Spencer Tracy is brilliant, in this film surprising that here, his still quite young, but was an old man, by the end of the 40's.

Saw this many many years ago and this scene always stuck with me the only other thing I think is from this movie if memory isn't failing me is a scene where Thomas talks via more code with a lady on another floor of his factory or something like that? Now I've finally found this I have one more mission to find another old movie about the inventor of the spitfire, all I remember is everyone is against the idea of a single winged plane untill he wins some kind of race.

Your memory is correct! He was tapping and scraping out a message on a metal pipe that ran between floors using some type of metal hand tool. I've always had a fascination with gas lighting and enjoy watching movies set mainly in the later 1800s in cities like New York.
