I was hesitant about editing backwards, worrying I would miss better takes. But after trying it on several cuts, it's clearly the fastest way to edit scripted videos. My tip for editing faster would be to remap often-used keyboard shortcuts (e.g., ripple delete, ripple trim, move forward/back 1 frame, move to next/previous clip) to the left side of the keyboard. This lets you keep your right hand on the mouse and use keyboard shortcuts with just your left hand via command/ctrl, option/alt, and letter keys on the left side of the keyboard. Thanks a lot for your tips!

A tip. Just before colour grading, you need to do some adjustments on each and every clip. This can be exposure, colour temperatures, sharpness, contrast, while keeping in mind that you will be adding colour grading over all those clips right after this step.

Hi, I love your videos. I've got the following question which is better for a-cut assembly - using in out and then inserting (looks like the standard method). Final Cut Pro X editors use this method - or putting everything on the timeline and trimming ( gives more precision and eliminates the need to insert into the timeline every single time). Editors like Taran from Linus Tech Tips use this

An excellent video packed with lots of useful tips. It's the reason why many of the world's best film directors started their career as editors. When I do my cuts I like overlapping them so that you don't get a sharp cut but a nice faded transition from one video clip to the next one. I now also understand why old movies use a clapper board - it creates a great visual and leaves a nice spike in the audio timeline for syncing. I do like the tip of editing backwards but I wonder how much time is potentially wasted as one reviews the clip in the correct chronological order? You have a new subscriber - keep up the excellent work.

Some great tips, what makes me feel sad though is that to get this kind of quality in my videos I’m going to HAVE to restrict myself to max one video a week and I do this as a hobby, not as a full time job otherwise I wouldn’t haven’t an issue. But if I try to be more regular, I just won’t have people the time to take such care in my edits. I usually just did one take for the whole video, but then the length of the video would vary dramatically and trying to decide how to cut it down proved long and arduous. So I guess I should try to incorporate some transitions of jump cuts, but I’m worried as some people really don’t like them.
Great tips, Justin! Anyone know if the top, trim, & tail exists for Sony Vegas, and if so, what it is? Thanks!
