Very impressive, gives me hope. I put together a system a few years ago and it never was as strong as I would have liked. When I moved I met a neighbor who said that he knew all about solar systems and would be glad to reset my solar system up. He ended up jacking up my system so bad that it doesn't work anymore at all. I have lived without any power completely off grid for 2 years.

This is fascinating. Makes me feel a bit better about "recycling" EV batteries, too - since it seems that EVs are the route to "saving the planet" that we've chosen and we'll soon be up to our ears in old ones, I think. I'd love to see a lot more about Joe's entire setup - the house, the attached greenhouse, etc. Very cool. This is the green transition we need. I will subscribe (as soon as the link is up 🙂).

4kW hours from 100lbs of batteries is quite impressive. For folks looking for cheap, used Lithium Ion and LiFePO batteries, check repair shops that work on boats, golf carts or mobile medical equipment. You may snag a good deal on these batteries.

LiFePO tend to be more in high end products like medical equipment, but as it becomes cheaper tech with time, you may get lucky with the other places listed. I'm sure there's more industries than what I mentioned so dig around. Good luck 😁

@judyofthewoods as for fire danger, you can minimize it by keeping the area cool and creating fire walls with cinder blocks between each battery in the system. Sure, your leads may be a tad longer, but worth the safety imo. Not an expert here, just a backyard tinkerer lol

I’d love more videos like this! My house isn’t a great candidate for on roof solar, given the orientation and tree cover, but I’d love to build a system like this to make use of the sunny spots I’m not going to grow crops on.

Two things to note: 1) You may be able to join a small solar farm in your area. The panels are somewhere open, you get credit for the energy produced (it pays down your electric bill). 2) Many crops (evidently tomatoes a one example) grow BETTER under a canopy of solar panels.

If you need more power for the tools and appliances that peak and use almost a full 15A house circuit, you need a 1800W+ inverter. That would handle your chop saw ez.

There are simple 'solar generator' systems you can buy, but make sure you verify that the batteries are LiFEPO4 if you are going to get one. This may be more DIY than you need...

The problem with the compound mind. Your side is that they don't make them with a slow energy. Drive up system which you can buy and add it to your compound. Saw and use it as much as you want. They make the same systems for air conditioning units and everything else

The main reason why Japan chose CHAdeMO as a bi-directional charging standard is to use BEVs in case of power outages. The car itself is meant to be a gigantic mobile battery. Never did we imagine that there are smart and creative people out there who have figured out how to re-purpose old LEAF batteries as home storage.

Thats good to know! Kill-a-watt is the generic one out there, but if you search for that or watt meter AC you may be able to find other ones. We have a cheap one or two that seem to work just fine

eh growatt or eg4 3k and call it done (victron is amazing and all, but totally overkill for this size system). leaf cells are ok, but not as safe as lifepo4 chem (these days new lifepo4 48v batteries have come way down in price and compete with repurposed EV cells as those are in high demand for EV conversions, though depending on the $/kwh on these leaf cells, who knows. fwiw that ebay seller seems to be away and has removed all listings). even an ecoflow delta 2 would be better on performance and cost albeit for a smaller capacity ($799 for 1kwh and 1800w, which is totally fine for a chest freezer depending on available solar obv), though the smaller ones tend to have much lower input voltage limits so depending on the solar panel array(s) ymmv

I agree that a 48v Lifepo system is the way to go. Although they probably saved a lot of money with the batteries in this setup, the Victron Components are top of the line and pretty expensive. I have a 240v EG4 setup for my off grid home - 6.8KW solar and 30KWH batteries. But for smaller 12v applications like this I use harbor freight 1500w inverters and Unbranded cheap charge controllers. I’ve used a few different variations of setups like this, for my off-grid camper as well as an off-grid farm. One 12v setup is running a chest freezer now, $150 inverter, $40 charge controllers. 600w of solar panels and $900 SOK 2.5KWH battery. -Shawn, let me know if you ever want to check out my homestead, 30min away from you. I think they are a great battery, and quite robust, I feel like I got a little nervous when the inverter was able to run them to a much lower voltage than I would've liked to have seen. I went for a battery with a stronger BMS system, I need to have the set up in a situation that is not indoors and then I can feel more comfortable with working with them.

@@homestead.design yeah I would love to see a side by side using a gas generator vs solar for the investment, is there documentation on how much oil and resources used to create these batteries and the impact they have on the environment vs the impact of the generator. Also the time span of the components vs a used generator. I love the solar I can’t wait to get a setup like this. I use led lightbulbs and the amount of money saved pays back the investment towards the end of the life of the led it’s a nice thing but the thing that throws a wrench in it if a bulb dies off before the life cycle and when you go to the factory warranty they discontinue that bulb and your SOL. That’s if you can find the receipt but even then the receipt will loose it’s ink after so long…

Well, used car batteries are not so available everywhere... But i would go for LiFePO4 in the house, for safety. And honestly, a 1 kW Inverter driving a 1kW load is not impressing. The Victron stuff i use does its job, and i am basically very happy with it. There are some things though, that seem not really finished, like the fans in the multiplus II, ore software... I am now waiting almost three weeks to get an answer from the Victron support, why my smart chargers, multiplusses and cerbo are measuring around 1 Volt more than the smart shunts or my several meters. It is annoying to get automatically asked to rate their support once per week, whilst nothing else happened... It is also somehow hilarious to have power outages from time to time, to switch off the ups because it got stuck at 53 Hz and doesn't let the other inverters do their job... And if three solar panels really is a good amount for everyone? I would not give a general recommendation therefore. It really depends on what is done with it. Everyone should build his system according to his needs. Nothing wrong using Victron stuff. Cheaper is possible, better is very pricy. I would not go cheaper for things you need on a daily basis. On my tractor i have one solar panel on the roof and a cheap inverter. Has powered everything i tested so far, and is nothing i rely on. Thanks for sharing.

We live on Maui and most of our trips are 20 miles or less per day. We have a carport at our condo and are not allowed to plug into our house to charge an EV. We need a system like this installed on our carport only maybe two or three times the size to charge our EV. I kWh gives us about 4 miles of range. I imagine the system would cycle on and off through the day as the battery is charged by the panels and then drawn down by charging the plugged in EV. We currently have a plug-in hybrid Prius but have not been able to charge it since moving here. Our HOA is open for suggestions. Has anybody done this yet?

Car camping idea is fantastic as you could literally air condition the back of a cutaway(panels on top/all sides) or something military grade from auction, while roaming new lands making new discoveries for different fields of knowledge; the World is huge. Wondering how to build a yacht capable of moving one of these also, the man's a genius and it's inspiring.
