Honestly, I feel like he always felt a sense of competition with his sons, because eventually one of them would certainly succeed him, and kill the others. Like with Mustafa, he always had his guard up around him even when Mustafa was a kid. But with Mihrimah, he could love her and be absolutely sure that she will never betray him and that she would always support him. Same with Chihangir. He had disability, got crossed out of the succession line, and Suleyman loved him dearly. He seemed to have really valued intellect and obedience from his children, as Mehmet, Mihrimah, Chihangir all reported to have had great minds and character.

He loved mehmat too.. and wanted him to be next king.. he even wrote poem about him in history (reality not this show). U know why? Because mehmat was very loving and obedient and always put himself next to the sultan.. but with mustafa , he always indirectly threatenede sultan by showing support from army and ministers. He lost the trust of sultan.

This was because in the presence of mustafa, hurrem and his 5 kids had to take shelter at khadija sultan"s home when they were kid but mustafa was silent. There was a fear for hurrem and his kids. Every one knew that mustafa was not what he pretended. Infact he was happy ovet the fights between saleem and biyazat.

Did they really expected the princess of the world’s conqueror to be just a mere naive girl? Suleiman already had many sons and all in line to inherit the throne, of course he’ll dote on his daughter who wouldn’t betray him and love him for who he is. Let’s not forget Mihirmah is the only one who can stand up for her mother without looking like a rebel/threat to her father.
