Edit Photos MORE ACCURATELY in GIMP | Image Precision Explained (8-bit / 16-bit / 32-bit)

In this GIMP tutorial, I define and explain Image Precision, including the difference between 8-bit integer, 16-bit Integer, 32-bit Integer, 16-bit Floating Point, and 32-bit Floating Point image precision modes. I also get into Perceptual Gamma (sRGB) and Linear Light channel encoding modes. All of these options can be found under the Image Precision menu and allow you to more accurately edit your photos. By choosing the right image precision options, you'll edit with a higher dynamic range, more precise colors, and with the best settings recommended by the GIMP team for the best final photos.
This is a very technical tutorial, but I attempted to break everything down in a way everyone (including myself) can understand.

If all you have is an 8 bit camera is there any way to convert an 8 bit image to a 16 bit by filling in the missing data? Come up with the missing values based on the provided vales they would fall in between?

Excellent tutorial Mr Davies, very well explained. One request I have for a possible future video, if you have not done one already. Is how to change skin color eg To make a white person look like a black person or vice versa. Can come in handy if you face swap, but your subjects are of different race / skin color. Can have other useful applications as well.Thanks

I didn't watch this video yet, but I tried to edit 16bit images in Gimp these days and it was terribly slow. I used Gimp on Linux and the hardware specs are i7 7700k overclocked to 4.9GHz, 32GB DDR4 overclocked to 2800MHz, nVidia GTX 1060 6GB, nvidia and CUDA drivers. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit/Preferences/System Resources -> Hardware Acceleration -> uncheck the _Use OpenCL_ -> then OK then restart GIMP I use GIMP on Linux as well, it's lightning speed and my computer's specifications are way lower than yours : OS: Ubuntu 19.10 x86_64 Kernel: 5.3.0-46-generic DE: MATE CPU: Intel i5-7400 (4) @ 3.500GHz GPU: Intel HD Graphics 630 Memory: 7851MiB
