Eyup everyone, this video has been a bit divisive and that really wasn't my intention. The plan was to turn up last minute, with no research and just have a look around. I was absolutely knackered so maybe came across a bit grumpy but Edinburgh is a beautiful city and I'd like to come back with Helen and make a more upbeat vlog. If any locals would like to come and give us a tour, that would be great. My email address is in the description. 😊

It's very hard to be spontaneous AND budget conscious when you rock up to a city you're not familiar with, especially when you're also knackered from travelling but did a brilliant job with this odyssey James! There's no need to pay £00s for hotel rooms in Edinburgh or Glasgow but finding cheap ones near the city centres does take a bit of looking, like with any big city....and it's probably never going to be cheap if you arrive on the night you want to stay. Glasgow has a few affordable pod-type hotels including Revolver and Citizen M.....Maldrons hotel is also nice and can be cheap depending when you book....my personal favourite is Grasshoppers hotel right next to the central station (not sure if they still do it, but they used to have free homemade cupcakes available for guests 24/7!!)

Thanks for taking us on a great trip! I reckon if you'd had a bit of sleep on the train, you'd have been ok, but you looked dazed and shattered when you came out the station. A snooze in the park might have helped (I've seen it done discreetly!) Still, nothing ventured nothing gained. I'm sure the next wandering adventure will benefit from the do's and don'ts learned from this one. Rooms are just going to get more n more expensive as summer comes along, aren't they. If you scroll the calender on the YHA website you can find dates and (cheaper) prices for private rooms for odd nights here n there... Great stuff!

I really felt for you in this video, trying to handle Edinburgh's notorious hills and cobbles on next to no sleep - I think all those people who voted for you to go from Lincoln to London then from there to Edinburgh must be some kind of sadists !!! ... It was an interesting idea, but as you found out not terribly prectical and VERY expensive, but you must go back one day, properly prepared. I've been twice, both in Spring midweek but aven't had much luck either there. The first time G/F No:1 sprained her ankle on the first day walking from our BnB into the centre and I found out my uncle had died while we were in the castle (a rip off BTW - you did well to swerve that) and the second time G/F No:2 twisted her knee as far away from the car as you could get on our walk and it was VERY cold and rainy the whole time, at least you had decent looking weather ! I hope to go back on my own by train (when I've saved up!) and walk or bus it towards Leith, checking out Hibernian FC, the new Meadowbank Stadium and best of all walk up "Arthur's Seat" which Helen was trying to tell you to do, the views from there of the city are awesome as often seen on Scootish set drama shows on TV like "Guilt" & "Annika" ... Hope you have recovered now, keep on doing what you do, we all love it !

Great vlog though. 😊

Ha, I thought it was just me who thought this way. Agree with all your comments and I believe it was quite airless. Don’t remember any contact with staff (I boarded late in the day). Can’t remember whether I was going for an interview or had a long haul flight to catch, was absolutely shattered. If I had been able to sleep lengthways instead of side ways on, may have been a bit better, felt as if I was going to be tipped out at every stop 😂, and there was plenty of those. This was many years ago, never repeated the ‘experience’.

Bertie's is a massive trap for tourists who want to try fish and chips but don't know where else to go. All your Americans and other tourists are on Victoria Street for their Instagram photos, they see the big red white and blue neon sign and they're sold. They won't bat an eyelid at paying £30 for a mediocre fish supper and some tinned mushy peas because they don't know any better. There are numerous chippies around the city who will do a much better fish supper with a can of Irn Bru - which is how it should be done - for around a tenner.

Edinburgh is my favourite city. You need a few days there to explore and some stamina for all the hills and closes. You can take the tram down to Leith and get nicer fish and chips overlooking the sea. The seating is for the Edinburgh Tattoo which they have every year at the same time as the festival. Also if you go up Calton Hill its not too high but you get great views of the city and castle, out to the sea and Arthurs seat. I stayed in a B&B quite close to Calton Hill so walking distance to the centre and very reasonable.

But all I kept thinking while watching it was hasn't he checked anything out before hand. Could have booked an underground tour of the vaults or Mary King's Close. Went to the National Museum Of Scotland for free could spend a few hours in that place. Should have took a walk up Calton Hill for great views over the city. Could have stayed in Falkirk for a night found a cheaper hotel there. Falkirk is easily accessible by frequent trains there. In Falkirk your smack bang in the middle between Glasgow and Edinburgh. And the bonus is you stay in Falkirk you've got an opportunity to see the Kelpies. But that's the sort of info you go armed with if you do some homework first.

Good on ya James. I really enjoyed your last few days. And you know what I think I'd have just got the train hone too. 👍 There's nowt worse than getting no sleep and feeling grouchy. And there's no way I'd be paying hundreds to stay in a hotel for one night. You give it a good go. 👍😁 Now get ya self back down to Barnsley. Safe travels. 🚄😁🤪

Oh my James, you took me right back to times spent with my relatives from Barnsley when you said you would be really "badly", that is what they used to say. Sweets were spice, coat was coit, love it. Well done on your trip, you really covered some miles. Looking forward to the next vlog

I was thinking this needs Helen to liven it up. The Hotel prices are far to expensive though. Take care.
