTELES . Thanks for the comment. Yes, cannas can survive over the winter ... but you take a chance that they may not make it. That's why we always dig them up. But every now and then we miss some and come Spring, they pop back up again without any protection. But still, for us, we wouldn't want to take a chance on losing them. Hi Antonio. Thank you for the compliment - we do LOVE our cannas! :-) It's hard to say but the only thing that comes to mind is that it's been incredibly HOT & Dry this summer and when plants don't get enough water, they spend all of their energy trying to grow and less on fruiting/blossoming. We water our cannas religiously and this crazy heat is making it hard to keep up with. :-( Cannas love the full sun but they definitely need good water to keep them happy and healthy. I recently planted a canna bronze scarlet this month of April in the UK in zone 8 do these plants get quite tall and do they need heavy feeding? It's in the same bed as the musa basjoo, bamboo and hostas for a tropical vibe.. Love the video by the way covered so many varieties that I can see even here
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you so much for your kind words. The Bronze Scarlet can get 5+ feet tall. It doesn't need heavy feeding but cannas can grow ridiculously quick, not unlike bamboo. So the more water & sun you give them, the quicker and stronger they're gonna grow and the more seeds they'll produce for you and bigger & stronger rhizomes that you can save for the Winter. Glad there are canna lovers across the pond. 😉 Thanks for watching!

Hi Jessica. Thank you so much...we do love our cannas! Wait till you see this year's WalkThrough. It's going to be better than ever and it should be coming out in the next couple of weeks. As far as digging them up, it depends on what zone you live in. Here in NJ, we get cold winters and we don't like chancing it either, that they'll survive in the ground. So we like to dig them up and store them for the winter. If you feel that your area has too cold of winters, you can check out our Canna Lily series on our KZbin channel. We have videos showing how to dig them up and storing them for the winter so they'll be ready for you next Spring. It would be a shame to spend all that money on cannas to only have to re-buy them next year. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 жыл бұрын
They're all cannas. If you mean the big bushy ones inside the brown pots - those are our prize Hostas ;-). As for fertilizer, when we 1st plant our cannas, since they're not produce plants, we use Miracle Gro Shake n Feed. But then after that, we make our own compost and compost tea and add it to the beds. For produce plants, we use organic fertilizers - like Trifecta +. Thanks for watching!

Living in Florida come May all cannas get rust disease here. Wish the breeders could come up with a disease resistant variety. I'm not into spraying every two weeks with a fungicide.
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. That would be nice if they could come up with that. We don't get as much rust because our climate isn't as humid as Florida. But when it does come, it really is a nuisance. When we've had alot of rain and very hot weather, we have put out the large high velocity fans to help dry out the garden to help with any rust or mildew. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful Cannas! My wife just bought a few last summer, and I took them in and learn how to save the seeds. Should I start scarring the seeds at the end of March. I am in central New Jersey also, Yardville. Do you have a center that sells products?

Hi! I threw some canna seeds in to a container that gets water regularly and a year later during summer the canna plants started growing and had a first flower towards the end of the season. The same method worked for Strelitzia seeds... no scarring, just patience :) (I think where I live is a zone 10, lowest wintertemp is 30F) But maybe it would work for you to throw them in a plant container you have indoor? Ciao ciao!
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean. We actually start scarring our seeds at the end of February/early March by putting them in water for a few days, making sure to change the water, and then when the stems become visible, we plant them in pods and start growing them under grow lights until they're ready for the greenhouse and then when they're bigger and the weather gets warmer, then they get planted in their final spot ... outside. Thanks for watching! We have an Etsy shop where we sell canna seeds from our plants from the previous year. Check us out at Etsy: JDGardensNJ.

What do you do with the seeds you collect? I'm new to gardening so trying to learn witch I grow more of with seeds instead of digging up the rhizomes.
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 Жыл бұрын
Hi KevinMegamin. Thanks for the comment. It really depends because there are some cannas that produce seeds and there are hybrids, which don't produce seeds and you can only grow them from rhizomes: ones like the Tropicana series or a Pretoria. If you're new to cannas and you're not looking to dig up your rhizomes for the winter, we would suggest starting off with the Cannova series. They have a multitude of colors, produce tons of seeds and grow nicely! As far as seeds go, we obviously store them till the following season and then we sell them on our Etsy site. And if you're interested, here is our site: www.etsy.com/shop/JDGardensNJ I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us again. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Hi Cuộc Sống Tại Ả rập xê út: Thanks for the comment. Cannas will keep blooming all season long. Depending on where you live, you might have a limited grow time. Remember they are a tropical plant. Here in NJ, they'll grown from mid-May till the first frost, sometime in November. But if you live in a warmer climate, like Florida or California, etc, you can grow them year-round. Once a bloom is spent, they'll create seed pods. If you want, you can collect them or just cut them away and new blooms will start coming in. They really are a low maintenance plant and will keep budding for you all season long. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Hello thegifylady1. One of the problems that we find that could cause lack of blooming is the weather. It's been an extremely hot and dry summer on the east coast and we're noticing alot less flowering because of it. You might want to try giving your plants some more water regularly so they have the energy to produce the blooms that you're looking for. I hope this helps you out. Thanks for watching!
